Our Readers Write We need to hold judges, parole boards accountable In 1981 I left a job I loved and wanted a ca- reer in to then start my current landscaping business (40 years ago next year). I was a 27 year old Peel Cop. I loved my job but hated how messed up our judicial system was and still is. The catch & release issues, the punishment never fitting the crime and the system worrying about the rights of the ‘bad guys’ more than the vic- tims. And that was 40 years ago. Today Brampton’s Mayor Patrick Brown and Peel’s current Chief Nishan Duraiappah sound just like I did 40 years ago. How sad is that. And now yet another poor, innocent vic- tim, Darian Henderson-Bellman, has died. Darian’s poor grandparents are saying the 27 year old’s ex boyfriend, who shot & killed her, would still be in jail if Covid-19 wasn’t here. I am not sure that he would have been. If you look at how many times he breached the conditions of his parole in the last 12 months, you could see he was not paying at- tention and was getting more violent. If only someone was paying more attention. So Mr. Brown, while you are lobbying the federal government, here are my thoughts from the cheap seats - when a judge or parole board is considering releasing a prisoner or granting bail, put a lot of own- ership and responsibility on that board or judge that, if the individual they’re releasing doesn’t follow the conditions of the release and commits a crime, that board or judge will be someone responsible for the crimes, just like the judicial system has done with bartenders who over serve a patron who then gets behind the wheel. It is just this simple, if anyone cared or was paying attention that is. But so long as the judges and parole board members are untouchable, things will never change. So Mr. Brown, make us proud. Make the difference we all so want to see happen.
