7 Koroit trial report from Nancy Halsall (Novice judge) and Harry Kelly (Improver/Open judge). We would like to give credit where it is undoubtedly due and thank Barry Paton on the way he ran his trial. Everything went like clock-work. The organisation of the trial was perfect, nothing left to chance. The sheep were excellent trial sheep, the obstacles were great and the course was a credit to him. Anything that was needed by the judges and the workers was available. And to round it all off there was the NSW course. We, once again, would like to thank all the let-out workers who worked long hours and did such a great job. To those who did the time-keeping and kept us up to date on the scores, thank you. Plus Barry also provided a small paddock (with sheep) for anyone who wished to give their dogs a workout before competing. What more could you ask for? There was plenty of parking space and the weather was in our favour. Once again, we would like to thank Barry and his two right-hand men, Pat and Danny. What a team. The effort from these three certainly made the trial the success it was. Top job. Well done.. Nancy and Harry

DRAW Thank you to the small number of trials that have sent me your draw. It would be appreciated if a copy of your trial draw could be forwarded to me to enable enquiries to be answered such as what time does the trial start, checking that triallers are current members etc. Either

email your draw to [email protected] OR post to my postal address. A copy of the draw is to be sent to the Registrar Kerry Dodge, 947 Smythesdale Road, SNAKE VALLEY. VIC. 3351 or e-mailed to: [email protected] for

checking dog registrations.

60th YEAR OF THE BADEN POWELL VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD TRIAL This prestigious event was first run in 1956. Since then it has been held at six venues in Victoria. From 1956-1988 it was held at Farm Road, Werribee, 1989-1996 at Werribee Park, 1997-2000 at Oakbank Park, Mansfield, 2001-2005 at the Parks family property at Mansfield, in 2006 at Hamilton, and then from 2007-2014 at Haddon. This year it will be held at John and Mary Tuddenham’s property at Ross Creek (near Ballarat).

In the early years of this trial workers came from all States (including Tasmania) to compete. Sometimes there were between 100-145 entries.

There have been some very well-known workers that have won this event more than once: L.M. Nugent, W.R. Marshall, C.L. Camin, J.M. Hiscock, G. Prince, R. Dodge – to name a few. J.M. Hiscock won it four times, twice with Moorlands Judy. Greg Prince also won four times, twice with Princes Snow. What a great achievement from both men. In 2014 Davina Campbell, working Glamorgan Peter, was the first woman to ever win this event.

19

Condolences to the family and friends of Tom Brough Tom was born in the western district and farmed in Werneth for many years. This is where he met his long-time partner Cheryl, daughter of Ross Dodge. After many years of following Ross and Jim trialling Tom decided to give it a go himself. He started with an old dog bred by Ross. Tom was known to take off his hat and stomp on it when things didn’t go to plan on the trial ground. Tom was responsible for getting the Cressy trial up and running again after it had not been held for several years. He also started a trial at Lismore that always attracted good entries. He was very passionate about keeping country football and other events going in small local communities and served for several years running the Rokewood and Cressy football clubs. In the late 90’s Cheryl and Tom left Victoria to head to Queensland, where Tom classed wool around many outback Queensland woolsheds. This ended his trialling. He continued to take an interest in trialling, always on the phone the minute a trial completed wanting to know the results. Those phone calls will be greatly missed. Vale Tom

Trial Rules Please note that the below rule change will not come into effect until 1st July 2015 . Trial Rule Change: 1(C,2) [ or l(c) and move other categories sequentially] That an additional category be added to the classes. A further class called Novice Handler.

A dog that has won a Novice Handler trial is still eligible to compete in Novice

Trial

A Novice Handler class may be run concurrently with the Novice class at any

trial. i.e .one run will determine the score for both the Novice and Novice Handler class. The finals may be run separately or may be run concurrently for those eligible for prizes in either of the Novice classes. The Victorian Working Sheep Dog Association Champion Sheep Dog Field Trials This year’s competition for the sheep dog field trial for the Captain Payne 50- guinea trophy will be decided at Swan Hill.

