Montreal, September 1, 2015. In their second appearance with Danse Danse, The National Ballet of Canada presents a modern triple bill by three world renowned choreographers. The evening will begin with the second detail by William Forsythe, a work impressive for its dance vocabulary, geometric composition and incredible rhythmic perfection. The second piece, Spectre de la Rose by German choreographer Marco Goecke is a thematic re-imagining of Michel Fokine’s 1911 landmark ballet of the same name. The evening will conclude with Chroma, a work that redefines and expands the horizons of contemporary dance by British choreographer Wayne McGregor. These three unique and powerful works celebrate the athleticism and passion of great dance.

TRANSCENDING THE BODY AND HISTORY

In the second detail, a piece for 14 dancers, choreographer William Forsythe employs contemporary movements of organized chaos, playing with geometric compositions and rhythmic differences. Set to dynamic electronic music by Thom Willems, the piece has retained its power of fascination since it was created on The National Ballet of Canada in 1991. “A wonderful spectacle of impeccable footwork and light, precise port de bras; these are dancers working at their peak, and it was an impressive start to the evening.” (Dance International review of the second detail)

Celebrated for his dark, avant-garde versions of ballet classics, German choreographer Marco Goecke’s re- imagined version of Michel Fokine’s landmark 1911 ballet, Spectre de la Rose, was created in 2009 to mark the centenary of Ballets Russes. It follows the story of a young girl who has just come back from a ball. Falling asleep with a rose in her hands, she dreams of the spirit of the rose, who appears by jumping through her window, dances with her and disappears before she wakes up.

“Impressively original... mysterious, innovative and enthralling” (Channel Rivera, review of Spectre de la Rose)

Following its premiere in 2006 by , Chroma by British choreographer Wayne McGregor garnered three major awards. In 2010, The National Ballet of Canada was the first company outside of The Royal Ballet to perform this thrilling work. Defying the laws of anatomy, McGregor presents a luminous exploration of the architecture of the human body. The music, by British composer , is a unique orchestration of songs by alongside Talbot’s own original compositions.

“A mega-hit... Chroma clearly ranks among the greatest classics of contemporary ballet... Chroma is sleek, sassy, awe-inspiring.” (The Globe and Mail review of Chroma)

THREE EXCEPTIONAL CHOREOGRAPHERS

American choreographer William Forsythe has created more than one hundred works over the past four decades. Artistic Director of the celebrated Ballett Frankfurt from 1984 to 2005, Forsythe is a key figure in contemporary ballet and a source of inspiration for many choreographers.

Renowned for his inventive and exceptional ballets, Goecke attracted attention with his very first work in 2001 and was soon receiving commissions from major companies such as and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.

The recipient of numerous awards and commissions from major international institutions, the brilliant British choreographer Wayne McGregor wowed Danse Danse audiences with his astounding and fascinating pieces, Entity (2011) and FAR (2013). Defying once again the laws of anatomy, his work is a luminous exploration of the architecture of the human body.

A new version of an acrobatic dance-theatre piece on the fierce yet tender relations between two convicts on a quest for love and liberty. An enclosed enclave that is pulsing and poignant, it reflects the cruelty of the world and our own rigid psychological imprisonment.
