/tbiIit $^OC< * AftfA VoM.C .NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1984 MARCH VOL. 15 No. 4 VICTORIAN MARATHON CLUB & ROAD RUNNERS 38th ANNUAL REPORT 1983 - 1984* The year under review has shown more progress than for some years, due mainly to better attention to some evident weaknessese The establishment of an office, although not at full working capacity, and a conscious approach to the problem of lagging renewals of memberships by many of our keen runners brought about a rise in membership as well as greater participation in our runs. With still 3 scheduled runs to go at the time of writing, we are 92 up on the previous season's figures and should top the 3000 mark by our Annual Meeting. Financial membership at the end of 1983 closed with 487 Senior Men, 47 Senior Women, 18 Junior Men and 6 Junior Women, a total of 558® The change to making our membership year valid for the Calendar Year (January to DecmeberJ had brought about an excellent response - by mid-February our membership figures were in excess of two thirds of the previous year's total, six weeks into the new year. Greater race particiaption combined with sound financial management is enabling our club to maintain the same level of fees for yet another period, a rare feat indeed these days. There has also been a greater awareness among our members (in spite of some perpetual shirkers on the athletic scene) to fulfill their roster requirements at least just that once a year which has in turn led to better management of our events <> Couple this with the excellent co-operation with other dubs and the Victorian Athletic Association, as well as involvement with major fun runs such as the Big M Melbourne Marathon, Toyota Olympic Fun Hun, etco, your club has made a considerable and growing contribution to the well being of distance running in Australia® However, unless we pay constant attention to all these matters concerning us and set about at running our own affairs on a basis of self-help and co-operation, progress soon staggers to a halt and few things will go according to our likingo To make our office a proper working centre, we need to aim at 1000 members» If you have enjoyed your participation in the VMC RR, have you kept it a secfet or have you told others I? If you enjoy reading your VMC Newsletter, sell a copy to a fellow runner. Better still, sell two II We have some excellent people on our membership lists, competent people in many varied walks of life, who each are capable of contributing towards the success of the club. Many of them have indicated ways in which they may be able to contribute and if, up to this stage, we have not followed up each one of than, please be patient as we have followed up some where it was most needed and will get around more in time. It simply is not possible to follow up everything at once, we need to consolidate one or two things at the one tijne or we finish making a hash of the lot. In the meantime, there is room on the Club Committee as well as participating on any of the various sub-committees (Sales, Publicity, Race Organisation, Newsletter Produc tion and Distribution, Seminars and Clinics, Office Duties, etc.,etc.) You have had a well working Committee this year and owe them a thank you for a job well doneo At the same time, we need to acknowledge the help and co-operation received from others in the athletic scene) men and women officials of the VAA, Russell Bourke from Ballarat, Mike O'Neill and others from the Veterans, 'Moose' O'Callaghan and many others. Thank you all and let's go forward together this Olympic Year 1984®

The Greensborough women’s group has a pack of at least 12 running each Monday night, at least the same on a Wednesday morning, 6-8 on a Thursday or Saturday morning. It!s amazing how the warm summer weather and light evenings bring out the latent chauvinism in young males. Monday nights wouldn’t be the same without the tooting of car horns and running the gauntlet of wolf whistles from the local appreciation gallery. I wonder if they’d whistle so vehemently if they realised that most of us are old enough to be their mothers! **************************************************************************** ************* The Club wish to acknowledge donations from Grant HARDY and Doug BOURNE. ***** ************************************** ********************************************** I wish to give the women members of the Club a real blast. If people like the marvellous Maureen Riley can enter the ’W* Zatopek and run a PB, admittedly close to an hour, but with no thought of dropping out, why can!t the rest of us (I include myself) have the same positive attitude and take the opportunity to run on what will be, later this year, the most modern track in Australia? I have the greatest admiration for Maureen’s courage and determination, and all of us should be proud to participate in events with her. The purpose of listing all these people is to bring to the attention of all VMC RR members - and others - how vital it is to the satisfactory conduct of all running events to have an adequate number of