Dillon (1836-1893) The War of Anti-Christ with the Church and Christian Civilization is a book written in 1885 by an Irishman, George F. Dillon, DD. It was republished by Fr. Denis Fahey in 1950 as Grand Orient Freemasonry Unmasked as the Secret Power Behind Communism. The central theme of the book alleges that atheistic Illuminism, through the infrastructure of Grand Orient freemasonry, driven by the ideology of the philosophies laid the foundations for a large scale, ongoing war against Christendom in general and Catholic Church in particular. The document claims that this had been manifested primarily through manipulating the outbreak of various radical liberal republican revolutions. Particularly those focused on atheism or religious indifferentism in their anti- Catholicism. The book details revolutionary activity in France, Italy, Germany and Ireland. Included within the scope of the book is material on the Illuminati, Kabbalism, Jacobinism, the French Revolution, the Carbonari and Fenianism. The Alta Vendita document was given wider Church and Christian Civilization Church and Christian Civilization exposure in the Anglosphere after being first translated for the book and placed within a historical context. The book was influential to Catholic integralism in Ireland, Britain and the United States, as well as national conservative politics. Fahey who republished the book in the 1950s founded the Maria Duce political movement—critical of Fenianism associating it with Communism, it instead proposed an Irish National Catholicism under the social and spiritual reign of Christ the King. The company who republished it, the Britons Publishing Society, described the book as "of world-wide importance". “Artisans … for Antichrist”: Jews, Radical Catholic Traditionalists, and the Extreme Right Mark Weitzman* The Israeli historian, Israel J. Yuval, recently wrote: The Christian-Jewish debate that started nineteen hundred years ago, in our day came to a conciliatory close. … In one fell swoop, the anti-Jewish position of Christianity became reprehensible and illegitimate. … Ours is thus the first generation of scholars that can and may discuss the Christian-Jewish debate from a certain remove … a post- polemical age.1 This appraisal helped spur Yuval to write his recent controversial book Two Nations in Your Womb: Perceptions of Jews and Christians in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Yuval based his optimistic assessment on the strength of the reforms in Catholicism that stemmed from the adoption by the Second Vatican Council in 1965 of the document known as Nostra Aetate. Nostra Aetate in Michael Phayer’s words, was the “revolution- ary” document that signified “the Catholic church’s reversal of its 2,000 year tradition of antisemitism.”2 Yet recent events in the relationship between Catholics and Jews could well cause one to wonder about the optimism inherent in Yuval’s pronouncement. For, while the established Catholic Church is still officially committed to the teachings of Nostra Aetate, the opponents of that document and of “modernity” in general have continued their fight and appear to have gained, if not a foothold, at least a hearing in the Vatican today. And, since in the view of these radical Catholic traditionalists “[i]nternational Judaism wants to radically defeat Christianity and to be its substitute” using tools like the Free- * Director of Government Affairs, Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.

Our twenty-first century appears to be more and more an age of “digital dependence”. From computers to tablets and smartphones, screens have been invading our daily life, up to the point that it seems that we need them for everything. We must confess that many of us are addicted to this digital culture. For sure, new technologies could be used to access books that are out-of-print or would be difficult to find but, to be honest, few are the people who spend their time reading the complete works of St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas on Kindle! According to a study1 posted on the Pew Research Center website early this year, about a quarter of American adults (24%) say they haven’t read a book in whole or in part in the past year, whether in print, electronic or audio form.

