St.Paul's McKinnon JFC Newsletter From the Secretary June 28 2018 What a brilliant weekend for footy, with AFL footy visits, photos & celebrations. Auskick Our Auskickers were brilliant to kick off the weekend. With more than 120 kids for Grandparents and Special Friends Day, the boys and girls had a ball playing against their special person/s that came to help each of the coaches teach some of the fundamentals for our next generation of Demons. Michelle and the team are fantastic giving guidance on how to play and giving each of the kids a game at the end of the session. It is a sight to see the kids and the parents all get behind the song and give our song the gusto to set the weekend of sport. Seniors Saturday morning and the thirds were on fire to kick off our seniors footy with 11.15-81 against Endeavour Hills 6.5-41. The Reserves then backed up the day with a very good game of fast, dramatic footy kicking 20.11-131 to Chelsea Heights 6.5-41. The Reserves lead the Div 1 Reserves Ladder leading into this week’s home game (McKinnon Reserve) on Saturday at Midday against Bentleigh. Our seniors Div 1 team then finished off the Saturday events to see St Pauls kick 17.16-118 to Chelsea 5.6-36. This secured St Paul’s into 3rd position and heading into a clash against Bentleigh on Saturday this week at 2.15pm. Please feel free to come on down to the ground to watch our boys in action.

VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.

TAC Cup Round 2 TAC Cup Girls Round 3 1 - 2 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Perkins a lesson in persistence Not much knocks the AFL men’s competition off the front page of the paper, especially during the opening round of the season. But the NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final did just that on the weekend, with premier Adelaide – featuring Eastern Devils Swisse VFL Women’s draft ee Sarah Perkins – recognised on the front page of The Age with the headline ‘Making HerStory’. With close to 100 VFL Women’s players draft ed into the AFL this season, just one now has the title of premiership player, with Perkins to be congratulated on being part of the successful Crows outfit. Perkins is a great example to up-and-coming female and male players, having been overlooked at the women’s draft but making the most of the late lifeline thrown to her by Adelaide to live out her AFL dream. The TAC Cup regularly provides over 50 per cent of the talent to the AFL at draft time, but it is only a small percentage of players from the competition that are draft ed. Each weekend almost 300 players take to the field representing their region, with double that amount on TAC Cup lists. While it is the elite talent that is oft en focused on in the competition, we should also recognise the role our clubs play in developing future Peter Jackson VFL and local players. The skills learnt at this level are taken back into the community, as the players become leaders from the education and training provided in the TAC Cup.

The dedicated round highlights the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcomes new communities to embrace Australian Football as fans, players, umpires and administrators. Across Victoria, there are a number of fantastic multicultural and indigenous programs which continue to bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life together. Programs including Laguntas, Kickstart, Multicultural School Programs, Towards Zero Diversity Squads and the All Nations high-performance team are enabling young talent to be identified and have access to more opportunities to become the next crop of AFL stars. One way AFL Victoria is connecting these programs to the talent pathway is via our VFL Multicultural Ambassadors, who are assisting with these participation opportunities in the community. The VFL competition this year boasts nine Multicultural Ambassadors, including former AFL Multicultural Ambassador Ahmed Saad – now at Coburg – along with James El Moussalli (Essendon), Kenny Ong (Sandringham), Michael Tang (Port Melbourne), Jack Johnstone (Williamstown), Emmanual Jakwot, Cory Machaya (Casey Scorpions), Josh Porter and Brad Xavier (Werribee).

VFL Round 3 TAC Cup Round 5 28 - 30 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Room for all VFL club models The team landscape in the Peter Jackson VFL will change in 2018 with the announcement during the week that Werribee and North Melbourne both intend to field standalone sides in the competition next season. The VFL will continue to foster a number of diff erent team models that suit the various clubs involved, from standalone VFL and AFL clubs to strong AFL/VFL club alignments. AFL Victoria will work with both clubs throughout the year to help them with the transition to standalone status for next season, ending a 10-year alignment between the clubs. The change of alignment will provide positives for both. With the decision made early in the 2017 season, both clubs now have time to prepare from an on and off -field perspective for the upcoming 2018 season and going standalone. In the case of North Melbourne, they see it as the best model for the development of its players and to meet its strategic objectives, along with off ering a number of top-up positions on their list. Werribee will now be able to off er 23 VFL senior-listed positions each week in its side, expanding its ability to provide a host of up-and-coming talent in Victoria an opportunity to play VFL football. They will be hoping to discover the next Ben Brown or Kyle Hartigan, who have both progressed through the Werribee program in recent years. As we have seen over a number of years, alignments change and the VFL continues to evolve.
