  • Poor Clare Sister from Maryland Is Elected Abbess, Succeeds Mother Angelica
Poor Clare sister from Maryland is elected abbess, succeeds Mother Angelica BALTIMORE (CNS) — When Theresa Buck was still in high school at Mount de Sales Academy in the Baltimore suburb of Catonsville, she took a standardized assessment test meant to give some indication of the kind of career that would best suit her talents, personality and interests. Topping the list of potential careers, according to the assessment? Ministry as a woman religious. An exercise completed more than two decades ago turned out to be more than prescient. Not only did the former parishioner of St. Agnes Parish in Catonsville enter the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration at the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in rural Alabama, she recently was entrusted with leadership of the internationally known monastery. Today with the religious name of Mother Mary Paschal of the Lamb of God, she was elected abbess July 29, taking on the same post that was once held by Mother Angelica, founder of both the monastery and the global Catholic communications network known as EWTN. The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are a contemplative community of cloistered nuns whose charism is centered on adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Established in France in 1854, the religious community has monasteries that act autonomously. Betty Buck, Mother Mary Paschal’s mother, said the Alabama monastery had to get special permission from Rome to allow her daughter to become the abbess. At 38, she was not quite at the official minimum age requirement of 40 for the leadership position. Betty and her husband, Phil, parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City, Maryland, said their family was overwhelmed by the news of their daughter’s election.

This work has been complemented by sources duly acknowledged and cited using Chicago Manual Style. Signature Date 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT My study of theology was initiated in 2009 by the then Provost of St. Stephens Cathedral, Nairobi, the late Ven. Canon John Ndung’u who was a great encouragement to me. This was further made possible through my bishop the Rt. Rev. Joel Waweru and the Rev. Geoffrey Okapisi who were sources of inspiration. My studies at Carlile College (Church Army Africa) and St. Paul’s University laid a strong theological foundation and I appreciate among others the influence of the Rev. Dr. John Kiboi who introduced me to Philosophy, Systematic Theology, Ethics, and African Christian Theology that eventually became the foundation for my studies at the University of the South. I also appreciate the encouragement of my lecturers Mrs. Tabitha Waweru and Dr. Scholarstica Githinji during my Study of Education at Kenya Technical Trainers College and at Daystar University respectively. My interest in this topic came as a result of many sittings with two professors at the University of the South, Dr.

  • Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration Announce Merger of Two Communities CHARLOTTE —
Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration announce merger of two communities CHARLOTTE — By the mandate of the Holy See, the nuns of St. Joseph Adoration Monastery, currently based at St. Ann Parish in Charlotte, will merge with the community of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Ala., under the leadership of Mother Dolores Marie. Both communities are part of the same religious order, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, founded in 1854. The merger is expected to take place this fall. Our Lady of the Angels Monastery is known for its founding abbess, Mother Mary Angelica, who was also the foundress of the Eternal Word Television Network, EWTN. Mother Angelica has been in declining health since suffering a stroke in 2001. She was named Abbess Emerita for Life in 2009 by the Holy See and will continue to reside at the monastery in Hanceville. The six members of the Charlotte community will increase the membership of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery to 11 solemnly professed members, including Mother Angelica, in addition to those in formation. In 2010, the community of St. Joseph Monastery, then located in Portsmouth, Ohio, was invited to the Diocese of Charlotte by Bishop Peter Jugis. Over the past five years, the Poor Clares, in conjunction with the Te Deum Foundation, have acquired more than 500 acres in Cleveland County. A future monastery for the Poor Clares and a regional seminary have been planned for the site. The monastery building project will be placed on hold for now, but the Poor Clares will maintain their ownership of the property.

  • MOTHER ANGELICA Eternal Word Television Network Irondale, Ala
I Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, P.C.P.A. is 83 years old MOTHER ANGELICA Eternal Word Television Network Irondale, Ala. Few people believed Mother Angelica could pull off her dream of creating a cable network that Catholics could watch and learn from. But that didn't stop the determined nun, even though she knew next to nothing about the television business. With only $200 at her disposal, Mother Angelica built a TV studio in the garage of her monastery in Irondale, Ala., which led to the creation in 1981 of Eternal Word Television Network — the first cable channel dedicated solely to religious programming. Over the past 21 years EWTN has grown to 50 million television homes in the United States and another 30 million worldwide. EWTN has always been offered to the cable industry free of charge and has done so without any advertising revenue. One of the network's most popular programs, Mother Angelica Live, was the first national live religious call-in program format on cable television. ETWN has delivered live coverage of several religious events including several of Pope John Paul II's visits to the United States as well as International World Youth Days. Mother Angelica, now 83 and recovering from a stroke she suffered two years ago, also established the world's largest privately owned and operated short-wave radio station, a satellite-delivered AM and FM radio network, a printing operation that sends out thousands of publications each month and a website featuring live audio and video streaming of EWTN's programming.

  • The Social Doctrine of the Church Today
“Instaurare omnia in Christo” The Social Doctrine of the Church Today Christ, the King of the Economy Archbishop Lefebvre and Money Interview With Traditional Catholic Businessmen July - August 2016 It is not surprising that the Cross no longer triumphs, because sacrifice no longer triumphs. It is not surprising that men no longer think of anything but raising their standard of living, that they seek only money, riches, pleasures, comfort, and the easy ways of this world. They have lost the sense of sacrifice” (Archbishop Lefebvre, Jubilee Sermon, Nov. 1979). Milan — fresco from San Marco church, Jesus’ teaching on the duty to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God, the things that are God’s. Letter from the Publisher Dear readers, Because he is body and soul, man has basic human needs, like food, drink, clothes, and shelter, which he cannot obtain unless he has basic, minimal possessions. The trouble is that possessions quickly engender love for them; love breeds dependence; and depen- dence is only one step away from slavery. Merely human wisdom, like Virgil’s Aeneid, has stigmatized it as “the sacrilegious hunger for gold.” For the Catholic, the problem of material possessions is compounded with the issue of using the goods as if not using them, of living in the world without being of the world. This is the paradox best defined by Our Lord in the first beatitude: “Blessed be the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Our civilization is fast heading towards decomposition partly for not understanding these basic truths.