persons available. There are a lot of members who hare not nominated to take their t u n at officiating, mainly because they are not aware of the importance of doing so. They can. easily catch up by letting Conqsetition Director JANET O'DELL know anytime which particular day in the year they are prepared to do so and give someone else a break. VMC RR 101cm FON RUN. H\ The Americans are well known for their ability to sum up a situation with a single brief statement. When it comes to the New York City Marathon, what else could that statement be but a very wide-eyed ’WOW’. In every way it is a great race, or as many people say, more a ’happening1 than just a race. I had been very fortunate (lucky) in winning a trip with PAN AM to the States. The chap from PAN AM had told me I could go anywhere in the USA, and in fact it wasn’t even necessary for me to runl I managed to hold back my laughter as such a suggestion. PAN AM certainly looked after me - it is great to have someone such as them supporting our sport. I flew out to New York eleven days before the race and so had plenty of time to settle in and do all 'the ’touristy things1. This is a bit of a problem though, as the miles of walking about tends to leave the legs feeling pretty tired. New York was a very pleasant surprise to me, as I had gone there with the impression that I would probably be mugged as I disembarked from the plane, and that this type of thing would possibly continue throughout my atay, that is assuming I would survive day one. Like any large city, New York certainly has its undesirable areas, but I felt quite safe walking the streets and riding the subway late at night. With a population of 8 million (15 million in the greater New York area) you are never alone, so there!s that feeling of !safety in numbers1, but of course a bit of discretion (common sense) should be used. Each day I ran in Central Park, which is a haven for runners (plus cyclists and horse riders). During Summer the park is closed to traffic from 10.00am to 3.00pm and so it is a real oasis away from the rat-race of Manhattan. Many tracks criss-cross the area but the main outer road where all the races are held gives a very ..tough 10K with endless undulations. On running this circuit my respect for times run there by Grete Waitz, , Craig Virgin, etc., was greatly heightened. There is a continual procession of runners, many wearing headphones, others carrying hand weights, or any other 1 in1 gimmick. The average runner/jogger seemed to take their sport very seriously, and for an approaching runner to acknowledge your ’G’day’ (what does it mean anyway?) was very rare - such a break in concentration was surely unforgiveable. On the other hand, if you could get a conversation going, they would talk and talk, with the dialogue frequently interspersed with fwows! on hearing you were from Australia, etc. The Americas Cup has certainly made the Aussies big-time over there - in fact most people seemed very pleased that we had wone Registration for the race commences on the Wednesday before race day (Sunday), and from this time on runners roll in from all around the world, creating a tremendous atmosphere. From then on there was a continuous queue of people right around the hotel block waiting to collect their race number and ’goodie-bag’ at the Sheraton Centre. There was also a Runner’s Expo where all the big names in the runner’s gear industry showed off their wares, along with other international marathon organisations pushing the merits of their races. The day before the race is was possible to do extensive carbo-loading without spending a cent! In the morning there was the International Breakfast run from the United Nations through the traffic-free streets to the Tavern on the Green in Central Park (about 6K). This was a very inspiring, but leisurely jog under your respective country’s - in our case, by courtesy of Arthur Ellis, we had both the standard Aussie flag plus the kangaroo - great stuff! At the Tavern about 3,000 overseas runners were treated to a very filling breakfast in plush, even if overcrowded surroundings. Of course having taken part in this it was necessary to collect the obligatory T-shirt (should you decide to run New York, be sure to take an empty suitcase for all the T-shirts you will pick up along the way). For lunch the ’Runner* magazine was holding a carbo-loading/film session at the American Steak House - no steak just carbos and more carbos! Tea was then at a Manufacturers Hanover (race sponsor) building. This had to be held in one hour sessions to accommodate the 17,000 runners, and as everyone was seated at a table for the excellent food and drink it was very well organised. They even had an official area for T-shirt swapping! It was an early start to race day, as the official buses from the Lincoln Centre to the continued/- start on Staten Island began leaving from 5.00am, Jim Seymon and myself jogged from our hotel to catch the 6.30 bus. At this time it was pitch black, and the damp streets were only a hint of what was to come later. There were runners everywhere with many