And to Anna with love. 3 Abstract Principally this thesis will deal with defining, accounting for, and examining, the relationship between the theological and the political in Dante's use of prophecy. It will be demonstrated that it is an over-riding feature of Dante’s thought in both the Monarchia and the Commedia that the only remedy against cupidity, and the damage it does to the world, is ecclesiastical poverty combined with imperial power. This thesis will show that much of the urgency and passion with which Dante communicates his political and social message in the Commedia, which seems to advocate both ecclesiastical poverty and imperial power as prerequisites for the ideal human society, is through his use of prophecy and of prophetic language. This project explores the multiple experiences of theology in Florence in the period 1280-1300, when Dante tells us that he engaged in theological study, and examines the ways in which Dante, in the Commedia and elsewhere, responds to those experiences. The project therefore casts light on the ways in which medieval theology was mediated and experienced within a specific historical and geographical context, paying close attention to its effects upon different publics; in doing so, it seeks to re-evaluate a key dimension of a fundamental work of world literature, a work which is increasingly recognised not only as being foundational within the European literary tradition, but also as a distinctive and unique theological voice in its own right. This thesis aims to place Dante’s use of prophetic practice and language within its contemporary context and to demonstrate that Dante’s use of prophecy, and the adoption of the role of poet- prophet, are key points at which the theological and the political come together in the Commedia. Principally this thesis will deal with defining, accounting for, and examining, the relationship between the theological and the political in Dante’s use of prophecy. This chapter will define the wider aims and themes of the thesis. To do so it provides an overview of Dante’s use of prophecy with a view to summarising the status quaestionis and outlining the contribution that this thesis hopes to make to furthering the debate around these issues. I will consider the issue of the dating of Dante’s works and its implications for the interpretation of those passages that might be termed ‘prophetic’. This chapter will provide a number of working hypotheses which will serve as starting points for the discussion in the rest of the thesis. 1.2 Dante and Prophecy Dante’s adoption of the role of prophet, his use of the language of biblical prophecy, and his assumption of prophetic authority in his works has been the subject of extensive critical attention.1 Throughout the Commedia, Dante makes frequent use of statements which predict the future although as will be made clear this is not necessarily the only, or even principal, characteristic of prophetic speech. The action of the poem is set during Easter 1300, but Dante did not begin writing the poem until several years after this date. Setting the poem in the recent past allows the author to present historical facts as prophecies, the predictions of Dante’s exile by Farinata in Inferno X, by Brunetto Latini in Inferno XV, and by Cacciaguida in Paradiso XV all fall into this category. For example Cacciaguida predicts Dante’s exile from Florence: Qual si partio Ipolito d’Atene per la spietata e perfida noverca, tal di Fiorenza partir ti convene. (Par. I, 105), the DXV (Purg. XXXIII, 43), and the providential reform promised by St Peter in Paradiso (Par. XXVII, 61-63). My thesis is not does not seek to provide definitive answers to these most heavily debated interpretative cruxes but will seek to contextualise them within the intellectual and political milieu in which they were created. I suggest that the ambiguity of these ante eventum prophecies may well be deliberate on Dante’s part and that this ambiguity serves not only to make the prophecies proof against obsolescence but also to better integrate them into a wider prophetic programme of post and ante eventum prophecies with the demonstrable veracity of the former giving credence to the latter. These prophecies also play an important role in Dante’s own identification of himself as author-prophet and the assertions of authority which this role entails. In this chapter I wish to define the status quaestionis, with regard to the likely meanings of these prophecies, as these are related to Dante’s ideas regarding the nature and function of human society and thus to one of the Commedia’s main political themes, which will form the basis for my discussion of the relationship between the political and the theological in Dante.

Various aspects of the question of religious syncretism in the Middle East have repeatedly been the subject of research. Seen from an ‘orientalist’ and idealistic point of view, this question has been dealt with by national historiographies in a predictably justifi catory fashion. Moreover, after the end of the Cold War era, it resurfaced, integrated into wider questions such as that of the politicisa- tion of religion or that of the emergence of “ethnic-identities”, an issue which has recently engulfed the institutions of the European Union. In the current enfl amed situation, the historian has diffi culty in detaching himself/herself from the crucial present debate on religion/culture and confl icts (dictated as an almost exclusive approach and topic of research according to the lines of the ‘clash of civilizations’ theory). Often encountering retrospective and anachronistic interpretations, (s)he needs to revisit, among other issues, the question of the religious orthodoxies and of the deviances from them. Th e collective work presented here is, in short, an attempt to explore respective phenomena in their own historical terms.     The Study of the Fundamentals of Martin Luther’s Theology in the Light of Ecumenism 1 Tuomo Mannermaa Translated and edited by Kirsi Stjerna It is not unusual in the history of academic disciplines that new ideas concerning the fundamentals of a particular discipline emerge either by accident or as a result of impulses from another field of scholarship. This is the case also in today’s Luther research. Two particular fields can be named from most recent history, fields with significant impulses for new insights: ecumenism and philosophy. The philosophical impulses are connected with the task of locating Luther’s theology in regard to both scholasticism, which preceded Luther, and the philosophy of the modern times, which succeeded him. Ecumenism presents its own challenges for Luther research and Lutheran theological tradition. It is the latter issue that I wish to address here, touching upon the issues related to philosophy only as far as it is helpful in light of ecumenical questions at stake. The ecumenical impulses originate, above all, from two sources: Lutheran–Orthodox theological discussions, on the one hand, and Lutheran–Catholic theological encounters, on the other. The challenge issued to Luther research by Lutheran–Orthodox discussions lies in the theme “Luther and the doctrine of divinization,” whereas Lutheran–Catholic cooperation in Luther research has set out to clarify the theme, “Luther as a theologian of love.” Especially the late Catholic Luther specialist Peter Manns has unraveled the latter topic wit h his fruitful Luther interpretation. The first of these two topics, “Luther and theosis (divinization),” is fundamental in the sense that it gives expression to the patristic standard of comparison that all these three denominations share and that can serve as a starting point in their process toward a common understanding.

