The “Willie McCovey Award” is an annual honor bestowed upon the most inspiration- al player on the San Francisco Giants, as voted upon by the players, coaches, training staff and fans. The award was established in 1980, in honor of former legend and Hall-of-Famer Willie Monday - September 21 McCovey.     Executive Report to the Board of Trustees • February 24, 2010 CSM ALUM &GIANTS ANNOUNCER JON MILLER RECEIVES HALL OF FAME HONOR; VISITS CSM Major League Baseball Announcer and CSM Alum Jon Miller, who started his broadcasting career by announcing CSM baseball, football and basketball games, is headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Also known as the “Voice of the Giants,” Miller is the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually to recognize excellence in baseball broadcasting. In addition to calling the play‐by‐play for the San Francisco Giants since 1997, Miller has also announced games for the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and the Oakland A’s, and has been a regular on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecasts for 20 years. He will be inducted at the historic Cooperstown museum during the Baseball Hall of Fame’s induction ceremonies in July. John Miller & CSM broadcasting students As a broadcast veteran of 30 years Miller has received numerous awards, including the National Sportscaster of the Year from the National Sportscasters Association in 1998 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association of America. As described by the San Francisco Giants website, he is “noted for his eloquent game description, golden voice and marvelous sense of humor.” When Miller broadcasts games that include former CSM baseball players he often mentions CSM, the athletic program and his connection to the college.