calling in at snack bars for final loadings of donuts and coffee. The only worry about the bus trip was the ling climb over the Verrazano-Narrows bridge (the race’s starting point) which was the first indication that the course wasn’t going to be easy. The next 3-j hours were spent lying in the huge marquees, making nervous last-minute trips to the porta-loos and listening to the stretching seesions that were being held outside. We were later listening to the rain whibh at times was reaching the cats-and- dogs stage. Finally it was time to go to the starting line - women and first timers on one side of the median strip, and experienced men on the other. Signs indicating anticipated times were clearly shown, but looking at some of the race numbers around me it seemed that this was being abused. Numbers had been allocated according to PBs, and my high 2-29 only got me number 5011! Seeded runners were given room to jog around ahead of the start line - this included former world heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson, who was hoping to break 3-40. I suppose he shouldn’t have been there, but who was going to argue with him! A ’totally awesome’ (an Americanism) sight was that of ten helicopters hovering low over the runners - it seemed that TV coverage would be ’in depth’ - the Yanks don’t do anything by halves. At 10-45 an almighty cannon blast sent the runners on their way. I lost only about ID- 15 seconds in crossing the line, and because the first mile was all uphill, things got sorted out very quickly with very little congestion. The rain was pounding down, but even so as we came off the bridge we were greeted by huge crowds of spectators ’rooting* for the runners despite the terrible spectating conditions. Most of the course was lined with 6creaming people whose calls varied as the race progressed through the different ethnic groups of the five boroughs of New York. I’ll always remember the Negroes yelling ’Australia, down-under - go, man, all right!’ This contrasted to the area in Brooklyn where the Hasidic Jewish people there seem to lead a very solemn existence, and so wouldn’t show such outward signs of encouragement - certainly not on a day when it was cold and pouring with rain- maybe they were the smart ones! I had gone to New York not fully fit, as abdominal surgery 10 weeks earlier had inter rupted my training (if Abebe Bikila could have his appendix removed 5 weeks before the Olympics, and then win in world-record time, why couldn’t I at least run a PB?) I soon found out why Bikila’s effort was considered so highly} Actually, thinking back on it, my problems started around mile one! You know the old story - sucked in by the atmosphere, all those helicopters, thousands of runners, two million spectators, etc. I ran quite well through to about 25K, but certainly above my fitness level. From there I started to slow gradually through to about 35K. From there it was just a matter of getting to the finish as best I could. I had found the previous part of the course fairly tough as there were many long slightly uphill sections. I suppost there were downhills also, but it’s always the ’ups’ you remember. The bridges made the going difficult with their fairly steep approach ramps, followed by the steel grating sections, which although covered with carpet, tended to hurt the feet - every thing jurts when you are having a bad day. A big problem was the unevenness of the streets, which with the heavy rain were filling with water, so concentration was needed every time you put your foot down. The last few K ’s were memorable for their pain. The entry to Central Park involves an uphill drag, which is then followed by numerous undulations. I’m not really sure which was worst - the uphills for the difficulty in getting up them, or the downs which were pounding my quads into a painful jelly. The crowds here were fantastic - to think that so many would brave the atrocious conditions was incredible. I eventually made it in 2-40-43 - well off my PB, but I hadn’t really expected much better. On crossing the line there was a long march (stagger) through the finishing chute before receiving the medal, space blanket and bottle of Perrier. From there it seemed an incredibly long walk to the clothes buses and supplies of chocolate bars, fruit, etc. continued/- Because of the rain and cold there was not much incentive to stay around (I’m sure the medical people would have handled many cases of hypothermia, so it was another walk back to the hotel to rest up for the disco that night. That turned out to be an enjoyable time, and showed that there was still plenty of energy left in previously weary bodies. I’m sure you’ve all read about Rod Dixon’s dramatic win over Geoff Smith in 2-08-59, only catching him at the 26 mile mark. Dixon’s win was the first by a foreign male in New York, and Smith’s time of 2-09-08 was the fastest debut marathon on record. Third was Ron Tabb in 2-10-46. The great Grete Waitz recorded her 5th win with an unchallenged run of 2-27-00 for 141st place overall. Second place went to Laura Fogli of Italy in 2-31-49 