January-February 2021 Beijing’S Essential International Family Resource January-February 2021 January-February 2021 Beijing’s essential international family resource January-February 2021 WHAT’S IN A NAME? You may have noticed a slight change in the cover of our magazine this issue: our name has been shortened from beijingkids to simply Jingkids. What is this sorcery, you may ask? Is this a knockoff product produced by pirates? Have we been taken over by some external force? Are we leaving Beijing? Nope, it’s still us, the same beijingkids you’ve come to know and (hopefully) love for a decade and half. The name change is something we’ve anticipated for over a decade, and believe it or not, marks the fourth (!) name we’ve used for this magazine in the 14 years since we published our first product. We produced four of these This lasted for 17 months to great fanfare. We soldiered on with that name until we decided to launch our Chinese edition in 2012, which we named Jing – not the “jing” from the word Beijing (京), but the homonym Jing (菁), which is a component of words such as essence, luxuriant and elite. Since that time, our Chinese brand Jing has grown by leaps and bounds, expanded to Shanghai, and become more and more of a central brand. Though the contents of each magazine are entirely independent, much of what we do – such as our school choice expos and our school choice guides – are joint efforts, and thus it only made sense for us to unify our efforts into one brand. Our commitment to you as Beijing’s Essential International Family Resource remains the same. You can still find us at our URL at www.beijing-kids.com and on WeChat at bjkids, and you can reach us at our same email addresses. Thanks for your continued support! To date, little research on soil pollution in ChinaÕs urban parks has been conducted. To identify the concentrations and sources of heavy metals, and to assess the soil environmental qua- lity, samples were collected from 30 urban parks located in the city of Beijing. Subsequently, the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the samples were analyzed. The investigation revealed that the accumulations of Cu and Pb were read- ily apparent in the soils. The integrated pollution index (IPI) of these four metals ranged from 0.97 to 9.21, with the highest IPI in the densely populated historic center district (HCD). Using multivariate statistic approaches (principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), two factors controlling the heavy metal variability were obtained, which accounted for nearly 80% of the total variance.

The Spiral Bishop Hall Jubilee School, Ma, Gabriel - 13 I sauntered from the ships back to the temporary camp on a beach on Island Fiji. We were on a stopover before crossing the pacific and returning home. Taking my time to enjoy the caliginous sky dotted with sequin-silver, sparkling and shimmering stars, like scattered moon dust in the sky, I sat down, digging my fingertips in the sand. The saltiness in the soft breeze coming from the sea afar brought back some long- forgotten memories... “Arm your weapons!” A deep, coarse command blasted behind us. There we stood on the deck of the main ship, where commander Zheng He was trying to work out a plan to bring down the fast-approaching brigantine before things got worse. But it was too late. The smell of gunpowder struck our nostrils. Then, in a New York minute, there came a ginormous ball, like the one on a flail, imploding down on the deck heavily. A few of the soldiers managed to roll over and avoid it but one, who was not so fortunate, was hit on the leg and started to wince in pain. “Hold your line!” screamed Zheng He, with all his years of frustration printed on his face. We lit the ropes and three of the canons were sent on battle but would never come back. The firefight continued. My ears were aching in pain because of the ear-piercing blasts of the canons, and my hands have blisters all over the fingers frantically adjusting the main sail. I started to lose my concentration.

  • ACE Report for 2010 Date: March 12Th – 13Th Venue: Canadian
ACE Report for 2010 Date: March 12th – 13th Venue: Canadian International School of Hong Kong Meeting opened: 8.30am Friday Meeting closed: 4.00pm Saturday Last years minutes were presented and discussed. Business arising: Communication was again the main issue. We used a wiki last year for much of the earlier information sharing. However, it became clear that some found it difficult to use the communication features of the wiki. As the year progressed I moved most of the information to a regular site and this seemed to work better – however user contribution becomes limited to blog entries. There were many very successful events last year. The energy and commitment of some of the member teachers is outstanding. We want to recognize the achievements of the organizing teachers, schools and most importantly the students through supporting Kate Landau’s request for a brief report being submitted to her soon after the event being concluded. Emailing her with a brief written report and including some photos is probably the best way at the moment. Other solutions will be investigated with in the group to compliment this. Several presentations were made to the group including the outstanding event organized by Shane at Dulwich in the Forbidden City. New event initiatives: Several new ideas for events were muted, offered and discussed. The information relating to these events will be made available in due course. Job a like: Presentations in music and community service took place and were appreciated by all there. Major recommendations: Reduce the number of High school Cultural Conventions to 1 instead of 3 Rationale: many of the events have been cancelled at the last moment.