    Heretical Networks between East and West: The Case of the Fraticelli NICKIPHOROS I. TSOUGARAKIS Abstract: This article explores the links between the Franciscan heresy of the Fraticelli and the Latin territories of Greece, between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. It argues that the early involvement of Franciscan dissidents, like Angelo Clareno, with the lands of Latin Romania played an important role in the development of the Franciscan movement of dissent, on the one hand by allowing its enemies to associate them with the disobedient Greek Church and on the other by establishing safe havens where the dissidents were relatively safe from the persecution of the Inquisition and whence they were also able to send missionaries back to Italy to revive the movement there. In doing so, the article reviews all the known information about Fraticelli communities in Greece, and discovers two hitherto unknown references, proving that the sect continued to exist in Greece during the Ottoman period, thus outlasting the Fraticelli communities of Italy.     The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER CANDOR LUCIS AETERNAE OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS ON THE SEVENTH CENTENARY OF THE DEATH OF DANTE ALIGHIERI SPLENDOUR OF LIGHT ETERNAL, the Word of God became flesh from the Virgin Mary when, to the message of the angel, she responded: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord” (cf. Lk 1:38). The liturgical feast that celebrates this ineffable mystery held a special place in the life and work of the supreme poet Dante Alighieri, a prophet of hope and a witness to the innate yearning for the infinite present in the human heart. On this Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, I readily add my voice to the great chorus of those who honour his memory in the year marking the seventh centenary of his death. In Florence, which reckoned time ab Incarnatione, 25 March was the first day of the calendar year. Because of its closeness to the spring equinox and the Church’s celebration of the paschal mysteries, the feast of the Annunciation was likewise associated with the creation of the world and the dawn of the new creation through the redemption won by Christ on the cross. It thus invites us to contemplate, in light of the Word made flesh, the loving plan that is the heart and inspiration of Dante’s most famous work, the Divine Comedy, in whose final canto Saint Bernard celebrates the event of the incarnation in the memorable verses: “Within thy womb rekindled was the love, By heat of which in the eternal peace After such wise this flower has germinated” (Par.

    Issue 70: Dante's Guide to Heaven and Hell Dante and the Divine Comedy: Did You Know? What a famous painting suggests about Dante's life, legend, and legacy. Big Man in the Cosmos A giant in the world of which he wrote, laurel-crowned Dante stands holding his Divine Comedy open to the first lines: "Midway this way of life we're bound upon, / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / Where the right road was wholly lost and gone." Of course, his copy reads in Italian. Dante was the first major writer in Christendom to pen lofty literature in everyday language rather than in formal Latin. Coming 'Round the Mountain Behind Dante sits multi-tiered Mount Purgatory. An angel guards the gate, which stands atop three steps: white marble for confession, cracked black stone for contrition, and red porphyry for Christ's blood sacrifice. With his sword, the angel marks each penitent's forehead with seven p's (from Latin peccatum, "sin") for the Seven Deadly Sins. When these wounds are washed away by penance, the soul may enter earthly paradise at the mountain's summit. Starry Heights In Paradiso, the third section of the Comedy, Dante visits the planets and constellations where blessed souls dwell. The celestial spheres look vague in this painting, but Dante had great interest in astronomy. One of his astronomical references still puzzles scholars. He notes "four stars, the same / The first men saw, and since, no living eye" (Purgatorio, I.23-24), apparently in reference to the Southern Cross. But that constellation was last visible at Dante's latitude (thanks to the earth's wobbly axis) in 3000 B.C., and no one else wrote about it in Europe until after Amerigo Vespucci's voyage in 1501.

HE Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas presents clearly and distinctly a complete summation of Catholic doctrine. To Dante is due its transmutation into immortal verse, however without loss of doctrinal content. "Were all the libraries in the world destroyed and the Sacred Scriptures with them, the whole system of doctrine and morals might be almost reconstructed out of the Divina C mmnedia" .1 Dante has been called the "Poetic Thomas Aquinas." It is a source of wonder how St. Thomas covered so vast a field of learning in so short a span of life; it is equally wonderful how Dante converted his doctrine into golden poetry. The Summa and the Commedia almost go hand in hand. The subject matter in numerous places is the same. In one we have a subject treated with the clear, precise, philosophical exactness of the Angelic Doctor, in the other the same subject caught up in poetic fancy and presented in an imaginative form that loses nothing of its depth by being converted into high poetry. The chief dogmas of the Catholic Faith are to be found in Dante. Their expression often is so similar to the treatment given them by Aquinas that one may well imagine that there was but one author for both expositions. It is thus fitting that Dante, in his attempt to write what he believed to be the greatest allegory ever created, chose Virgil to be his literary and narrative guide. Dante pulls from what Prue Shaw, a prominent Dante critic, calls the “fertilising powers” of Virgil’s allegorical and pastoral influences throughout The Divine Comedy (172).