The trial will be conducted by the Swan Hill sheep dog club in conjunction with the Victorian Working Sheep Dog Association and will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday 30th June and 1st July, 1936. This will be the sixth occasion on which this trophy has been competed for, as it must be won three times in succession or five times in all before becoming the property of the ultimate winner.

Prize money of ₤8, ₤5, ₤3, ₤2 and ₤1 is offered and the winner each year receives a gold medal suitably inscribed.

A trial for dogs competing in pairs will also be conducted with prizes of ₤3, ₤2 and ₤1.

The course for both trials provides for a cast of 400 yards, and the conditions and the work required from the dogs is similar to that encountered in their every day job on the farm.

Entries for both trials will close at 12 noon on Saturday, 20th June, and must be forwarded to the Secretary, The Victorian Working Sheep Dog Association, Temple Court, 422 Collins Street, Melbourne, C1.

HISTORY OF THE CAPTAIN A.E.T. PAYNE SHEEP DOG FIELD TRIAL. When the Victorian Working Sheep Dog Association was convened in 1927, following a conference held during the Royal Agricultural Show, Captain A.E.T.Payne was unanimously elected President of the Association, and he subsequently established a Field Trial with a Trophy (to be won 3 times in succession or 5 times in all before being won outright) The object of this Trial was to promote the breeding and handling of a particular type of working dog and this standard has been adhered to ever since. It does not exist to perpetuate the Captain’s name, but has been conducted for over 70 years to keep faith with an ideal. ideal is represented by the enduring set of rules and the schedule of past winners. Starting in 1931, this trial was held at 25 venues all over Victoria until 1957, when Boort ran it for 12 years; Undera for 5, and Tongala for 29 years.

The first Trophy was worth 50 Guineas, increasing gradually to $400, which was won outright in 1981 by Mr Jim Nevett of Tatura. His other wins were in 1966, 70, 73, and 74. Mr Douglas Payne of Kilmore, the great grand nephew of Captain Payne, replaced the $400. and the interest was added to the principal until it was capped at $2000.

The Trial was won outright again in 2004 by the late Mr Barry Dicker; his other wins being in 1988, 91, 99, and 2001, and Mr Douglas Payne once again donated $2000 to be invested as prize money for this prestigious Trial Mr Dicker also donated $250, and this amount of $2250. is now invested with Still and Co, Barristers and Solicitors of Kilmore; the interest going into Association revenue, and the original conditions still applying. Mr Payne has also presented the Association with a beautiful Trophy, on which he has had inscribed all the names of the winners and their dogs. This Trophy is on display at the Royal Melbourne Showground Administration Building and each year Mr Payne brings it to the presentations at the appropriate venue. The Association is extremely grateful to Mr Douglas Payne for his continued support, participation, interest and attendance at the presentations.

There were 2 special Trophies awarded at this Trial: The “FA Powell” Novice Trophy for the Novice dog scoring highest points (to be won 3 times in succession or 5 times in all) and this was won by Mr David Hines of St Arnaud in 1988. It was renamed the “David Hines” Novice Trophy which David donated from 1989 to 1995. The other was a Trophy for the highest score by a dog working in its First Field Trial. In 1990, this Trophy was named the “Jim Nevett” Memorial First Field Trophy in honour of the late Jim Nevett.

There are two judges appointed for this Trial. The cast is 400 yards. The worker must remain in the 20 ft ring until the sheep are through the second obstacle. The 4th obstacle is a pen – 6 ft. wide, 9 ft deep with 6 ft gate to shut. The worker must keep his hand on the gate. Time: 16 minutes.

