Evolutionary Patterns and Consequences of Developmental Mode in Cenozoic Gastropods from Southeastern Australia
Evolutionary patterns and consequences of developmental mode in Cenozoic gastropods from southeastern Australia Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Kirstie Rae Thomson September 2013 ABSTRACT Gastropods, like many other marine invertebrates undergo a two-stage life cycle. As the adult body plan results in narrow environmental tolerances and restricted mobility, the optimum opportunity for dispersal occurs during the initial larval phase. Dispersal is considered to be a major influence on the evolutionary trends of different larval strategies. Three larval strategies are recognised in this research: planktotrophy, lecithotrophy and direct development. Planktotrophic larvae are able to feed and swim in the plankton resulting in the greatest dispersal potential. Lecithotrophic larvae have a reduced planktic period and are considered to have more restricted dispersal. The planktic period is absent in direct developing larvae and therefore dispersal potential in these taxa is extremely limited. Each of these larval strategies can be confidently inferred from the shells of fossil gastropods and the evolutionary trends associated with modes of development can be examined using both phylogenetic and non-phylogenetic techniques. This research uses Cenozoic gastropods from southeastern Australia to examine evolutionary trends associated with larval mode. To ensure the species used in analyses are distinct and correctly assigned, a taxonomic review of the six families included in this study was undertaken. The families included in this study were the Volutidae, Nassariidae, Raphitomidae, Borsoniidae, Mangeliidae and Turridae. Phylogenetic analyses were used to examine the relationships between taxa and to determine the order and timing of changes in larval mode throughout the Cenozoic. -

During the years i960 to 1964 a major reorganization of the molluscan collection of the Department of Living Invertebrates of the American Museum of Natural History was undertaken under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. The valuable work done in this period indicated the desirability of preparing a catalog of the Recent mollus¬ can .jjucxiuuiis held by the museum. While most of the type specimens had been separated from the main collection for a number of years, an attempt was made to complete this segregation. Many specimens not previously recognized as types were transferred to the type repository and this paper is a preliminary attempt to catalog and evaluate the specimens now held separately in this repository. Much of the museum's collection consists of historically important material from old collections in which the identification of type specimens is often difficult and uncertain. The concept and importance of a type was sometimes improperly understood by early collectors and misconceptions later arose from their incorrect and inadequate labels. -

NEMOURIA Occasional Papers of the Delaware Museum of Natural History NUMBER 36 JULY 30, 1991 ANNOTATED CATALOG OF TYPE SPECIMENS IN THE MALACOLOGICAL COLLECTION OF THE DELAWARE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. GASTROPODA (PROSOBRANCHIA AND OPISTHOBRANCHIA) Rudiger BielerI,2 and Alison Bradford 1 ABSTRACT. A brief outline of the history and sources of the malacological collection at the Delaware Museum of Natural History is given. All type material (as defined by ICZN Article 72) was separated from the main collection. This paper reviews and lists the type holdings of Recent prosobranch and opisthobranch gastropods. The type status of each specimen was studied by comparison with the original publications. A total of 191 type lots of 160 species-group taxa from 65 authors is recognized; 5 5 of these are holotypes or syn type lots. The majority of name-bearing types consists of marine caenogastropod prosobranchs. An anno tated list of all type lots as well as an author index are given. The list of references contains all papers in which the taxa are first described and also other major publications based on the collection. INTRODUCTION The malacological collection of the Delaware Museum of Natural History (DMNH) with currently about 190,000 catalogued lots is one of the largest of its kind in the country. In 1982, then containing 135,000 catalogued lots, it was ranked eighth in size among the U.S. collections in a survey by Thompson (1982: 44). A revision of the Tertiary Volutidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) of south- eastern Australia. Memoirs of the Museum of Victoria 49: 195-307. The Volutidae of Australia consists of 18 genera or subgenera of which five are known only as fossils and three only in the living fauna. (Twenty other genus group taxa have been syn- onymised.) The fossil genera can be grouped according to their affinity as: Cosmopolitan: Lyria (Late Oligocene-Recent), Athleta (Late Paleocene) and Scaphella (Aurinia) (Late Eocene). Endemic (the dominant element): Livonia (Late Oligocene-Recent), Ericusa (Late Oligo- cene-Recent), Nannamoria (Late Oligocene-Recent) and Amoria (Middle Miocene-Recent). Neozelandic: Alcithoe (Alcithoe) (Late Miocene, Late Pliocene), Alcithoe (Waihaoia) (Late Eocene-Middle Miocene). Indo-Pacific or Tethyan: Cymbiola (Late Oligocene-Recent), Mitreoia (Late Eocene) and Lep- loscapha (Middle Miocene, Recent). The living volutes of the Southern Australian region are almost entirely derived from the Southern Australian Tertiary volute fauna. During a reconnaissance of the Tertiary formations in the western Vogelkop in 1929/1930 for the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, The Hague, the geologists J.P. Roothaan and J.B. Woolley collected a number of fossil molluscs in the outcrop area of the Klasaman Formation, later to be dated as 'Late Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene' on the basis of foraminiferal studies carried out in the course of a 25 years' search for oil (1935-1960), by the Nederlandsche Nieuw Guinea Petroleum Maatschappij. In 1930, Dr K. Martin made a preliminary examination of the fossils, which in recent years were restudied by the present writer, the number of species identified thereby being raised from 16 to 35. Unfortunately, an attempt to determine the ages of at least the two largest faunules (numbering merely 20 and 16 species respectively, both deriving from the upper part of the Klasaman Formation), more precisely than in Martin's time, failed to give satisfactory results, making it abundantly clear that much more material is needed before one can say more about the ages of these assemblages than that they are 'Miocene/Pliocene', and 'possibly Pliocene'. Palaeontologically however, the fauna is quite interesting. Seven new forms are described, viz., Zoila caputavisensis, Volutoconus hargreavesi aridus, 'Barbatia sorongensis, Arcopsis caputavisensis, Glycymeris caputavisensis, Carditella caputavisensis, and Cardiocardita oostinghi, an eighth, Galeodea papuana, having been described as far back as 1943. -
