Organ Scholarship Competition: Repertoire Level Requirements

(adapted from San Diego AGO Scholarship Repertoire Requirements, March 2014)

Students who study on a regular basis generally accomplish each level in one year, but some of the later levels may take two or more years to complete.

The list of repertoire and hymns is merely a guide.

HYMN HYMN LEVEL SUGGESTED REPERTOIRE SELECTIONS TREATMENTS

One pedal per foot. Rhythms may include eighth notes. Easy major and minor key signatures.

Easiest hymns. Introduction and Prep Beginning at the Organ, (Leupold); OR Suzuki Organ Method Vol. 1 (Leupold) 2 stanzas. Christmas Season at the Organ Level 1 (Leupold); Easter and Pentecost Seasons at the Organ Level 1 (Leupold)

One or two pedals per foot. Easy syncopation. Two-part playing.

Basic Organ Repertoire, Level 1 (Leupold) WL60065 Easiest hymns. Introduction and Level 1 Suzuki Organ Method, Vol. 1, 2 (Leupold). 2 stanzas. Some pieces from Easy Hymn Settings, (various Seasons) Burkhardt, Morning Star Music

Key signatures up to three sharps or flats. Sixteenth notes.

Basic Organ Repertoire, Level 2 (Leupold) Easiest hymns. Introduction and Level 2 Suzuki Organ Method, Vol. 3, 4 (Leupold). 2 stanzas. Other selections from Easy Hymn Settings, (various Seasons) Burkhardt, Morning Star Music

More rhythmically challenging, wider leaps in pedal, use of heel and toe. Thicker textures. Easiest hymns. Both feet move across the pedals (not fixed positions). Keys up to 3 flats or sharps. Easy included.