with Priscilla Welch of England third in 2-32-31. I found both New York City and the Marathon to be great experiences, ones I hope to be able to repeat. The atmosphere of the whole thing, to me, makes this the nearest thing to the Olympics an average or fun runner can experience. The rest of my time was spent in New Hampshire with Jim Seymon, and then Montreal, before flying home via Honolulu. This is reported to have the highest per capita running population of all American cities, and it is easy to believe with runners everywhere, any time of the day, despite the heat and humidity. It proved to be a good finish to a very enjoyable running holiday. ******************************************************************** ******************* ’IT SHOULDN’T HAPPEN TO A VET’ by Mike Hoare with acknowledgement to the Victorian Veterans’ News Magazine Tuesday the 14th was the day it happened, the day I will remember for the rest of my life, the day of my 45th birthday. Feeling quite chirpy at breakfast even though my wife didn’t wish me a happy birthday or come forth with a present for me. I just thought, well that’s women for you, the kids will have remembered. But they came to breakfast and not a word from any of them. As I recall, I went off to work feeling pretty miserable and stayed that way for most of the day. After work, I decided to go straight out to Croydon and have a run with my Vet. friends, friends who really understand and appreciate the meaning of a birth day. Sure enough, after the running for the night, during the usual tea and biscuits session, out came a birthday cake complete with candles. It was great to hear them all singing Happy Birthday and to know they meant it. My day was complete. Or so I thought. As we were breaking up for the evening, a most attractive divorcee whose name and age- group I will not disclose here, asked if I was going home for a family celebration. I replied no, and explained that I had been forgotten by those I held closest and dearest. She said that was too bad and why didn’t I come around to her place for a birthday drink. I thought deeply and logically about that offer for all of two seconds before replying, yes, and racing to my car. When we arrived, out came a bottle of champagne, two glasses - all very relaxing and eased all the aches and pains of the hard run. Shortly after she said she wanted to get out of her running gear and into something more comfortable. Sure, said I, didn’t mond at all. About five minutes later, she came back into the room carrying a big birthday cake, closely followed by my wife and children. They were all singing ’Happy Birthday’, while I stood there just wearing my white socks and black wristwatch. ************************************************************* **************************

PAGE 17 VMC NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1984 MARCH VOL 15 NO 4 NATIONAL RUNNING WEEK - THREDBO VILLAGE - JANUARY 198/4- by Colin Browne

The National Running Week was bigger and better than ever this year. It was more "national", with South Australia sending Alf Jenish, Peter Haynes and Danny O'Dea, and Victorians Ken Bunning and Dot Browne bringing about ten more starters than they did last year. The Canberra contingent, as usual, was the core, and we enjoyed the company of runners from Bathurst, Grenfell and Peak Hill in N.S.W. Christine Porter, with her bright smile, represented the Sydney Striders. The word had spread since last year, and Brian Lenton had nearly 200 people to cater for, which he did in his deceptively casual way. In fact, every event went off with plenty of fun, effective organisation, and no coercion whatsoever. Thredbo was cooler this year, it even rained all one day. The hills hadn't changed though. Even the pleasant little Fun Run around the village streets on the first Sunday has some killer hills in it. Peter Haynes and Danny O'Dea, two top greyhounds, cleaned up last year's place getters, Rob Prentice, Paul Rudkin and Geoff Moore, both breaking the course record of 29.25 in the process. Dot Browne knocked off Annette Perkins for the female section. Although Rosie Longstaff wasn't there this year, her record of 32.17 still is. Each morning started off with a hilly run of about an hour or so. Some times we went on the chair-lift to Crackenback and ran to the top of Kosciusko; other times we ran along the bitumen road uphill towards Dead Horse Gap, or downhill towards Jindabyne. Do you prefer to get the hard part over early, or put it off til last? You can do it either way. There are no flat runs. The scenery is exhilerating, with things to interest you at every level, distant or close-up. Plenty of wild-flowersf gushing streams, rocky outcrops, neat alpine lodges, pretty valleys, impressive mountain ranges. It is breathtaking for the runner in both s e n s e s . Each afternoon, Brian had organised some fun activity that the whole family could enjoy. on the Village Green was organised by the McGhie boys, Alistair and Feigusand Brian's son Michael. A soccer match with the kids brought out some long-forgotten skills from a few Poms, notably