V Abstract (englisch) At the beginning of the 20th century, modern Greece was a small and still young kingdom whose geostrategic position in the Mediterranean was not seen by the predominantly conti- nental-oriented major powers Austria-Hungary and Germany. Eleftherios Venizelos, a lawyer and politician from Crete, led a financially land-based country into two successful wars. These wars doubled the size of Greek territory. How did he do it, which networks did he use and how did the ambassadors of the Dual Alliance see his politics? To answer the research questions, the present work has been divided into two main parts: (1) A description of a narrative diplomacy story from the point of view of the ambassadors of the Dual Alliance and (2) An explication in the form of both an analysis of the networks of Venizelos and one Analysis of selected ambassador reports by means of qualitative content analysis in the context of a social paradigm accompanying historical research. The description provided the background to classify the results of the analysis chapters. The network analyzes show the importance of publishing at the beginning of the 20th century, the relevance of clans, the importance of friendships, and the personal support of women. The content analyzes supplemented these results: The delegates of the Dual Alliance saw the ge- ostrategic potential that lay in this maritime kingdom, their reports remained unanswered in Vienna and Berlin. They valued - but only after the first two years of rule - the capabilities of Venizelos well. Venizelos became visible as a complex-minded and thought-provoking politi- cian who, due to his network resources, valued global developments well. • The Greek New Right and the Eve of Conservative Populism
The Visio Journal ● Volume 4 ● 2019 The Greek New Right and the Eve of Conservative Populism By Athanasios Grammenos* The economic crisis in the Eurozone and its dire consequences for Greece terminated the post-1974 political consensus, which was based on a pro-European and democratic concord. The collapse of the social-democratic Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in 2012 allowed space for the radical Left to become the new pole of the political system. To this advancement, the conservatives, being the other pole, responded with a prompt enlargement attempt to the populist right-wing, engulfing several elements of the New Right. This new political order had had evident effects on the party’s social and economic agenda, escalating the political debate at the expense of established liberal principles. While in opposition (2015-2019), New Democracy (ND), member of the European Peo- ple’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, voted against a series of liberal bills (gender issues, separation of Church and State, the Macedonian issue, etc.) giving out positions with authoritarian and populist essence. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the rise of the New Right in Greece (2012-2019) in both rhetoric and practice, and its consequences for law institutions, human rights and foreign affairs. It is argued that ND, currently holding office, has been occupied by deeply conservative elements as a response to the rise of the radical Left, adopting occasionally ultra-conservative positions in a wide range of social issues. Although the case of Greece is unlike to those in other European countries, nevertheless, to the extent to which the preservation of traditional hierarchies come into question, the political platform of the Greek New Right, which has embedded authoritarian attitudes cultivating an anti-liberal sub-culture to the party’s voters, is in accordance with several European conservative movements like in Hungary, Austria or Czechia.

  • Educating the Whole Person? the Case of Athens College, 1940-1990
Educating the whole person? The case of Athens College, 1940-1990 Polyanthi Giannakopoulou-Tsigkou Institute of Education, University of London A thesis submitted for the Degree of EdD September 2012 Abstract This thesis is a historical study of the growth and development of Athens College, a primary/secondary educational institution in Greece, during the period 1940-1990. Athens College, a private, non-profit institution, was founded in 1925 as a boys' school aiming to offer education for the whole person. The research explores critically the ways in which historical, political, socio-economic and cultural factors affected the evolution of Athens College during the period 1940-1990 and its impact on students' further studies and careers. This case study seeks to unfold aspects of education in a Greek school, and reach a better understanding of education and factors that affect it and interact with it. A mixed methods approach is used: document analysis, interviews with Athens College alumni and former teachers, analysis of student records providing data related to students' achievements, their family socio-economic 'origins' and their post-Athens College 'destinations'. The study focuses in particular on the learners at the School, and the kinds of learning that took place within this institution over half a century. Athens College, although under the control of a centralised educational system, has resisted the weaknesses of Greek schooling. Seeking to establish educational ideals associated with education of the whole person, excellence, meritocracy and equality of opportunity and embracing progressive curricula and pedagogies, it has been successful in taking its students towards university studies and careers.

  • Negotiating Im/Politeness Via Humor in the Greek Parliament Marianthi Georgalidou University of the Aegean [email protected]
Georgalidou, Marian. Negotiating Im/politeness via Humor in the Greek Parlament Estudios de Lingüística del Español 43 (2021), pp. 99-121 Negotiating Im/politeness via Humor in the Greek Parliament Marianthi Georgalidou University of the Aegean [email protected] Resumen El objetivo de este estudio es examinar la manera en la que el humor sirve como medio de negociación des/cortés en el discurso de los parlamentarios griegos. (Harris 2001; Morreall 2005; Bippus 2007; Tsakona and Popa 2011; Georgalidou 2011).

This writer has re Tcently come up in the field of the studies of the Greek literature and, although there are neither many translations of her works in foreign languages nor many theses or disser tations, she was chosen for the great interest for her works. Her books have been read by many generations, so she is considered a classical writer of Modern Greek Literature. The way she uses the Greek language, the unique characters of her heroes that make any child or adolescent identified with them, the understood organization of her material are only a few of the main characteristics and advantages of her texts. It is also of high importance the fact that her books can be read by adults, as they can provide human values, such as love, hope, enjoyment of life, the educational significance of playing, the innocence of the infancy, the adventurous adolescence, even the unemployment, the value of work and justice. Thus, the educative importance of her texts was the main reason for writing this article. As for the structure of the article, at first, it presents a brief biography of the writer.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-06490-4 - July Crisis: The World’s Descent into War, Summer 1914 T. G. Otte Frontmatter More information July Crisis This is a magisterial new account of Europe’s tragic descent into a largely inadvertent war in the summer of 1914. T. G. Otte reveals why a century- old system of Great Power politics collapsed so disastrously in the weeks from the ‘shot heard around the world’ on 28 June to Germany’s declar- ation of war on Russia on 1 August. He shows definitively that the key to understanding how and why Europe descended into world war is to be found in the near-collective failure of statecraft by the rulers of Europe and not in abstract concepts such as the ‘balance of power’ or the ‘alliance system’. In this unprecedented panorama of Europe on the brink, from the ministerial palaces of Berlin and Vienna to Belgrade, London, Paris and St Petersburg, T. G. Otte reveals the hawks and doves whose decision-making led to a war that would define a century and which still reverberates today. T. G.
