By the mid-1990s, lo-fi had become something of a genre of rock music, associated with bands such as Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided By Voices and The Grifters. The recordings of the musicians associated with lo-fi were considered by the discourse around them to have a degree of sonic and technical »imperfection« that indexed and authenticated its less commercial origin and ethos, and which was thus not just tolerated but received positively (see e.g. Diehl 1994). But the term lo-fi and the positive reception of technical or technologi- cal imperfections in recordings both extend beyond the 1990s category of lo-fi, and can be observed as a recurring theme in twentieth-century coun- tercultural popular musics, spanning folk, punk, indie and even electronic music, and it has its origins in long-term traditions of Romanticism and realism. -
Guided by Voices Bee Thousand Rar
Guided by voices bee thousand rar Continue I must admit that mentioning The Thousand Bee in another Guided Voices review album can get frustrating. But Bee Thousand is an important album in the history of Guided By Voices. This was done in a period of very consistently large entries. Bee Thousand, thanks to many early supporters of GBV (Chavez, Breeders, etc.), has created a huge buzz around the indie world. Finally managed by the voices moved out of Ohio's AOEs, and into the main distribution. Alien Lanes is a sequel to Bee Thousand, and although it is similar to this album, it is much better. It has essentially the same pop/experimental ratio as Bee Thousand, but pop and experimantal on Alien Lanes are just higher quality. Alien Lanes is more focused, better executed, and beautifully produced (compared to anything that preceeded it). The quality of songwriting is incredible. Game of Jabs, Motor Away, Watch Me Jumpstart, Salty Salute, Closer You, My Valley Hunting Knife, Striped White Jet, and My Son Cool are just great Bob Pollard songs. Little Whirlwind, Good Flying Bird and Straw Dogs are tobin's three best songs. Experimental songs on Alien Lanes are also very good, as they are used to keep the album amazing listener. Synchronization in 16 seconds is a great pop fragment of Cigarette Tricks, but unfortunately this leads to a terrible pimple zoo. I apologize to everyone who loves this song, but it's really awful (maybe they should have released it on the Nightwalker album). But the good news is that it only lasts 40 seconds, and the rest of the album (all 27 songs) is remarkable. -
