  • Langhe Doc Freisa
LANGHE D.O.C FREISA – BRUSAIA "Brusaia", or "burned": so is the land where one of the oldest vines of Piedmont grows, suitable both in clay soils than those marly and for this reason particularly common in the different wine areas of Piedmont. The Langhe Freisa presents ruby red COLOR with violet hues, that foretaste a complex SMELL, winey, fruity, typically even with some hints of vegetables. The TASTE is dry, very tannic and astringent: for its distin- ctive acid component, Freisa is perfect in PAIRING to elabo- rate meals, tasty and fat, such as those of traditional Piedmontese cuisine. ORGANOLEPTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND DESCRIPTION LOCATION OF THE VINEYARDS:: Piemonte - Langhe, Santo Stefano Belbo (CN) METHOD: The vinification of Freisa is the classic red vinifi- cation. The grapes are crushed, de-stemmed and fermented in vats at a controlled temperature (28/30 ° C) for about 7-10 days, depending on the vintage. In this period about 2/3 pum- pingover are made to promote fermentation and its processes. After fermentation, a transfer is made to eliminate the lees, then the wine is aged for about 3 months in stainless steel vats and subsequently put in bottles. COLOR: Dark ruby red, with purple tones. SMELL: Complex aroma, typically fruity, persistent and vinous with some hints of vegetal scents. TASTE: Dry, tannic and astringent. FOOD MATCHING: Once widely used because it matched very well with the old Piedmont cuisine. Because of its high acidity and tannins, it is great to be combined with high-fat meals as it leaves the palate very clean.

  • Tenuta La Pergola
Tenuta La Pergola Country: Italy Region: Piedmont Appellation(s): Monferrato, Cisterna d’Asti Producer: Alessandra Bodda Founded: 1903 Farming: Lutte Raisonnée Website: www.tenutalapergola.it There is a romantic, yet misguided myth among Americans that one can sit down in any roadside trattoria in Italy and be served a delicious glass of wine. However, this idealistic notion is sadly at odds with the hard reality: it is rare enough for the vino della casa to be drinkable, let alone anything truly noteworthy. And yet, this most infrequent occurrence—the wine importer's dream—is exactly what fate would have in store for Kermit and Dixon one day as they trekked the back roads of Piemonte several years ago. The wine in the pitcher—an Arneis from a local producer—was not only drinkable, but it was really quite good: refreshing, balanced, typical of the grape and of the region, and an ideal companion to the antipasti of the day. Oh, and it was cheap. That pitcher of Arneis led them to the cellars of Tenuta La Pergola, in the town of Cisterna d'Asti. Alessandra Bodda now runs the estate her great-grandfather founded in 1903, farming thirty hectares of indigenous Piemontese varieties with the help of her son Emanuele. The sandy and clay soils of the Roero and Monferrato, where their vineyards are situated, give softer wines than the marl-dominated terroirs of the neighboring Langhe, creating aromatic wines that bestow immediate pleasure. Tasting this superb raw material sparked an idea, and with the 2009 vintage the first “Monferrato Rosso – Selected by Kermit Lynch” was born using a blend of the region's red varieties.

Artisanal Cellars artisanalcellars.com [email protected] Crotin “Aris” Freisa d’Asti DOC Winery: Crotin 1897 Category: Wine – Still – Red Grape Variety: Freisa Region: Monferrato/ Piemonte/ Italy Vineyard: Vineyards in Maretto, Villafranca d’Asti and Monale Feature: Organic Product Information Soil: Ancient marine soil with white coral, silt and clay, rich in fossil Elevation: 280 meters (915 feet) Age of vines: 30 years Vinification: Full manual harvest in small boxes. Destemming and crushing. Classic fermentation in stainless steel vats. Duration of maceration is 7-10 days. Aged for 12 months in stainless steel vats and a minimum of 12 months in the bottle before release. Tasting Note: Inky dark ruby color, medium bodied with a balance of licorice and dark fruit notes and a typical varietal intensity balanced by fresh mineral lift. Freisa: An ancient grape variety found in Italy’s northwestern region of Piedmont, particularly around Chieri, the Monferrato, and the Langhe, Freisa is the closest relative to Nebbiolo, aside from Nebbiolo Rosé. Genetic studies show that Freisa and Nebbiolo share a parent-offspring connection and, according to Ian D’Agata, Freisa is more likely Nebbiolo’s parent. This would explain their similarities, from the light ruby hue of their wines, to high tannins and acidity which lend to the wine’s ability to age. Production: 3,000 bottles/ year Alc: 13 % Producer Information The name Crotin 1897 refers to all the years Daniela’s land has been in her family. She met her Calabrian husband in veterinary school--they both practice natural medicine for animals--and their three boys grew up in Calabria, by the sea.
