Despite the massive family size — around 1,000 OR genes in the mouse genome and 400 in human, each sensory neuron randomly expresses one, and only one, OR. This phenomenon, termed the “one- neuron-one-receptor” rule, underlies both odor sensing in the nose and the formation of an odor map in the brain. However, it remains a mystery how this rule is established. Combining theoretical modeling, single-cell transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, and single-cell 3D genome structures, we investigated the regulation of OR genes during neuronal development.

This dissertation elaborates on our efforts in both developing novel imaging modalities based on detection of optical absorption and applying high-sensitivity fluorescence microscopy to the study of biology. Although fluorescence is the most widely used optical contrast mechanism in biological studies because of its background-free detection, many intracellular molecules are intrinsically non-fluorescent and difficult to label without disturbing their natural functions.

2013 NIH Common Fund Single Cell Analysis Investigators Meeting Where: Residence Inn, Bethesda, Maryland When: April 15-16, 2013 The NIH Common Fund held a Single Cell Analysis Investigators Meeting on April 15-16, 2013 in Bethesda, Maryland. This year’s meeting objectives are to: • Disseminate current research findings in single cell analysis. • Convene the funded SCAP investigative teams to update the community on their research progress, problems, and new opportunities in single cell analysis. • Identify roadblocks and emerging challenges in the understanding of single cell level heterogeneity. • Consider current conceptual, technical, and/or methodological challenges in single cell analysis and brainstorm possible solutions. • Discuss major themes in basic and/or clinical research for which additional focus on single cell analysis may provide the most significant and broadest impact. • Determine major biomedical research opportunities that can be addressed by single cell analysis. • Discuss how relevant groundbreaking technologies and approaches in SCA can be disseminated to the research community. • Facilitate new research collaborations between funded grantees and others interested in entering the Single Cell Analysis field. • Build synergy between the Single Cell Analysis Program and other projects funded by NIH. The meeting incorporated presentations by 5 invited keynote speakers and 15 funded investigators, 28 poster presentations, and 13 lightning talks, and yielded opportunities to review progress, collaborate, and brainstorm novel ideas. Over 160 participants attended this year’s meeting, with representatives in academia (55%), government (30%), industry (10%), and nonprofits (5%). Almost one-third of attendees were funded investigators and collaborators, while 21% were postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Five scientific sessions were held.

the university of texas at austin spring 1999 CHEMICALCompositionschemistry & biochemistry departmental newsletter “Breakthroughs in Ultraspectroscopy & Ultramicroscopy” Conference celebrates opening of laboratory for spectroscopic imaging (LSI) On April 23, in the Flawn Academic Center, a scientific conference was held in recognition of the opening of the Laboratory for Spectroscopic Imaging LSI (http://www.cm.utexas.edu/~barbara/) in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The conference featured talks by leading researchers in the area of spectroscopy, photochemistry and/or microscopy including: Marye Anne Fox (North Carolina University – Raleigh), Mostafa El-Sayed (Georgia Institute of Technology), Xiaoliang Sunney Xie (Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory and Harvard University) and Frans De Schryver (KULeuven, Belgium). The LSI is a state-of-the-art research facility for laser spectroscopy. The focus of LSI is the study of basic physical and biophysical chemical problems with ultrafast spectroscopy and ultra-microscopy. The LSI is both a user facility and the major research laboratories of the research group of Paul (standing l-r) Xiaoliang Sunny Xie, Hiroshi Masuhara, Frans De Schryver, Barbara, who joined our faculty in the fall. The laboratory contains state-of- Don O’Connor (seated l-r) Larry Faulkner, Mary Anne Fox, the-art research instrumentation including femtosecond and picosecond Mostafa El-Sayed, Paul Barbara spectrometers, various scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy apparatuses (NSOM,AFM,STM), and two single molecule spectroscopy instruments. One main thrust in the LSI is the use of femtosecond spectroscopy to investigate intermolecular and intramolecular atomic motions during ultrafast chemical processes in solution. Some of the processes under investigation include the relaxation dynamics of the hydrated electron, intermolecular electron transfer in metal-metal-mixed valence complexes, and the conformational structure and dynamics of RNA-protein complexes.

The Optoelectronics Global Conference (OGC) was created to pave the way connecting optoelectronic academia and industry as well as connecting China and the rest of the world. 2018 the 3rd Optoelectronics Global Conference will be held concurrently with the 20th China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE) in Shenzhen. The conference aims to promote interaction and exchange of various disciplines among professionals in academia and industry at home and abroad.
