However, the site occupies a relatively large parcel of land within the archaeologically rich Kennet Valley. Once a planning consent has been gained, it is considered that it may be necessary to provide further information on the archaeological potential of the site by means of field evaluation.     CHILTON FOLIAT CONSERVATION AREA STATEMENT December 2003 CHILTON FOLIAT CONSERVATION AREA This Statement of the Chilton Foliat Conservation Area has been produced to identify and record those special qualities of the village that make up its architectural and historic character. This is to provide a sound basis for local plan policies and development control decisions and to assist the development of proposals for the preservation or enhancement of the character or appearance of the area. The Statement contains an assessment of the Chilton Foliat Conservation Area and is intended for all those with an interest in the village, or undertaking work on its buildings, landscape, streets or public spaces. By drawing attention to the distinctive features of Chilton Foliat it is intended that its character will be protected and enhanced for the benefit of this and future generations. The river is of considerable importance in the historic development of Chilton Foliat but within the Conservation Area it is largely Chilton Foliat Conservation Area was designated in November 1974 hidden from public view. and since then the boundary has remained unchanged. The Conservation Area extends from the bridge and Bridge House at the south-eastern end of the village to west of the church and encompasses buildings on both sides of the street. The former buildings of Manor Farm to the north- west of the village are included; 20th century buildings at Stag Hill are outside the area. Open space is included where it is important to the setting of the village. The southern boundary of the Conservation Area is the south bank of the River Kennet.

    Robsons Directory Extract 1839 Ramsbury with Albourne The village of Ramsbury gives it name to the hundred in which it stands, on the banks of the Kennet, 72 miles west from London. 17 north - east from Devizes, and 25 north from Salisbury. This was in the beginning of the 12 th century an episcopal See, removed before the conquest of Sarum. The church of the Holy Cross is a vicarage of £219, annual value, a peculiar of the Dean of Salisbury, and is considered the mother church to the cathedral. The population is 2,395, and the assessed property amounts to £9,540. A brewery is its only source of trade, a great quantity of the beer being sent to London. There are fairs on the 14th of May and 10th of October. The operation of the new poor law has placed both Ramsbury and Aldbourne in the union of Hungerford, county of Berks. The Kennet flows in a broad expanse of water, bearing an island on its bosam, through the park of Ramsbury manor, the seat of Sir Francis Burdett, Bart.; and the grounds, bordered with woods, decline in easy slopes to its banks. The finely wooded park of Littlecote in which a large and very beautiful piece of tessellated pavement was discovered some years since, is partly in this parish. Littlecote House was the scene of a mysterious and dreadful tale, related by Sir Walter Scott, in the notes to his poem of Rokeby. Crow Wood, Marriage Hill House, Chilton House, and Chilton Lodge are contiguous seats. The village of Aldbourn, 6 miles north-east from Marlborough, in the hundred of Lakely, takes its name from the small river on which it is seated, one of the branches of the Kennet.

Much has been written about the industrialised nature of 20th Century war and its impact on battlefield landscapes, on material culture and the minds and bodies of those who were there, and on the generations who have followed since. In contrast, relatively little has been recorded or is known about the effect that the same hostilities have had on other parallel yet distant landscapes, on objects and memories far removed from the front-line, on the quiet backwaters of England.! ! !Using the lens provided by modern conflict archaeology and a case study focused on the lives of those who lived in the Wiltshire village of Ramsbury and the surrounding area during the Second World War, this essay will explore the effect of modern conflict on a small corner of rural England.! ! ! What, therefore, can the “multidisciplinary, anthropologically informed endeavour known as ‘Modern Conflict Archaeology’ ” (Saunders 2012: iix) tell us? Whilst Ramsbury’s landscape does not claim to have been ‘drenched in hot metal’ (Terraine 1996: 9), or profess to the dramatic legacy of First World War Flanders or Second World War Normandy, from the autumn of 1939 to the summer of 1945 the village was at the centre of another unique conflict landscape; a symbolic landscape which also stands as a testament to the industrial nature and scale of 20th Century warfare.
