Agenda 2030 is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity, which seeks to strengthen universal peace and aims to shift the world onto sustainable and resilient pathways. Unlike its precursor, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Agenda 2030 is an all- inclusive and encompassing plan that is made up of 17 sustainable goals, 169 targets, and 241 indicators.

The first 16 goals address priority areas, such as poverty, food security, health, education and gender with added dimensions on economic and environmental sustainability. In addition, SDGs imply that goals and targets are relevant to all governments and emphasizes the balancing of all three SD dimensions, i.e. social, economic growth and environmental protection and, most importantly, the principle of ‘no one’ must be left behind.

Although Namibia has made significant strides in achieving some of the MDGs, the country still faces a number of challenges which Bhata hopes will soon become a thing of the past through the more focused and area-specific SDGs. These are, amongst others high inequality, maternal and infant mortality as well as the lack of basic sanitation in rural areas. Bhata furthermore called upon the media to play its role in many aspects of development, ranging from governance, through to inclusion, empowerment, peace and youth involvement.

“The media enables messages to move further, faster, and to many destinations,” she said.

Students “hustle” for computers in the library

The Coffee Pot tudents at the University of Namibia’s main campus have Sexpressed concern about the shortage of computers in the library arguing that it causes inconveniences and delays.

Fimaneka Kakola, a final-year education student said at times students will even be involved in heated arguments over a computer. She said it is so bad that when a student logs onto to the computer and leaves no matter how briefly someone else takes their place. When they come back and find someone else, this leads to an argument.

Kakola also added that many students use the library computers only to access printing services. She suggested that UNAM should provide a system in which students can access printing service through their personal computers.

A staff member, who preferred anonymity because she is not authorised to speak on behalf the library management, said that UNAM is currently upgrading the library’s physical structure and equipment. “Students should expect more equipment and better services,” the anonymous source said.

According to the Assistant Pro-Vice Chancellor and Director of the Katima Mulilo UNAM Campus, Dr Victor .Kangumu, the increase in the number of students at the campus is due to the fact that many students from other regions and countries applied to the campus this year.

ever thought that the sentiments of rapper Nas when he released the album “Hip Hop is NDead” in 2006 would come to fruition but it seems that it has. I use to be a big fan of hip hop and rap in general, so much so I actively chose to actually pay money for albums instead of just illegally downloading them. To me it was worth it. I remember how I use to buy a rap album and the excitement that came along with it. I would put it in my CD player; yes I still use one, and play it from start to finish. But oh how times have changed. I struggle to recreate that nostalgic feeling within this new landscape of hip hop because to be frank, I’m not a fan of the new era of hip hop and what it has to offer.

What ever happened to lyrics? I honestly can’t make out what any of these new rappers are LOUD MOUTH saying in their songs. An example would be Desiigners with the song “Panda”. It’s all gibberish and melodies with no substance combined with simplistic tap beats. And many of the new rap songs follow the exact same pattern. There is no creativity anymore and everyone sounds like everyone else. There are no standards anymore; you don’t even have to make sense, as long as the bass is loud and catchy, it doesn’t matter.

This drop in standards has resulted in rappers producing what I like to refer to as “fast food music”, maybe you find it catchy at first but after consuming a bit more it starts making you sick and you feel like throwing up. The Internet may also be a contributory factor as there is now more than ever a saturation of this type of repetitive music. No more! Till such a time those standards are raised again, I’ve given up on this new era hip-hop. I’ll either look for another genre to listen to or I’ll just have to stick outdated music of better quality.

Nyoni, a 3rd year public relations and political studies student has dreams of improving the information and publicity office in a different way than ever before. Nyoni who brings with him vast experience in the leadership from being secretary general of the UNAM Zambian society to vice president and now pres- ident of the society says what he feels lacks in the office is more interaction between students and the office.

“Once students have expressed the concerns they have to the SRC office, the SRC never have a platform to give update and feedback to the people if at all the problems are being dealt with or beyond control,” Nyoni said. “And this makes the students think the office holders are not working at all.” He vows to create an interactive AUNTY KNOWS BEST platform and expand the available avenues available at the university to benefit the students in more ways. Nyoni says he finds it hard to swallow the fact that students have to go out in the wild to get internships at radio stations and newspapers while the university has a radio station and a publication that can have them do that within campus. He says his office will be a centre point to work with various offices on information dissemination and aiding easy access to information by stu- dents.

Nyoni whose campaign catch phrase is “why not now” says time has come for the office of information and publicity to reach it potential and give results.
