The Directors

Brett Benson, Retsey Anderson, Jodene Wartman, Paul Saxton, Amy Jo Cherner, John Ratzlaff Directors’ Notes To our viewers,

We all miss the arts. We miss music. We miss theatre. We miss and cherish the people that make magic on our stages. And boy do we miss an audience. So, we decided to do the very best we could and create a musical (concert style and COVID-19 friendly) for our kids and for our creative souls.

The most difficult part about this adventure wasn’t the COVID restrictions, it was the music itself. The music of Les Misérables is difficult. You need the right voices to pull this off and a strong vocal director. Luckily we had both. Amy Jo Cherner, daughter of the legendary Judy Sagen, was no stranger to our stage. She was Molly in when I was Miss Hannigan and her mother was the vocal director. Therefore, we have come full circle, and I knew she was exactly what we needed to pull this show off. But we also needed a creative staff willing to attempt this show knowing that at any time we may have to shut down.

So onward we went with virtual auditions on September 17. We measured the stage and determined we could only house 36 students safely between the chorus, ensembles, and soloists.

We cast the show, had parents sign COVID RELEASE forms, and set down parameters for rehearsals. We also submitted a COVID rehearsal plan to the District Office which included recommended social distancing, a floor plan given to us by Tech Director, John Ratzlaff, singers who always faced forward, and double masking until the day we filmed.

In late October, COVID numbers started rising quickly. We knew it would only be a matter of time before schools would go online. We moved up our filming date two weeks earlier and then moved it up two days more. This meant that everyone had to kick it up a notch, which created some anxiety amongst the actors, but the directors all believed that we could do it. Costumes were a huge concern during this time but Costume Director, Retsey Anderson came through with all of them, including several changes.

Filming and technical directors approved of this updated schedule. John Ratzlaff got his tech students to build the barricade and a tiered choral space; he enabled students to run the graphics, sound and lighting cues, and he set the microphones and lavaliers levels for the show. Ella Jankey was an excellent Stage Manager selected for this show, and Paul Saxton, our Eagan AM broadcast journalism teacher, trained 2 students to film the show. Paul’s experience with editing, colorization, and sound balance is evident in the artistry of the film.

We did have one casualty due to this hurried schedule; the live orchestra directed by Brett Benson. The student orchestra needed that time to rehearse this amazing score and would not be able to perform all the numbers at the level he knew they could. However, we have included some video of the orchestra performing the opening number, after only a few rehearsals. There is no doubt they would have been beautiful.

Still we prevailed. We worked hard. The students truly became focused, diligent and followed COVID protocols. Our hearts grew with belief and compassion that we needed to make this successful. Finally, the fire within our souls, which has been dark since March, was reignited by our incredible students and their devotion to the performing arts.

Thank you all,

Jodene Wartman and Amy Jo Cherner
