(A) Un-American Activities. (2) The Committee on Un-American Activities, as a whole or by subcommit- tee, is authorized to make from time to time investigations of (i) the extent, character, and objects of un-American propaganda activities in the United States, (ii) the diffusion within the United States of subversive and un-American propa- ganda that is instigated from foreign countries or of a domestic origin and attacks the principle of the form of government as guaranteed by our Constitu- tion, and (iii) all other questions in relation thereto that would aid Congress in any necessary remedial legislation. The Committee on Un-American Activities shall report to the House (or to the Clerk of the House if the House is not in session) the results of any such investi- gation, together with such recommendations as it deems advisable. For the purpose of any such investigation, the Committee on Un-American Activities, or any subcommittee thereof, is authorized to sit and act at such times and places within the United States, whether or not the House is sitting, has recessed, or has adjourned, to hold such hearings, to require the attendance of such witnesses and the production of such books, papers, and documents, and to take such testimony, as it deems necessary. Y. PUBLIC HEARING A subcommittee of the Committee on Un-American Activities met at 10 : 20 a. m., pursuant to recess, in room 1703 of the Federal Build- ing, Foley Square, New York, N, Y., Hon. I became a citizen in Waco, Tex., February 1943, while I was in the United States Army. 2373 2374 COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES IN THE NEW YORK AREA Mr. Tavenner. For what period of time did you serve in the Armed Forces of the United States ? Mr. Hall. From 1942 to 1946, 3 years and 3 months and 14 days. Mr, Tavenner. What is your occupation ? Mr. Hall. I am an actor. Mr. Tavenner. Do you reside in the city of New York ? Mr. Hall. Yes, sir. Mr. Tavenner. Where have you engaged in your occupation or profession ? Has it been exclusively in the city of New York ? Mr. Hall. No, sir. I have been practically all over the country in the pursuit of my profession. Mr. Tavenner. But New York has been your headquarters? is yes, sir. Mr. Hall. That right ; Mr. TA^^-]NNER. How long have you been engaged in the acting profession professionally ? Mr. Hall. Professionall}^ in New York since 1946, but sort of semi- professionally and amateurishly, I guess you might say all of my life, all of my adult life. Mr. Tavenner. Will you tell the committee, please, what your stage credits have been ? Mr. Hall. Call Me Mister, High Button Shoes, Insect Comedy, Londoner, Touch and Go, Live Wire, An Anonymous Lover, Jones Beach Spectacle, and Stockade ; and a great many things in stock and what have you. In New York specifically, I was in Call Me Mister, Londoner, Touch and Go, The Insect Comedy, and The Live Wire, and the off-Broadway production of Stockade. Mr. Tavenner. Have you also been active in the field of television? Mr. Hall. Yes, sir. Mr. Tavenner. Do you have any special television credits ? Mr. Hall. Well, I have been on the Ed Sullivan Show twice, on Celebrity Time, many many times. And the last TV show I did was the Man Behind the Badge, CBS production, and there have been quite a few TV shows, and it is difficult to remember them all. Mr. Tavenner. Have you also been engaged in the field of radio ? Mr. Hall. Yes. Mr. Tavenner. What radio programs have you engaged in ? Mr. Hall. My radio activity has been mostly on the soap opera called. Pepper Young's Family, which I have done on and off for quite a number of years. Mr. Tavenner. Wliat was the first stage production that you took part in ? Mr. Hall. Call Me Mister. Mr. Tavenner. Wlien was that ? Mr. Hall. The first New York professional production, in 1946.

On the one hand, their projections of annual returns on private accounts are often in the region of eight or nine percent – historically average returns.     Famous Long Ago Michael Uhl 17 Scene Art and Politics SoHo The holidays I’m guessing were spent in the usual manner: home to family for Christmas, Tod and Eddie to Michigan, me to Long Island or the Bronx; the New Year – 1975 – rung in with our crowd at some Leftie party or neighborhood tavern, with maybe a pre-midnight ramble through Times Square to gape at the rubes. There are no details to offer, but I do know what was most on my own mind, and I wasn’t looking to slacken the pace. I’d already spent most of December commuting among artists I’d been referred to by Cleve Gray, running around the city collecting the prints or paintings they’d donated, to include an iconic target print by Jasper Johns retrieved from the old bank on Houston Street the painter had converted into a live-in studio. There were over forty pieces in all.1 I can pick up my own tracks in mid-January, a Friday morning and the day before our Art Benefit, when I walked the dozen blocks from my apartment down to So Ho to meet Lucy Lippard, an art critic on the rise who had volunteered to help hang the show. Tod’s old flame, Marjorie, lent us her loft and secured as well the adjacent Onnasch Gallery for which we paid a minimal fee. Lippard could spare only a few hours, so we galloped around the space, Lucy directing, the Calder here, Johns over there, me securing the work while she drove the nail, and on through a large inventory including works by Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Saul Steinberg, Judith Krassner, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Alex Katz, Frank Stella, to cite the biggest catches, as well as the odd piece from artists associated with the Left, like Leon Golub, then relatively obscure.

At American Jewish World Service (AJWS), that hero is Ruth. She is a visionary leader whose energy, passion and commitment to justice know no bounds. For 18 years, she has been at the helm of AJWS, furthering the pursuit of global justice, honoring the inherent dignity of all people and leading American Jews to repair the world. Prior to joining AJWS, she was a luminary of New York City government, leading her school board, serving on the City Council and eventually serving as the Borough President of Manhattan—always with an unshakable conviction that all of New York City’s diverse citizens must be heard and respected. At every stage of her career, Ruth has confronted injustice fearlessly and ferociously— and instilled hope in all she encountered with a smile, an open hand and a compassionate heart.     NEW YORK STORY: JEROME ROBBINS AND HIS WORLD Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Exhibition Curated by Lynn Garafola March 25 – June 28, 2008 The labels, wall exits, and reflections that follow are an effort to revisit an exhibition that did not, alas, have a published catalogue or a robust website. Exhibitions are like performances. When they close, they are dismantled, and the objects, their magic gone, sent back to their boxes. In revisiting this material, I wanted to evoke the experience of walking through the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, with the reader enjoying by suggestion and as an act of imagination the numerous objects on display tracing the remarkable career of Jerome Robbins as an artist of the ballet, Broadway, and concert stage in mid-twentieth-century New York. This is the second of three exhibitions I have curated about ballet in New York City from the 1930s to the late twentieth century. As such it complements Dance for a City: Fifty Years of the New York City Ballet (New-York Historical Society, 1999) and Arthur Mitchell: Harlem’s Ballet Trailblazer (Wallach Art Gallery, 2018).
