ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Tribute Resolution for Terry Belanger Upon His Retirement as Director of

hereas, Terry Belanger has dedicated himself for over 35 years to promoting the Wbroadest possible understanding of the bibliographical, cultural, and historical significance of the materials held in rare book, manuscript, and special collections libraries; and

hereas, Terry Belanger established a program at the School of WLibrary Service for the training of rare book and special collections that produced many of the country’s leaders in the field, including seven chairs of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL); and

hereas, Terry Belanger’s commitment to the profession has also been Wdemonstrated in decades of service to RBMS, including service as chair of the section and many committees; and

hereas, Terry Belanger has provided dedicated service to many other affiliated Worganizations, including the of America, the American Printing History Association, and the Grolier Club of New York; and

hereas, in 1983, Terry Belanger founded Rare Book School at Columbia University Win order to expand the audience for knowledge and appreciation of the book beyond those engaged in a degree program; and,

hereas, in 1992, Terry Belanger moved Rare Book School to its present home at Wthe , where institutional support has strengthened its mission; and

hereas, Terry Belanger has contributed to the knowledge of bibliography and the Wspecial collections library profession through his numerous courses and lectures as well as through the publications and educational videos produced by Rare Book School’s Book Arts Press; and

hereas, Terry Belanger has extended the reach of Rare Book School by offering Wcourses in several other cities including New York City, Baltimore and Washington, DC ; and ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Tribute Resolution for Terry Belanger Upon His Retirement as Director of Rare Book School

hereas, Terry Belanger has contributed to the development of worldwide Weducational opportunities for rare book professionals through support of programs modeled on Rare Book School such as the École de Institut d’histoire du livre in Lyons, France, the Australasian Rare Book School in Australia and New Zealand, and the California Rare Book School in Los Angeles; and

hereas, Terry Belanger has ensured the longevity of Rare Book School through a Wsuccessful endowment campaign supported by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and more than 800 Friends of Rare Book School; and

hereas, in 2005 Terry Belanger became the second member of the library Wprofession to receive a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship, which he has used to further promote Rare Book School and support its endowment; now, therefore, be it

esolved, that the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College Rand Research Libraries congratulates Terry Belanger upon his retirement as director of Rare Book School, and honors and celebrates his career and achievements together with his deep commitment and service to members of the special collections and scholarly communities.
