There was a golden period in the 1980s when Pakistan had shocked the world by having excelled in the Bermuda Bowl and the Rosenblum Cup. The Pakistan outfit comprising of Nishat Abedi, Nisar Ahmed, Munir Ataullah, Jan-e-Alam Fazli, Zia Mahmood and Masood Saleem had created a sensation by ending as the runner-up in the Bermuda Bowl, regarded as the most important open world championship, staged at New York City, USA, in 1981. Pakistan then came up with another stunning performance by having secured second place in the 1986 Rosenblum Cup, the open world championship in even- number non-Olympic years. We have produced quite a few world class bridge players who have earned laurels from time to time. We have played host to some of the most memorable international events, having attracted the top performers. With our various initiatives, we have tried to lay solid infrastructure for bridge in Pakistan. We have remained grateful to the media fraternity for having provided us the kind of coverage we looked for during the course of international competitions. Syed Khalid Mahmood’s contribution in promoting bridge deserves special mention and due recognition. Because of him many untold stories of bridge have seen the light of the day. We hold him in high esteem and acknowledge his services to bridge in particular. Nawab Muhammad Yousuf Talpur President, Pakistan Bridge Federation Karachi. January 22, 2011 What a shame that the get-together on the evening of January 18 at Karachi Gymkhana was manipulated and exploited in such a horrible manner. A handful of cricket journalists and writers were invited verbally for an exchange of views over dinner. The proceedings, lasting an hour or so, were conducted formally and there were relevant speeches to raise the issue of bringing back international cricket to Pakistan. Every speaker, that included Arif Ali Khan Abbasi, Wasim Akram and Iqbal Qasim, had welcomed the idea of sharing views but there was no mention of any group or association getting formed there and not a single announcement to this effect was made during the meeting. The subsequent announcement through a press release that a Cricket Writers (Journalists) Association was launched with an aim to serve the game loved by millions in Pakistan, has come as

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: WOMEn’s SPORT IN IRAN Islamic women’s sport appears to be a contradiction in terms - at least this is what many in the West believe. … In this respect the portrayal of the development and the current situation of women’s sports in Iran is illuminating for a variety of reasons. It demonstrates both the opportunities and the limits of women in a country in which Islam and sport are not contradictions.1 – Gertrud Pfister – As the London 2012 Olympics approached, issues of women athletes from Muslim majority countries were splashed across the headlines. When the Iranian women’s football team was disqualified from an Olympic qualifying match because their hejab did not conform to the uniform code, Small Media began researching the history, structure and representation of women’s sport in Iran. THIS ZINE PROVIDES A glimpsE INto THE sitUatioN OF womEN’S spoRts IN IRAN AND IRANIAN womEN atHLETES. We feature the Iranian sportswomen who competed in the London 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, and explore how the western media addresses the topic of Muslim women athletes. Of course, we had to ground their stories in context, and before exploring the contemporary situation, we give an overview of women’s sport in Iran in the pre- and post- revolution eras. The NatWest Series 2001 CONTENTS Saturday23June 2 Match review – Australia v England 6 Regulations, umpires & 2002 fixtures 3&4 Final preview – Australia v Pakistan 7 2000 NatWest Series results & One day Final act of a 5 2001 fixtures, results & averages records thrilling series AUSTRALIA and Pakistan are both in superb form as they prepare to bring the curtain down on an eventful tournament having both won their last group games. Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory.

  • Australia Firmly in Control in First New Zealand Test
SPORTS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2016 Replay drama works in Australia’s favor WELLINGTON: Australia’s players feared another backlash from New Zealand fans after a contentious no ball decision went in their favor in the final over of the first day’s play of the first test yesterday. Adam Voges was batting on seven when he was bowled by Doug Bracewell with two deliveries remaining in the day’s play, only for umpire Richard Illingworth to signal a no ball. Television replays, however, showed the delivery was legal but because the no ball had been called New Zealand were unable to ask for a review. Australia finished the day on 147 for three, 36 runs behind New Zealand’s first innings tally of 183. The replay had the potential to create a backlash against the Australians similar to that they experienced after the final one- day international at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Monday. In that match, Mitchell Marsh was given not out caught and bowled on 41 with his side in charge of their run chase, only for the crowd to erupt into a chorus of boos when they saw a replay on the big screen that showed he had been dismissed. Marsh was then given out, creating an angry response from the all- rounder and batting partner Matthew Wade, while captain Steve Smith was booed at the end of the game when he questioned the decision. Australian media criticized the Hamilton crowd, calling them ‘feral’, while suggesting the controversy from the underarm bowling incident from a 1981 one-day match between the two sides had now been put to bed.
