Barely 20 years ago, in the mid-1990s, the sector was an irritant to the political system and was best discussed by geeks in hushed tones. Th e political system saw emerging ICTs as an aff ront to challenge its leaders’ power and control over information fl ow. Such was the environment that the fi rst eff orts to introduce the Internet in Kenya, in 1995, were met with an offi cial rebuff through a full- page advertisement by the then Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (KP&TC), a monopoly state enterprise, declaring that Internet services amounted to resale, and were therefore illegal. It was in this harsh environment that the Internet was born in Kenya. In short order, it was banned entirely in the government civil service until 1999. In such an environment, the Internet was only for brave nongov- ernment organizations (NGOs), geeks, and small companies with M. Indeed, none of the universities had Internet connections. Concerted advocacy changed the tide, and by 1997, the government promulgated the Telecommunication and Postal Sector Policy recognizing ICT’s contributions to development, and by 1999, passed the Kenya Information and Communication Act, a new telecom law establishing a multi-operator environment—followed shortly there- after by offi cial recognition of the Internet. -

Email:[email protected] Abstract The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) mobile communications system that provides a range of broadband services to the world of wireless and mobile communications. The UMTS delivers low-cost, mobile communications at data rates of up to 2 Mbps. It preserves the global roaming capability of second generation GSM/GPRS networks and provides new enhanced capabilities. The UMTS is designed to deliver pictures, graphics, video communications, and other multimedia information, as well as voice and data, to mobile wireless subscribers. UMTS also addresses the growing demand of mobile and Internet applications for new capacity in the overcrowded mobile communications sky. The new network increases transmission speed to 2 Mbps per mobile user and establishes a global roaming standard. UMTS allows many more applications to be introduced to a worldwide base of users and provides a vital link between today’s multiple GSM systems and the ultimate single worldwide standard for all mobile telecommunications, International Mobile Telecommunications–2000 (IMT–2000). The objective of this study was to assess the level of brand awareness and factors underlying brand preference of mobile phone service brands in Cape Coast market in Ghana. A total of 100 respondents who included individual consumers were selected using accidental simple sampling technique. Primary data was collected using structured interview schedules developed for each category of consumers. The findings of the study showed that most of the respondent consumers were aware of mobile phone operator brands despite having come across few operator service advertisements. Young males, mainly students in the tertiary institutions, single and of Christian affiliations, dominated the market. Four factors were identified as key determinants of mobile phone operator service choice, namely promotion, price and availability of product, attractive packaging and product quality. There is need for mobile phone operators to incorporate these findings in the formulation of responsive marketing strategies. -

RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 5G: ISSUES & CHALLENGES March 2017 The issues and challenges surrounding 5G The telecoms industry is currently in the process of designing the technologies that are due to take over from 4G, which is still being deployed today. A great deal of work is thus underway to prepare these “5G” technologies. To prepare for the arrival of this new generation of technologies, Arcep wanted to take a detailed look at the industry to better understand what is in the works. This report is the fruit of the interviews and research that Arcep conducted over the course of 2016, and which the Authority wanted to publish as a way to contribute to the public debate over 5G. Its aim it to provide as objective and exhaustive an overview as possible, and deliver a concise, informative snapshot of the work that is currently underway on the future generation of mobile networks. This report reflects the views of the stakeholders who were interviewed, but in no way represents Arcep’s positions on or roadmap for 5G. Arcep awarded in 2015 the 700 MHz band and is currently working towards licensing the 3.5 GHz band, both of which have been identified as 5G bands. Arcep is also working with the Direction générale des entreprises and the Agence nationale des fréquences towards enabling spectrum for 5G. Arcep would like to thank all of the entities (listed on the last page) who agreed to take part in this process, and who were willing to contribute to the regulator’s investigation into the development of 4G’s successor. -

During this time, the subscriber base grew exponentially by about 700% while prices declined only moderately by about 41%. We believe that prices alone cannot account for such rapid diffusion and network effects have influenced the evolution of the industry. We put this view to the test by using publicly available data on subscriptions, price indices and churn rates. Using churn rates gave us approximate sales levels which enabled us to use standard methods to investigate the effect of network size on demands. Our estimates of a system of demand functions show that network effects played a significant role in the diffusion of mobile services in Germany.
