Medical Officer, Passenger Services, BEA/BOAC, Air Corporations Joint Medical Service, London Airport Hounslow CIVIL AVIATION has grown steadily and rapidly since the end of the war. London Airport is now handling more than a million passengers a month, and the handling of the disabled and invalid passenger is now a major problem. The image and convenience offlying have changed greatly over this period, and modern air travel is now extremely well organized and comfortable. The basic physiological cabin environment, however, is not greatly changed since the days when flying was still an adven- ture. For economic reasons, commercial airlines are unable to provide a great deal in the way of specialized arrangements for invalids who must, therefore, fit in with scheduled routine services. An airline which catered exclusively for invalids at the expense of other passen- gers would soon be out of business. The type of invalid who travels is a typical cross-section of the sick in the community, the majority being elderly and suffering from degenerative diseases. Airlines probably have an even higher share of the elderly, because flying is still relatively expensive. Invalids who travel can be classified roughly into two groups, those who are self-declared in advance of the flight and can have special arrangements made for them, and those who collapse en route, who have either concealed their illness, or were previously healthy. It has been found that, in BOAC and BEA, slightly less than one per cent of passengers declare themselves to be invalids while making their bookings. -

Abstract Established in 1948, the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) was the first joint command in the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and became a critical first step toward promoting jointness in the United States military. Combining air transport personnel and assets of the United States Air Force and the United States Navy into a single command, the tone in the MATS establishment sharply contrasted with the intense interservice rivalry within the United States military during the late 1940s and early 1950s. At the same time that generals, admirals, and government officials battled over roles, missions, and other resources for their respective services in Washington D.C., MATS proved its effectiveness as a joint command by completing several demanding airlifts—from saving the city of Berlin from a Soviet blockade to establishing the United States’ northernmost air base in the Arctic Circle. Nevertheless, as the importance of strategic airlift for the United States military grew, old problems of rivalry between the Air Force and the Navy and a battle in Congress with the Air Transport Association of America drove MATS toward reorganization into the Air Force’s Military Airlift Command (MAC) in 1966. -

ALPA’s Economic A and Financial Analysis (E&FA) Department dissected, by the numbers, the last 10 years of the airline industry, putting together a compelling story of inflation, consolidation, and even growth. Putting It in Perspective During the last decade, the average cost of a dozen large Grade A eggs jumped from 91 cents to $1.66, an increase of 82.4 percent. Yet the Air Transport Association (ATA) reports that the average domestic round-trip ticket cost just $1.81 more in 2010 than at the turn of the decade—$316.27 as compared to $314.46 in 2001 (excluding taxes). That’s an increase of just 0.6 percent more. -
