The American Library in

ANNUAL REPORT 2010

From the Chairman and the Director

The Library’s 90th year of service was a time to celebrate our heritage and look forward to our cen- tennial — most ambitiously by launching a major gifts campaign, the Second Century Fund, to secure the Library’s financial future. By year-end the campaign, in its quiet phase, had secured 40 percent of its target. Meanwhile, the Library grew again in 2010 by every measure of vitality and viability— in members, in transactions, in visits, in programs, in attendance, in partnerships, in donations, in member revenues, and in visibility. Distinguished speakers enlightened evening audiences. Book groups proliferated, drawing more people to experience the joy of reading. Children’s and teen pro- grams surpassed 200 during the year. Database resources expanded to meet growing demand. Schools and universities sought out the Library for institutional memberships. Christopher Buckley delighted gala-goers at the US Ambassador’s residence. A Paris-wide spelling bee brought new read- ers and families to the Library. The electronic newsletter, e-Libris, helped to draw record numbers through the Library’s doors. The Library is ninety years old — and very much alive.