  • Jews and Judaism in the Political Theology of Radical Catholic Traditionalists
Jews and Judaism in the Political Theology of Radical Catholic Traditionalists Mark Weitzman ABSTRACT The controversies over Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson, and earlier over Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ, have given prominence to radical Catholic traditionalists and their growing influence. The recent pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI saw a great investment of political capital seeking reconciliation with the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), yet this effort failed, in great part due to the antisemitism that permeates the Society. Williamson and the Holocaust deniers are often represented as isolated individual representatives of the radical traditionalists, especially after Williamson’s expulsion from the SSPX. In reality it can be argued that the radical traditionalist movement is based upon classical supercessionist theology and that there has often been an effort to cloak this theology from public view. I will trace its roots from Europe to the United States, focusing on Father Charles Coughlin, the “radio priest” whose audience stretched into the millions before World War II; and the Irish priest, Denis Fahey, the theologian most quoted by Coughlin, whose influence continues to be strong in those circles today. I will also survey connections with far right extremists and neo-Nazis and demonstrate the shared Holocaust denial and classical theological antisemitism that link these groups and threatens to negate the gains made since Vatican II that have nurtured the Jewish-Catholic relationship over the past 45 years. Finally, we will assess some of the possible implications of this trend for the future of Jewish-Catholic relations, particularly after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis.

  • Father Coughlin's Broadcasts
GENERAL JEWISH COUNCIL 48S FIFTH AVENUE NEW YORK AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE MURRAY HILL 2-7910 AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS B'NAI B'RITH April 7, 1939 JEWISH LABOR COMMITTEE CONFIDENTIAL You have been selected as the single representative in your commun- ity to receive this letter. We have had inquiries from a number of communities as to the atti- tude of the General Jewish Council in dealing with the issue presented by Father Coughlin's broadcasts. I am writing this letter to convey to you our views on that subject. You will probably want to show the letter to the representatives in your city of the constituent organizations of the Council, but I wish you would keep any discussion of the letter itself as confidential as possible. Several months ago two steps were taken. First, we made arrange- ments to have an address by Frank J. Hogan, former president of the American Bar Association, broadcast immediately after Father Coughlin's talk on the same network, and copies of this speech were distributed. Second, we issued a pamphlet, "Father Coughlin — His Facts and Arguments", exposing the mis- statements in his talks and the Nazi sources from which he drew his material. To date 135,000 copies of this pamphlet have been distributed. Steps have likewise been taken in other directions. During the past four or five weeks the Coughlin talks have been much less anti-Semitic. If this continues, it may not be necessary or advisable to do anything fur- ther in this matter at this time. We feel that it would be inadvisable to have a speaker enter into a debate with Father Coughlin on Sundays over the network he is using.

  • Jewish-Christian/Catholic Relations in the United States
Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations Volume 5 (2010): Athans CP1-24 CONFERENCE PROCEEDING Courtesy, Confrontation, Cooperation: Jewish-Christian/Catholic Relations in the United States Mary Christine Athans, B.V.M., University of St. Thomas (MN) Presented at the John Cardinal Cody Colloquium, Loyola University Chicago, March 16, 2010 The original conference proceeding was expanded into the following article, published in the U.S. Catholic Historian issue on "Ecumenism" (Spring 2010), pp. 107-134. The author is grateful for permission to reprint the article here. Introduction One of my early experiences in Jewish-Christian relations was an exciting venture in Arizona in the 1970s when I served as executive director of a cluster of five Protestant churches, one Catholic church and two synagogues (one Conservative and one Reform), known as the North Phoenix Corporate Ministry. My task was coordinating the interfaith activities of twenty-five priests, ministers and rabbis, and involved lay people from the seven congregations. We developed programs in education, social justice, liturgy and communications and became a model for ecumenical/interfaith groups in the West. We grew in remarkable relationships–many of which continue to this day. I preached my first sermon in a synagogue in 1970–and was known as either ―the Temple nun‖ or ―the synagogue Sister‖ depending on whether I was in the Reform or the Conservative Jewish congregation. Weekly, with very few exceptions, we had wonderful wild clergy luncheons! They consisted of prayer, kosher food, business, theological discussion and a lot of laughter. On one occasion, Rabbi Albert Plotkin announced to the group: ―If Jesus came to Phoenix, Arizona, he would not go to any of your churches! He would come to my synagogue! He was a good Reform rabbi!‖ After a hearty laugh, we all agreed with him.
