  • Saleem Yousuf (Pakistan 1982 to 1990)
Saleem Yousuf (Pakistan 1982 to 1990) Pakistan hosted the West Indies in 1986-87. Expecting a gruelling Test series, Imran Khan wanted known fighters in his team. Zulqarnain had kept wicket in Pakistan’s previous Test series against Sri Lanka and in the following One Day International (ODI) tournaments. Anil Dilpat was wicketkeeper in the first of two three-day tour games and in an ODI against the West Indies in October 1986. For the second three-day game, just a week before the opening Test, Imran brought in Saleem Yousuf and retained him for the series. Afterwards Imran felt his choice was vindicated: “In Salim Yousuf, Pakistan had found a courageous player and one who could handle a crisis.” When Pakistan toured the West Indies later in 1987-88, Saleem, despite a broken nose from being hit in the face in the first innings, came in at No. 9 in the second and played a vital innings of 28, adding 51 runs, to help set West Indies a testing score at Bridgetown. Wasim Akram considered Saleem “not the tidiest keeper, but he’s one of the bravest batsman I’ve ever seen.” Saleem Yousuf contributed much to Pakistan’s rise to the summit in Test cricket from 1986. Successes against West Indies, and series wins over India, England (twice), Australia and New Zealand meant that when Pakistan and the West Indies met in late 1990 the series was regarded as the unofficial world championship. Saleem played only in the first Test in that 1990 series, finishing his Test career by helping Pakistan take the lead.

  • Political Unrest in Ladakh Buddhist’S Main
Political unrest in Ladakh Buddhist’s main victims Some radical elements within LUTF may take advantage of the situation and give new dimension to the dormant sentiment in the mind of Ladakhi Buddhists. Clearly Leh is heading for more turbulence in the coming days. By G L Jalali Ladakh is the remotest part of J&K state, mostly inhabited by the Budhists who have close religious and cultural affinity with the Tibetan Buddhists situated at the highest altitude, Ladakh is generally called the “Roof of the World”. It is surrounded on all sides by rugged mountains which cut it off from the rest of the country. Its total area is about 32,000 square miles and total population is about two lakhs, majority of whom are the Buddhists. During Muslim rule, a good number of Ladakhi Buddhists were forcibly converted to Islam. So, at present a large number of these neo-converted Muslims live in Ladakh and Kargil districts. Kargil, which was part of Ladakh district, was separated to constitute a predominantly Shia district for political reasons in early seventies. Ladakh, on all counts, is the most backward part of India where majority of the Ladakh Buddhists earn their livelihood by raring Yaks and cultivating a kind of barley known as “Grim” in their fields. They mostly remain engrossed in religion and performing religious rituals. Their life remains centered round monasteries called Gompas. Their art and learning is concentrated in the Gompas which remain under the control of a local Lama who is both religious and temporal head of the local people.

Security forces rushed to the air- port when the Boeing 737-800 touched down on the pop- ular island, after the pilot reported the Brisbane to Bali flight had been hijacked, Indonesian authorities said. However, Virgin Australia said the drunken passenger had sparked a false alarm when he banged on the cockpit door. Indonesian police later arrested Matt Christopher Lockley, an Australian national. “This is no hijacking, this is a miscommunication,” said Heru Sudjatmiko, a Virgin Australia official in Bali. “What happened was there was a drunk person... too much alcohol consumption caused him to act aggressively.”“Based on the report I received, the passenger tried to enter the cockpit, through the cockpit door, by banging on the door.” He said the man was stopped by crew, handcuffed and placed in a seat at the back of the plane, which was carry- ing 137 passengers and seven crewmembers. After landing the passenger, who was unarmed, was taken off the air- craft and detained. Officials said he did not try to resist arrest.