TRIAL RULES ONE & TWO DOG WORKERS This rule still seems to be creating confusion with Trial Committees and triallers  A One Dog Worker may only enter Dog A in the Novice and/or Open/Improver. A One Dog Worker is placed at the end of the draw in Round 4. If they enter/work Dog B, Dog C etc, then they are no longer a One Dog Worker and must be drawn appropriately  A Two Dog Worker may only enter Dog A and Dog B in the Novice and/or Open/Improver. These two dogs are drawn in Rounds 3 & 4. If they enter/work Dog C, Dog D etc, then they are no longer a Two Dog Worker and must be drawn appropriately. A trialler who enters Dog A in the Novice and Dog B in the Improver/Open IS NOT A TWO DOG WORKER as the TWO dogs cannot be drawn in the last two rounds of either the Novice and/or Open/Improver.  A One or Two Dog Worker cannot work another dog (2nd or 3rd) entered under another triallers name  If not indicated on Entry form, then triallers with one or two dogs will be drawn as normal in rounds 1 and rounds 1 & 2 respectively.

REPORT FROM TRAINING DAY HELD AT NEVILLE WILLIAMS’ PROPERTY The training weekend 21/22 Feb 2015 was well attended with people coming from across Victoria and as far as Adelaide and NSW. The attendance was approximately 45 handlers and many with 2, 3 and 4 dogs. One couple came from down past Geelong and said they just came for a drive to see what the training was about. HyPro sponsored the weekend training workshop with a pallet of their finest. On Sunday we ran a mini trial of 6 dogs judged by Colin Reid with a gallery of comments from the side. The small course worked well for the experience of beginner triallers with each competitor winning a bag of DogPro. A big thank you to Hannah Willis for donating the sheep and to Phil McLean for helping to arrange the sheep. Thank you to the VWSDA trainers who attended: Ken Jelbart, Colin Reid, Moulee Siriharan, John Tuddenham, Graham & Nancy Halsall, Jim Dodge, Des Church and Pam Vickery, without the generosity of these people the training days could not be run. The VWSDA members who attended all had a positive input, like George Lane who said he was only there for an hour and he finished up staying all day. Wow, can he talk, well done George. The next 2-day training workshop will be held at John and Mary Tuddenham’s property (near Ballarat) on 13-14 June. Contact the VWSDA President: Bill Paton 0419015129 for further information. More training is offered for competitors and prospective competitors with a judges clinic to be held on July 5th, this clinic will be run at the Don Bosco Youth Centre in Sydney Road, Brunswick, and will consist of a 4-senior judge panel. The judges will explain scores from video runs and each judge will have their time explaining what scores and what doesn’t. Speak to Neville Williams for an update - 0437 400 000. If we’ve missed out on thanking anyone then please accept my apology. All in all we had good weather, good sheep, good people, good dogs and good fun. Neville Williams

President’s Report

I hope everyone had an enjoyable festive season and have returned feeling fresh and enthusiastic for this year’s trialling season. Our first trial for the year was the Ray Farley Memorial Trial followed by Deans Marsh, Ballarat, Cressy, Koroit, Commonwealth Championships at Port Fairy and Benalla. All these trials were successful events and were enjoyed by all who attended. The Australian Dog of the Year completion was held at the Commonwealth Championships and created a lot of interest and positive comments. Our congratulations go to Laurie Slater and Wondara Drift from NSW on their win. We would like to thank John Tuddenham for all his work organising the Dogpro sponsorship and ensuring each trial receives their sponsorship product. Thanks to all the triallers for supporting Dogpro by using and recommending DogPro. Unfortunately the Victorian Arena Championship Trial which was to be held at the Bendigo Wool Show has had to be cancelled due to the ground no longer being available at the wool show event. Hopefully we will be able to find a new location for this trial. The Victorian Field Championship venue has been changed to John Tuddenham’s property at Ross Creek. Many thanks to Neville Williams for making his property available to hold a successful training weekend. These training days are important to help encourage new members and to help those starting out in our sport.
