Mr Mark Meaney (L) and Mr Chan Chee Keong (R) On 28 January 2016, Mr Mark Meaney, General Manager of Conrad Centennial Singapore, presented a cheque for $10,613.70 to Mr Chan Chee Keong, APSN President. This marked the completion of their “Adopt a Conrad Bear” fundraising campaign which took place from 30 November 2015 to 11 January 2016.

In total over 440 pieces of Conrad signature plush bears, in 4 varying sizes, were made available for adoption by the public and all proceeds went to APSN. This event was all the more poignant as it was the last year that the iconic Conrad Bear Christmas Tree would make its public appearance at the hotel lobby. Subsequently all unsold bears were donated to APSN.

This is not the first time that APSN has collaborated with Conrad Centennial. In 2014, Conrad Centennial invited a group of students from Tanglin School to tour the hotel facilities to learn more of the hospitality industry. In the following year, the hotel sponsored some funds and furniture in the refurbishment of the mock hotel suite in Tanglin School.

16 Experiencing Biological Diversity

On 4 March 2016, a Science Camp was organized for all Secondary One students. The objective of the camp was to expose students to two types of living things – animals and plants, and to identify their characteristics to survive. Themed Transforming Lives and Inspiring Change, the organising committee engaged volunteers from Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD) to present a talk to students about how to show love and respect to domestic animals around us. They also brought down 3 of their trained dogs, which they have rescued from the streets, for students to interact and play with. Students were inspired by what Exploring the Flower Dome the volunteers did and learnt that the dogs have become the ambassadors of the SOSD outreach programme after they have been rehabilitated and rehomed. The next part of the programme was all about plants. At Gardens by the Bay, students marvelled at the landscape features, the flora and fauna as well as the botanical wonder of the Cooled Conservatories, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. They learnt about the diversity of plants and experienced the magical transformation of environmental conservation. Walking across the OCBC Skyway was an exciting activity and the first for many of the students. With the encouragement from their teachers, students overcame their fear for heights and confidently enjoyed the 128-metre-long aerial walkway. The day ended with the spectacular Supertrees “Garden Learning from a SOSD volunteer Rhapsody” of lights and sounds that illuminated and filled the night sky. The students had a wonderful time with their teachers and peers and were looking forward to more of such experiences.

23 Katong School celebrated Total Defence Day on 15 February 2016. Both primary and secondary students were treated to a wonderful display of rifle drills, performed by the students from neighboring Bedok View Secondary School (BVSS). With this year’s theme in mind - “Together, we keep Singapore strong”, students learnt and discussed about the importance of Total Defence in Singapore, through the presentation of PowerPoint slides & relevant videos by their teachers in the classrooms. The students were also given the chance to reflect and pen down their thoughts on how they could play a part in keeping Singapore strong. Following the celebration and discussions, the students became more aware of the significant role that Total Defence play, in maintaining the safety and security of Singapore, by being the cornerstone of Singapore’s deterrent strategy. Students were excited to see and feel the rifles up close Katong School’s Total Defence Day Celebration

24 Empowering teachers in teaching and learning pedagogy

Teachers in action for the role play segment

Drama in education is a unique tool being utilised in classroom teaching whereby it engages the pupils most fully --intellectually, emotionally, physically, verbally and socially.

Performing arts is a niche area in Chaoyang School. Hence, as a means to empower our teachers to be equipped with the necessary skills, the expertise of a trainer from Singapore Repertoire Theatre (SRT) is being sought.

The workshop was designed such that teachers teaching the lower primary focus on STELLAR approach compared to the upper primary thematic domain. Skills such as replicating sequence of events through verbal and nonverbal communication were explored. Additionally, drama games were also introduced. The teachers had a lot of takeaways from the workshop and felt more confident to impart skills learnt. As aptly quoted “By learning you will teach. By teaching you will learn.”

Appointment of student leaders @ CYS This year marks the 5th year of our leadership programme since 2012. Official appointment was A proud moment for the prefects made during the Whole-School CCE assembly by our principal, Mdm Yazilah. A total of 66 pupils were appointed on the day officially in three stages. Namely Prefect (Stage 3), Junior Prefect (Stage 2) and Junior Leader (Stage 1). With different training programmes and focuses for various stages planned for them throughout the year, we aim to develop leadership qualities in our pupil leaders so as to achieve our new Chaoyang vision ‘To lead, to shine and to contribute’. Thus, to not only lead oneself, but also to the others as a pupil leader. 27 Harnessing Quality Partnerships - Visitors

Visitors from University of Canberra and RMIT

Chaoyang School believes in learning good practices from others as well as sharing our own practices with them.

The school has had the privilege of hosting 3 different groups in Term 1 of 2016.

The first group were a group of Australian university students from the University of Canberra & RMIT. These students wanted to know and also interact with our pupils. It was indeed a good opportunity for them to do so during our Wednesday CCA session and they didn’t waste any time in mingling with our pupils and making themselves at home in the different CCAs such as Choir, Soccer, Athletics, Hip Hop etc.

The second group that visited us were a group of teachers from as part of their CSR/ CIP. This group was interested in getting to know the school and its programme so that they can plan future programme for their staff and students with Chaoyang.

The third and final group were participants from the Management and Leadership in Schools ( NIE). For the 4th year, CYS has hosted this group so that our counterparts; particularly the Heads of Departments and programmes from mainstream schools will be more aware of how a special school operates and the diverse programmes that are offered to cater to the unique needs of pupils with mild intellectual disability.

Essentially, teachers shared key aspects of curriculum content, pedagogical approaches and assessment formats with the parents. Where possible, teachers also provided practical information to parents so that they may extend what is taught in school to the home Parents browsing at the resources put up on display environment.

SG 50 The Singapore Future Exhibition: “The Future of Us” Brief history of Singapore for the pupils

Chaoyang School staff and pupils had the opportunity to visit ‘The Future of Us Exhibition’ at Gardens by the Bay. It capped the country’s SG50 celebrations and showcased the core values that resonate through the generations.

This exhibition was an immersive and multi-sensory experience for all ages Shaping dreams for Singapore’s future that offered a glimpse into the possibilities of how Singaporeans can live, work, play, care and learn in the future. Additionally, Singaporeans are encouraged to share their hopes and dreams for themselves, their families and the nation.

It was also heartening to know that the vision of what life in Singapore might be like in the future emphasises on being an inclusive society as highlighted through some of their exhibits. Pupils waiting in anticipation for the next exhibit 29 “Signposts” Signposts workshop session in progress Workshop conducted by CYS psychologist, Mr. Andy Lum for Parents

All families have to contend with difficult behaviours from time to time, but it can be a very testing experience for parents and the challenges can be even more daunting if the child has an intellectual disability as well.

Hence the workshop aims to help parents work out the reasons for their child’s behaviour, develop effective ways of managing that behaviour, and prevent more difficult behaviour developing in the future. The workshop is run by the school psychologist across 5 sessions.

Moreover each parent was given a set of Signposts materials which are practical, straightforward and clearly relevant to what families need to know.
