Pegs, Cords, and Ghuls: Meter of Classical Arabic Poetry Hazel Scott Haverford College Department of Linguistics, Swarthmore College Fall 2009 There are many reasons to read poetry, filled with heroics and folly, sweeping metaphors and engaging rhymes. It can reveal much about a shared cultural history and the depths of the human soul; for linguists, it also provides insights into the nature of language itself. As a particular subset of a language, poetry is one case study for understanding the use of a language and the underlying rules that govern it. This paper explores the metrical system of classical Arabic poetry and its theoretical representations. The prevailing classification is from the 8th century C.E., based on the work of the scholar al-Khaliil, and I evaluate modern attempts to situate the meters within a more universal theory. I analyze the meter of two early Arabic poems, and observe the descriptive accuracy of al-Khaliil’s system, and then provide an analysis of the major alternative accounts. By incorporating linguistic concepts such as binarity and prosodic constraints, the newer models improve on the general accessibility of their theories with greater explanatory potential. The use of this analysis to identify and account for the four most commonly used meters, for example, highlights the significance of these models over al-Khaliil’s basic enumerations. The study is situated within a discussion of cultural history and the modern application of these meters, and a reflection on the oral nature of these poems. The opportunities created for easier cross-linguistic comparisons are crucial for a broader understanding of poetry, enhanced by Arabic’s complex levels of metrical patterns, and with conclusions that can inform wider linguistic study.* Introduction Classical Arabic poetry is traditionally characterized by its use of one of the sixteen * I would like to thank my advisor, Professor K. -

However, not until recently has the role and importance of literature in the English and Arabic as the first or second level classrooms been given emphasis. This study examines how Arabic poems and proverbs can be used as effective methods in the teaching and learning of Arabic to non-native speakers in Malaysia. It proposes that new and more innovative and effective methods should be introduced to replace the current conventional methods of teaching Arabic. The teaching of literature; i.e., Arabic poems and proverbs requires a passion for literature itself. When the passion for literature has been instilled, language learners will enjoy their literature courses, and find them to be easier than before they had this awareness. As a result of the learners‟ advancement and acquired appreciation, they are able to access the vast linguistic treasures Arabic literature has to offer and therefore, simultaneously improve their competence in Arabic. It draws on the notion of fragment and actual fragmentary testimonies to study how pre- modern Iberian things and texts are reconstituted and used for various projects of personal, institutional, national and transnational reconstitution in the present. The corpus objects are necessarily diverse in chronological scope, with examples from the medieval, early-modern and modern periods, and touch upon works of many genres: chivalric romance, royal and personal correspondence, early-modern and modern historiography, Hispano-Arabic and Hispano-Hebrew lyric, inscriptions, pre-modern and modern biographies and 21st century book exhibitions. The dissertation proposes that Iberian fragments are engaged in various forms of reconstitution or production in the present and, at the same time, are held as timeless, unchanging entities that have the capability to allow users to connect with something genuinely old, truly Spanish and, indeed, eternal. -

He is sometimes considered the father of Arabic poetry. His qaseeda, or long poem, "Let us stop and weep" (Arabic: ??? ???) is one of the seven Mu'allaqat, poems prized as the best examples of pre-Islamic Arabian verse. Imru' al-Qais was born in the Najd region of northern Arabia sometime in the early 6th century AD. His father was said to be Hujr bin al-Harith (??? ??? ?????? / ?ujr ibn al-?arith), the Kindah monarchy's regent over the tribes of Asad and Ghatfan, and it is believed that Imru' al-Qais was born in the territory of Asad. His mother was said to be Fatimah bint Rabi'ah al-Taghlibi (????? ??? ????? ??????? / Fa?imah bint Rani‘ah al-Taghlibi). Legend has it that Imru' al-Qais was the youngest of his father's sons, and began composing poetry while he was still a child. His father strongly disapproved of this habit in his son, believing poetry to be an unseemly pastime for the son of a king. His father also disapproved of Imru' al-Qais' scandalous lifestyle of drinking and chasing women, and eventually banished him from his kingdom, or so the legend goes. Later, when the tribe of Asad rebelled and assassinated his father, Imru' al-Qais was the only one of his brothers to take responsibility for avenging his death. -

