Fernandes Assistant Manager of Racing THE HISTORY Since 1959, The Prince of Wales Stakes has been Fort Erie’s premier race. The second jewel in Canada’s Triple Crown of Racing, the Prince of Wales is a glowing centrepiece to The Queen’s Plate and The Breeders’ Stakes, both of which are contested at Woodbine. 2009 Prince of Wales Winner Gallant The Prince of Wales Stakes features Canada’s top three-year-olds at a distance of one mile and three-sixteenths on the main track. The 2002 edition boasted a record purse of $500,000 as Fort Erie based runner Le Cinquieme Essai thrilled the hometown fans with an upset victory. The following season saw Wando capture the half-million dollar event over a muddy main track, en route to his Triple Crown title. Many past Canadian champions have performed at Fort Erie in the classic event. Mr. E.P. Taylor’s New Providence won the first running at Fort Erie in 1959. That year The Canadian Triple Crown was introduced and New Providence won the inaugural series. Four years later, Canebora was hailed a Triple Crown champion. Canebora was also a product of Mr. Taylor’s Windfields Farm. Twenty-six years passed before another Triple Crown champion emerged. Kinghaven Farms’ brilliant grey, With Approval, survived two photo-finishes to win The Plate, then The Prince of Wales, before he cake-walked to victory in The Breeders’ Stakes. Triple Crown winners came in quick succession after With Approval ended the drought. In 1990, another grey from Kinghaven Farms, Izvestia was named the top three-year-old in the country winning the three race series. The most popular winner of The Prince of Wales waltzed to victory in 1991. Super filly Dance Smartly, “kicked sand at the boys”, as she became the first and only lady to win the Canadian Triple Crown. In 1993, the immensely talented Peteski peaked in all three races, followed by Wando’s sweep in 2003. Fans of Orb were surely pleased to see his pilot Joel Rosario find the winner=s circle aboard Pegram, Watson and Weitman=s Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit) in Friday=s GII Black-Eyed Susan S., but they will probably be hoping for a slightly less eventful trip in today=s Preakness. Fiftyshadesofhay was adding blinkers for trainer Bob Baffert, but she showed a new dimension here, settling kindly in sixth of seven while an eager Maracuya (Big Brown) put up honest splits. The NEXT PHASE FOR ORB 2-1 shot began to inch closer as Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable=s Orb (Malibu the field bunched entering the far Moon) faces eight foes as he seeks to keep the racing turn, but three-deep longshot world=s Triple Crown hopes alive in today=s 138th Marathon Lady (Graeme Hall) running of the GI Preakness S. looked like she would be tough Fiftyshadesofhay (outside) Little has gone wrong for the to collar as she swept up to Horsephotos homebred in 2013, with four challenge for command. But Rosario Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}) in the quickly yanked Fiftyshadesofgray back to the outside GI Kentucky Derby (video).

$400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.