Tony Bradshaw and Paul Rudkin. Bill Raimond showed them a Dutch trick or two. Canoeing was a scream. Some oddly-paired combinations battled each other down Friday Flat Lake. Usually the battle was between the two in the same boat, with the result that the craft zig-zagged and curved in every direction but straight. Dave Cundy and Norma Ducker managed to turn a 150m. canoe race into a 5km. slalom course, hitting first one bank then the other. A novel form of wife-swapping was invented by the Rudkins and the McGhies. You take the other bloke's wife out in a canoe, capsize it and see what happens next. We woke on Thursday aware that it had rained all night, and was raining still. The babbling Thredbo River was a raging torrent, and down by Friday Flat, it was as wide as the lake itself. Into the newly-filled lake flowed water straight from the top of the mountain. It was frigid. The biathlon boys, Mike Hoare, Warwick Brain, Danny O'Dea, and Mai Nicholson, amongst others, nearly froze. They looked distinctly blue when they emerged. Danny and Mai were winners, as were Karen Banks, Jessica Raimond and Lucette King. Mixed seeded relays around the village delighted everybody. Kids, oldies, plodders and stars were all mixed in together and proved that running can be fun even in very unequal competition. Brian has the knack of encouraging all to try their hardest. His prize-giving does not favour the elite; in fact, it is often quite random. In the relays, the team who finished 13th won the prizes. Tennis, golf, barbecues, videos, discussions and swimming filled in more of the week. It was hilarious to come across at least a dozen hysterical adults standing bubbling in a hot-spa tub while all sorts of crazy jokes and comments were passed. They looked like a bunch of asparagus cooking in a p o t . ° A highlight of the week was a little revue put on by the mob from Croydon, Victoria. Parodies of old songs, to a running theme, and a few gags led up to a ritual in honour of the religion of running. It went over very w e l l . The two most challenging runs of the week were the 18 miler and the Kosciusko Classic, The first is a training run from Crackenback to the summit of Kosciusko, across the main ridge to Carruthers Peak, downhill to the snowy River, up steeply to Charlotte Pass, along the road and the j n® back t0 the chairlift. Always a solid run, this year it had the added spice of a mountain-top gale that had us leaning sideways at i+ 5° into it as we battled across the main ridge, an exposed goat-track that falls awav hundreds of feet on each side. The final event, the Classic, was again a hair-raising, ankle-busting adventure for the mad and the reckless. We saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" that f i Jones had nothing on us in the Classic. Once you turn and start bouncing down the mountain, you take your life in your hands, leaping rocks, dodging walkers, splashing through creeks, sloshing through mud, screaming down the iron-grid footpath. The most successful crazies this year were Rob Prentice (two in a r«w), John Harding and Geoff Moore, Sue Clarke, Linda Lenton and Karen Banks. There were plenty of lovely trophies for all age groups, presented by Ludwig Rabma at the Bistro that afternoon. The Happy Hour extended to three or four and wound up a week that will be long remembered by those who were t h e r e .

NEWS FROM THE TOP END Dear Fred, As promised at the VMC New Year’s Eve run, I have enclosed a Darwin running programme for 1984. In addition to these events we hold cross-country every Thursday evening until the end of April and then road running until the end of August. Despite what many people down south think, (mainly through lack of information on our part) distance running is booming at the top end, as was shown by our Toyota Fund Run attracting nearly 1200 entries with 1125 finishers. First male was Adrian Wellington in a remarkable 32-20; the conditions were really bad, hot and humid. First female was Amanda Rafferty in the good time of 40 minutes 35 seconds. Our City to Surf (12.7km) was won last year by Jeff Coole in 37-33, a new record. Previous winners in this event have been Nick de Castella and some unknown name of Rob de Castella. We have two scheduled for this year, the NT Championships in July and the Darwin Adidas Marathon in September. Our President is Patricia Sedman, who last year became the first woman to break the 3-hour marathon mark in the Territory, recording 2 hours 58.06. Pat then went on to win the Albany Marathon in WA. She has recently; .moved into Veterans class so look out Dot! September 1983 Marathon was won by Adrian Wellington in the Darwin record time of 2 hours 35.40, some other finishers were Rod Ellis, 2-41-07, Dave Reader 2-46-28 ( a new Darwin veteran record surpassing the previous one by over 20 minutes), Neil Halligan 2-48-50, and yours truly 2-49-52. Anyone coming up to Darwin and looking for a run, give me a call, you will be made most welcome. Yours in Running, Bill Smith. Bill’s address is : William S. Smith, Box 42186, Casuarina P.O., NT 5792. Ph: 089-85-2766.