PINAKI ROY Sidney Keyes: The War-Poet Who ‘Groped For Death’ f the Second World War (1939-45) was marked by the unforeseen annihilation of human beings—with approximately 60 million military and civilian deaths (Mercatante 3)—the second global belligerence was also marked by an Iunforeseen scarcity in literary commemoration of the all-destructive belligerence. Unlike the First World War (1914-18) memories of which were recorded mellifluously by numerous efficient poets from both the sides of the Triple Entente and Central Powers, the period of the Second World War witnessed so limited a publication of war-writing in its early stages that the Anglo-Irish litterateur Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-72), then working as a publications-editor at the English Ministry of Information, was galvanised into publishing “Where are the War Poets?” in Penguin New Writing of February 1941, exasperatedly writing: ‘They who in folly or mere greed / Enslaved religion, markets, laws, / Borrow our language now and bid / Us to speak up in freedom’s cause. / It is the logic of our times, / No subject for immortal verse—/ That we who lived by honest dreams / Defend the bad against the worse’. Significantly, while millions of Europeans and Americans enthusiastically enlisted themselves to serve in the Great War and its leaders were principally motivated by the ideas of patriotism, courage, and ancient chivalric codes of conduct, the 1939-45 combat occurred amidst the selfishness of politicians, confusing international politics, and, as William Shirer notes, by unsubstantiated feelings of defeatism among world powers like England and France, who could have deterred the offensive Nazis at the very onset of hostilities (795-813). -

Alexander Elinson 83 Making Light Work of Serious Praise: a Panegyric zajal by Lisān al-Dīn ibn al-Khaṭīb1 Alexander Elinson Hunter College Introduction Lisān al-Dīn ibn al-Khaṭīb (d. 1375) demonstrated a staggering knowledge of Arabic language, poetry, prose, philosophy, and religious sciences. His prodigious literary output has secured his place as one of the last great Arab writers of al- Andalus, serving as the inspiration for al-Maqqarī’s (d. 1628) voluminous history, Nafḥ al-ṭīb min ghuṣn al-Andalus al-raṭīb wa-dhikr wazīrihā Lisān al-Dīn ibn al- Khaṭīb (The Perfumed Breeze from the Tender Branch of al-Andalus, with mention of its vizier, Lisān al-Dīn ibn al-Khaṭīb). In addition to his large corpus of official diplomatic missives, travelogues, maqāmās (literary rhymed prose epistles), qaṣīdas (formal odes), and theological, philosophical, historical, biographical and literary treatises, he was also quite interested in the strophic form; he collected an anthology of muwashshaḥs (strophic poems) entitled Jaysh al-tawshiḥ (The Army of Stanzaic Poetry), even composing a number of muwashshaḥs himself,2 and as an admirer of the Sufi poet al-Shushtarī (d. 1269), he composed a number of zajals (colloquialized strophic poems) on his model (see Ibn al-Khaṭīb 1989, 238).3 In addition to the zajals that he composed with a religious intent, Ibn al-Khaṭīb composed one zajal for his patron Sultan Muḥammad V al-Ghanī bi-llāh (d. 1391), a panegyric celebrating his return to power in Granada after a three-year exile in North Africa. In this essay, I will examine this zajal in order to evaluate the ways in which he exploits language and form to produce a unique and effective panegyric. -

The investigation charts and analyzes the demographics of 64 poets who were published in 1967, and 75 poets who were published in four small press literary magazines in 2010. The 2010 magazines were purposely sampled as representatives of specific geographical areas in Canada (i.e., the West Coast, the Prairies, Central Canada, and the East Coast). The results indicate that in 1967 female poets were less likely to be published; however, 43 years later, this bias has been rectified. -

Oral Tradition, 4/1-2 (1989): 174-88 Sung Poetry in the Oral Tradition of the Gulf Region and the Arabian Peninsula Simon Jargy Historical Background As far back as we can go in the past history of the Arabs and Arabia, we fi nd poetry present as a huge memorial to their real and imaginary heroic exploits, as a witness to their way of life and feelings, and most of all as an expression of the deepest roots of their soul. Being essentially oral in its origins and developments, this poetry, with its rhythms, intonations, accents, and long or short syllables fi tted in quite naturally with music. In the old classical Arabic terminology, poetry (Shicr) identifi es with song (Nashīd): reciting it is synonymous with singing it (Anshada al-Shicr). This bond between Shicr (poetry) and Inshād (chant or recitative) still has the same meaning in the spoken Arabic of the Peninsula and the Gulf region where Nishīda (song) is synonymous with Giṣīda (poem). In pre-Islamic Arabia, Inshād likely had a dual function: religious and social. Both stem from the rhythmical syllables of the Arabic language (rhymed prose: Sajc, and metrical poetry: Shicr), as well as from rhythmical movements of camels. Coming from ancient times, this is the Ḥidā’ (literally “stimulating the camel’s step”) that the Bedouin sings following the steps of his camel and for his own entertainment. It has survived in the actual form we call “recitative” or “cantilena,” as the common Ḥadwā still designates, in the spoken Bedouin dialect of the Gulf, the folk songs of both the desert and the sea. -
