FALL 2013 UPDATE FOR LEAGUES, PSO & TSOs

Ultimate (UC) is proud to produce quarterly updates for leagues, PSOs and TSOs. These updates are intended to provide information on our activities to keep you up to date.

GENERAL Demographics and Grassroots Membership Some associations have already submitted their initial demographics and grassroots membership dues for 2013. If your association has not submitted your demographics and initial membership dues yet, please submit them shortly.

COMMUNICATIONS Media Do you have a local media story you would like to share with the rest of the country? Please let us know and submit your stories to the UC at [email protected].

Digital Magazine The 10th issue was released in July 2013. If you have any stories that you would like included in the winter issue, please submit them to Teri-Lynne Belanger at [email protected].

General Communication Canada continues distribution of our e-newsletter for competitive players to keep them informed of events, programs and opportunities.

In order to increase our transparency and accountability with our grassroots membership continues to provide quarterly reports.

Bring Your Disc to Work Day The 2013 Canadian Bring Your Disc to Work Day took place on Thursday, September 26th. We have received many great photos as part of the photo contest. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Translation Ultimate Canada continues to provide website and policy updates in both English and French.

National Membership System A RFP for a new national membership system has been distributed to companies. The National Membership System sub-committee is currently reviewing the proposals we have received.

COMPETITION Competition Committee The 2013 competition committee has met three times in 2013 with the final meeting planned for November.

2013 CUC A record 121 teams registered for the 2013 CUC series.

The junior division grew to 16 open and 12 women’s teams this year, with an incredible crowd of over one thousand spectators at the finals. This year also marked the first year of the women’s masters division with 4 teams in attendance. Congratulations to the champions in each division:

The 2014 CUC will be held in Waterloo, ON from August 11-17, 2014.

Observer Program A second observer training course took place this fall at the CEUUC in Kingston.

University Series The 2013 CUUC will take place in , ON, on October 18-20.

The 2013 CEUUC took place in Kingston, ON, on September 28-29. There were 12 women’s and 18 open teams in attendance.

The 2013 CWUUC tool place in Burnaby, BC, on September 28. There were 2 mixed, 6 open and 4 women’s teams registered for the event. Unfortunately due to heavy rain and high winds the event had to be cancelled after two rounds on the Saturday morning.

Two new university events are planned for 2013: the Prairie and Atlantic championships. The Prairie championship took place on October 4-5, 2013 in Regina, SK. There were 5 open and 4 women’s teams at the inaugural event. Congratulation to the University of Manitoba for winning both divisions!

The Atlantic championship is scheduled to take place on October19-20 in Fredericton, NB. There are currently 4 teams registered.

World Games Canada fought hard on day 3 of the World games to come away with a bronze medal. Congratulations to all of the athletes and the head coach on bringing home a medal!

Junior National Team Program The 2013 U23 World Championships took place in , this past July. Here are the results of our teams:

Coaching applications for the 2013 junior national teams will be available this fall.

JUNIOR PROGRAMS Development Committee The development committee has met three times in 2013, with a fourth meeting planned for November.

National Coaching Certification Program The competition stream evaluation pilots have now been completed. Ultimate Canada is currently working on finalizing our documentation for Conditional Approval with the Coaching Association of Canada and is organizing the training process for new learning facilitators and evaluators.

National Training Camp The inaugural national training camp program launched in 2013 with 2 camps. One took place in Ottawa and the other in . There were over 50 athletes that attended the camps. Many thanks to all of the coaches for supporting the camps!

Long-Term Athlete Development The Long-Term Athlete Development document for Ultimate is now available for leagues and PTSOs in English and French. A media rich booklet of the document is also currently being developed.

Pilots Ultimate Canada has launched its first Ultimate pilots for children and youth with programs run with Christie Lake Kids and the City of Ottawa. We are currently looking for clubs to partner in running programs with the Boys and Girls Club of

ORGANIZATIONAL INITIATIVES Ultimate Canada Conference The 2013 Ultimate Canada Conference will take place in , Alberta from November 15-17, 2013.

Spirit of the Game The Spirit of the Game committee piloted the WFDF spirit scoring system at the 2013 CUC and implemented new programs to support Spirit of the Game with the junior divisions. The committee will be meeting one more time in 2013 to review these initiatives.

Awards Calls for nominations for our annual awards program and the Ultimate Canada Hall of Fame have opened up. Information is available on the UC website.

Governance The governance sub-committee released a survey to the general Canadian Ultimate community and is continuing consultation with PTSOs. The sub-committee has forwarded a recommendation to the UC Board of Directors, and there will be a proposal raised for the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

SPORT CANADA Ultimate Canada has received a reply from Sport Canada regarding our additional documents. A few areas require additional materials, primarily around national team programs. We are currently working on developing these materials to meet the minimum requirements.