The series seems to generate an atmosphere.- sort of like a festival - which is quite different from any other track meet 11ve been in. This is also evident at other VMC events on the road, they are very much runners* affairs where you can run as you feel, and every outing is a success. I’m sure that this is only made possible by a lot of behind-the-scenes work by Janet and yourself. I for one appreciate this greatly. Due to other commitments (helping at Bingo games that has bought us $ 100 000 worth of synthetic track, pavillion and other sundry equipment here in Bendigo) I missed Thursday’s events. But I did see it on T.V. The coverage was excellent, although I was a bit dis appointed that the VMC didn’t rate a mention. Indeed, the VAA Newsletter (December 1983) carries a front page story and picture on the E.Z., but again, no mention of the V.M.C. With potential membership being eroded by the VRR, VAA events for unregistered runners and the proliferation of neighbourhood funnies, we could possibly benefit by a bit of a plug. I got the distinct impression while watching Deek’s track-side interview that he didn’t want to answer the question about Australia’s 10,000m prospects in L.A. He almost said that we had none, but said instead that we would have a very good chance (of a medal) if our top trsck runners could overcome injury and get their acts together. Perhaps jotting down a few suggested questions such as - "What factors influenced your decision to run here tonight, Rob, when you are by your own admission a road specialist?” or ,fHow does the Zatopek fit into your preparation fo r the Olympics ?M- could have ass isted the interviewer, who sounded like he’d be more at ease covering a VFL tribunal. Anyway, I think that the live telecast was one step in the right direction and that the continued high standard of the EZ does much for the distance runners’ image in the public’s eye. I'm going back to my studies in 1984. I ’ll be doing fourth year at Footscray I.T. to get my degree. I started this year past (’83) but pulled out after 7 weeks. The break has done me good and I’m confident of succeeding now. My running will have to take its turn as I c a n ’t afford another wasted year study-wise. I ’ve decided that 25km w i l l be my top distance (for races) and that once-a-day training w i l l have to suffice. I ’ve cut my milage back to about 50 miles (I peaked at 100 bafore a 2:50 at Dromana) and vary my workouts quite a lot now. I t ’s working wonders for my fitness. I ’ve walked 8 out of 9 P B ’s this season as well as several running P B ’s - taking 1-J mins off my 10,000 in the E.Z. I’m enjoying my athletics as much as when I did twice the work and intend to keep enjoy ing it, an d build my fitness base as I go. At this stage my marathon plans are: VMC ’85, S.Melb ’85 and Nike ’86, and I ’d like to stick with that to avoid the breakdown problems of the last 12 months. T h a t ’s all for now, keep up the good work Yours sincerely NEIL DEWHURST. E d i t o r ’s comment: Looks like very sensible planning, Neil. Stick to it. ****************************************************************************************** Dear Fred, I am writing to let you know that, as I am shifting interstate in my employ ment early in the New Year, I w i l l not be renewing my VMC membership. While I have only been a member for a few years (since 1979) I would like to express my thanks to you and the VMC Committee for the tremendous effort you all put in for the running community. Apart from the great range of well-organised events and the most informative newsletter, the great advantage of being a VMC member is the number of people you meet and friends you make. My best wishes to you all for Xmas, the New Year and the future. Good running GRAHAM BURKE. ****************************************************************************************** INTERNATIONAL MARATHONS 1984 Mar 18 BARCELONA, Spain April: 8, CANBERRA; 14, ROTTERDAM, Netherlands; 16, BOSTON, USA; 22, ROME, Italy 22, SEOUL, South Korea; 29, MADRID, Spain. V.M.C.NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1984 MARCH V0L.15 No* 4 WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF IT ? GDPS AND ENDS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS . Fred Lester. THE "RUNNING BILLBOARD" syndrome is very much in evidence whenever you pick up some publication or another, which happens to feature a running event. That prompts the thought, seditious as it may appear to a lot of sponsors, that the choice before people who look to fitness through running is very wide indeed. Sponsors have become a fact of life in the sporting industry and, believe me, no sporting activity is exempt, just some are more prominent and active than others o The major point that concerns us in all the promotional activity and HooHa that goes with the involvement of sponsors is the danger of swamping the meaning of participation in sport and the aims of personal satisfaction and fitness as its key factors. I make a very strong plea for the promotion of sanity, a balance in the objectives of running, which will develop and maintain a healthy and joyful part of daily life. WE'VE BEEN MUCKED AROUND ONCE AGAIN in relation to overseas competitors and consequent last minute fixture changes, a matter not entirely unconnected with the paragraph aboveo There is little point in blaming anyone in particular, the commercial tug-of-war for top names in athletics combined with a bureaucratic tug-of-war between various athletic authorities plus a pletora of public relation (?) experts (no knowledge of the game or its people required; all make up a fine witches' brew of very little (if any) marginal value to the running game in general 