ABSTRACT Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894- ), President of More­ house College from 1940 to 1967, active civil rights advocate, and member of the Atlanta School Board since 1969, helped in focusing attention on the need for im­ plementing social change in the structure of American society. Initially Mays spoke from the church pulpit but as his popularity as a public speaker increased in the Fifties and Sixties, he spoke at many colleges and uni­ versities to advance his plea for social change. Hence, this study reports, describes and evaluates the ceremonial speaking of Mays from 1954 to 1975. It focuses specif­ ically upon six commencement addresses and three eulogies. Serving as a background for the analysis of Mays speaking, chapters include information about his early family life, his education, his speech training, and his professional career. The rhetorical analysis of the nine selected speeches takes into account the speaker, his speech, his audience, and the occasion. Finally, an appraisal is made of the man and his effectiveness as a ceremonial speaker. Mays was always eager to give an address so that he v Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. could dramatize the plight of the needy and subsequently set into motion his pleas for social change. In his speeches he attempted to discuss the major social problems in the United States. Mays pled for peace among nations, aid for the impoverished, harmony between races, and justice for the oppressed. In the same way Mays was responsive in accepting speaking engagements, his early speech training disciplined him to be equally as earnest in the preparation and delivery of his speeches. His ministerial training pre­ pared him to speak to diverse listeners. Mays preferred a formal speech structure to assure clarity of ideas; and he appealed mainly to self-esteem, ethnocentrism, and fair play to achieve his goals. These appeals to the conscience resulted in a speaking popularity desired by many black speakers. Mays was effective in speaking to audiences on sensi­ tive social issues at a time when discussion created bitter opposition. In short, Mays was popular because of his ability to identify with his cause and because of his experience and authority in dealing truthfully and unselfishly with the prevailing social issues of the day. Mays, retired president of Morehouse College of Atlanta, Georgia, has becomed recognized as a significant spokesman for the black community. He has spoken often and has written much about the problems of integration and equal rights. His long and distinguished speaking career deserves study and analysis.^

    RACE, REGION, AND REALISM IN THE POSTBELLUM FICTION OF ALBION TOURGÉE, CHARLES CHESNUTT, GEORGE WASHINGTON CABLE, AND MARK TWAIN by KATHERINE BROWN BARROW (Under the Direction of James Nagel) ABSTRACT In the literary movements of Regionalism and Realism that emerged in the wake of the Civil War, Albion Tourgée (1838-1905), Mark Twain (1835-1910), George Washington Cable (1844-1925), and Charles Chesnutt (1858-1932) contributed to the growing field of Southern fiction within these traditions. With varying degrees of verisimilitude, romance, and satire, all four of these authors placed issues of race and nationhood at the thematic center of their most influential novels. In many of their postbellum works of fiction, such as The Grandissimes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Pudd’nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins, A Fool’s Errand, Bricks without Straw, Mandy Oxendine, The Conjure Woman, The House Behind the Cedars, and The Marrow of Tradition, they explored the persisting racial problems of American life in the last quarter of the nineteenth-century and developed themes that suggested that the nation was still mired in the problems of its past. Perhaps the most significant aspect their postwar novels share is the manner in which they present African American protagonists who actively pursue a better life for themselves by challenging the white patriarchal order. Through various methods of empowerment, such as verbal trickery, escaping slavery, passing into white life, educational and economic advancement, as well as the subversive acts of protest, violence, and revenge, these characters refuse to submit to the social hierarchy to which they are bound by either custom or law.

Crowther, Adams State University, USA Keith Harper, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, USA This paper explores the race and religion during the Progressive Era by examining the relationships between Richard Henry Boyd and Elias Camp Morris, two leading members of the nascent National Baptist Convention, an African American denomination, and Boyd’s relationship with James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the white Southern Baptist Convention. Their interactions highlight the contours and limitations of ecclesiastical activity within and across the color line in the early 20th Century. Keywords: National Baptist Convention, race, African-Americans On February 2, 1916, Richard Henry Boyd, the African American publishing dynamo and entrepreneur, sent a twelve page epistle to James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Sunday School Board, the nascent, but soon-to-be mammoth publishing arm of white missionary Baptists in the South. The professional form of the missive only superficially masked the emotion and message of what Boyd revealed to his white counterpart. The National Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest organization of African American Baptists, was in the throes of schism. In writing this letter, Boyd engaged in a ―heart to heart talk‖ with Frost ―over this matter,‖ whereby he offered his version of recent events (Boyd, February 2, 1916).
