International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • 1 Interviewer: Peter, Um, Great Expectations- but Did It Meet
Interviewer: Peter, um, Great Expectations- but did it meet yours? Peter: It sort of did and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It was a very decent, robust, competent, workmanlike adaptation and nothing damns it with faint praise more than that (interviewer:not really that good). I thought it was a really likeable attractive piece of work, I really liked Jeremy Evans. When you think how awful he was in War Horse, but that wasn’t really his fault, I thought War Horse was so treacly and this was pretty decent- he is a pretty good lead to play this. I wondered why we were hearing it all again, I mean it’s great, I love it, I can’t get enough of Pip being beastly to Joe Gargery and being snobbish to him and the awful toe-curling embarrassment of all that, just deathless, I can’t get enough of them but why are we seeing it all again, especially as the film seems to be making a bit of a virtue of not having anything radically new to say about it- I don’t think, unless I miss.. Catherine thinks it does. I thought it was good and I’ll sit and watch it perfectly happily, there were some very nice cameo turns in it- Sally Hawkins, who’s just born to be a Dickens player, David Walliams as Mr Pomchook . So I thought it was good but I wondered why we were hearing about it again, what was the point when people like the BBC, with their version of Bleak House , which was so radical and strong, why do this, why do this now? Why do it if you’ve really nothing new to say? Presenter: Catherine, can you answer that question, Mike Newell’s talked about this being his sexy version of Great Expectations- did you feel any of that? Catherine: I didn’t feel sexy, I didn’t feel it was sexy and I didn’t feel sexy watching it, I felt the opposite of sexy.

Written and directed by Olivier Assayas and released in 2014, the film stars Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz. Filmed in Germany, Italy and Switzerland, it tells the story of Maria Enders, a famous actress who reluctantly appears in a revival of the play that made her a star decades earlier; her personal assistant Valentin; and the tabloid fodder Hollywood starlet Jo-Anne. Assayas was challenged by Binoche to “write a really great female role”. He created three. Out of Hours The 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival Starting with a whimper, Opening Night film Breathe In, and ending with a naked plea for funding, perhaps the biggest question posed by the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival, Artistic Director Chris Fujiwara’s sophomore effort, was just how many movies featuring Nazi zombies does a mainstream film festival need? The answer apparently was two, Frankenstein’s Army and Outpost 3: Rise of the Spetsnaz, which for most people is probably two too many. While Richard Raaphorst’s steampunk aesthetic Frankenstein’s Army was at least imaginative and amusing, if slight, the inclusion in the programme of Kieran Parker’s Outpost 3: Rise of the Spetsnaz, the astoundingly inept second sequel to Monsters University.