0 It is long overdue for people in responsible positions to realise that the key factor in achieving progress in our sport and satisfaction for its participants lies in the fulfilment of their expectations in systematic fashion* That does not mean a rigid foxm of competition but a planned development for creating opportunities at many different levels. This then must lead to greater sense of achievement, as well as heightened en joyment, on the part of the active sportsmen and women and,- Lin the end, more satisfied customers for the sponsors. HIE WINTER OLYMPICS, if you ignore the bilge poured out by some commentators, have pro vided a great prelude to this Olympic Year. There have been fine performances at the various venues around Sarajevo and a great display of genuine friendliness and sports manship, ignoring the narrow bounds of national flag waving. The Jugoslav skier who had just been deprived of first place by his Swiss rival was among the first to embrace the new winner with a display of real joy at his performance, that's what it is about. COBURG FUN RUNNERS are the latest group to extend what had previously been a limited objectives athletic club and cater for wider interests. Mainspring behind the moves around 'Bluestone College* is long distance runner of many years, Harold Stevens, with whom 1 have had many battles, but that is another story. They deserve full support in their venture. If you live in the vicinity of Coburg contact Coburg Fun Runners, 55 Woodland Avenue, PASCOE VALE SOUTH 3044. BY WAY OF ENCOURAGEMENT for VMC RR members who are a little diffident about officiating on sane duties on our club roster, I have yet to meet someone who is the 'perfect' official, especially when it comes to those who have not been at it very long. When it is stripped down to its basics each particular duty - marshalling, taking entries, recording, timing, putting up signs, etc, etc. - is just as important as the race manager*s. Without specific responsibilities carried out by many persons athletic events become simply a shambles. As an active runner you are aware when things go wrong, as an official you use that experience to prevent things going wrong, in other words: you become more aware of the problems to be avoided when you are running. THE READABILITY OF YOUR NEWSLETTER is heavily dependent on contribution of articles, comments, snippets of news and happenings and similar pars from a wide spectrum of our readership. Most of you still are not realsing that you probably are sitting on some interesting and/or entertaining item which deserves wider circulation than just your family or mates. If it is worth telling to someone it probably is also worth telling to a bigger audience; let's read about it I VMC NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1904 MARCH VOL 15 NO 4 VMC ROAD RUNNERS - DISTANCE RUNNER'S FIXTURE LIST (+ Melways ref) MAR 14 (Wed VMC 10K FR.Two Bridges 6.30pm (Map 44 B12) MAR 21 (Wed VMC RR 38th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 8.00 pm MAR 22 -25 AAU T &. The VMC ROAD RUNNERS CLUB is open to all amateur athletes. It caters for the newcomer to running, the experienced regular athlete, the young and the old, men and women, boys and girls. It represents a bridge as it were between the highly organised and the more casual approached in competition, leaving it to the participating individual how much or how little pressure he or she wishes to apply. The accent within the club is on enjoyment of running. We do not place expectations on anyone beyond asking runners to take a turn at performing some of the minimum chores required to conduct our events smoothly and for their own satisfaction. That mainly involves ensuring that runners do not lose their way, that everyone can find out what time they did and how they compare with either each other or their own previous runs. The CLUB MAINTAINS A PROGRAM throughout the year with the aim of enabling runners to test and improve their fitness at varying distances and, where possible, cater for different stages of fitness by offering a choice between a long or a short race on each date. Race entries are taken from 1 hour before advertised starting time.

Membership Fees are $8 per year (adult), $4 per year (under 20), and cover the Calendar Year and include the receipt of a quarterly Newsletter. Anyone can join up at any of our events or post the completed membership form together with the fee to the GENERAL SEC of the VMC RR, Fred Lester, 1 Golding Street, CANTERBURY 3126. ALL ENQUIRIES must be accompanied by a STAMPED and SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE (SSAE) of maximum standard size, 235mm x 120mm, for a reply. RACE FEES for members are $1, non-members pay a $1 surcharge, in the main race, EXCEPT for special events such as the VMC MARATHON, the VMC 50 MILER and the EMIL ZATOPEK 10,000m series. These special events, because of their importance and higher degree of organisation, require early pre-race entries (uaually 3 weeks ahead or as advertised in the VMC NEWSLETTER) and, in the case of the EMIL ZATOPEK series, membership and time qualifications as well as Late Fee conditions apply to remain manageable. Club singlets and T-shirts are available, either at races or from the office (00-1033) at a cost of #7 each. The VMC ROAD RUNNERS* try to co-operate closely with other distance running bodies as well as the Victorian Athletic Association, whether local or national. To participate in Athletic Association events runners must be financially registered at Association Fee. Basically, the VMC ROAD RUNNERS aim to keep organisational and technical details to the barest minimum essential to conducting their events satisfactorily for all.
