2 LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 11:1-10

On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water covers the sea. On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 125 (126):1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6 James D. Wetzel (b. 1987)

O God, with your judgment endow the king, For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,

and with your justice, the king’s son; and the afflicted when he has no one to

he shall govern your people with justice help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and

and your afflicted ones with judgment. the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.

Justice shall flower in his days, and May his name be blessed forever; profound peace, till the moon be no more. as long as the sun his name shall remain. May he rule from sea to sea, and In him shall all the tribes from the River to the ends of the earth. of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. 3 SECOND READING Romans 15:4-9

Brothers and sisters: Whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I say that Christ became a minister of the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, to confirm the promises to the patriarchs, but so that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles and sing praises to your name.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Luke 3:4, 6 Chant, mode viii

ALLELUIA Psalm 121 (122):1 (at 12:00 Noon) Chant, mode i

V. Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi: V. I rejoiced when it was said unto me:

in domum Domine ibimus. we shall go into the house of the Lord.

Alleluia. Alleluia.

4 GOSPEL Matthew 3:1-12

John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Be pleased, O Lord, with our humble prayers and offerings, and, since we have no merits to plead our cause, come, we pray, to our rescue with the protection of your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PREFACE

8 It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.

For he assumed at his first coming the lowliness of human flesh, and so fulfilled the design you formed long ago, and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, that, when he comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest, we who watch for that day may inherit the great promise in which now we dare to hope.

And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim:

MUSIC NOTES

Giovanni Pierluigi, born in the town of Palestrina near Rome, began his musical life as a chorister in the choir of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in 1537. Palestrina’s first published book of Masses was so well received by Pope Julius III that he was named maestro di cappella of the Julian Chapel of St. Peter’s Basilca in 1551. He held similar positions elsewhere in Rome, including at St. John Lateran (where he succeeded Orlando di Lasso) and St. Mary Major before returning to St. Peter’s in 1571. Palestrina composed at least 105 settings of the Mass, nearly 400 motets, and countless other choral works, many of which were published in his lifetime. As the most famous and influential Renaissance composer, his style is considered the definitive example of ‘correct’ vocal writing, a technical mastery which earned him the moniker ‘Prince of Music.’

Deus tu convertens is taken from the collection Offertoria totius anni secundum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae consuetudinem published in 1593. It contains sixty-eight five-voice settings of the Offertory Antiphons for all Sundays and major feasts of the . In this set, Palestrina uses melodies of his own creation instead of taking the chant as his musical starting point. Even in comparison to other works of Palestrina’s, these motets are conservative in their construction, especially in his treatment of dissonances. Just as the collection is thematically ordered according to the liturgical year, it is musically ordered according to the ascending church modes. This system of modality, originally applied to chant and similar to our modern notion of major and minor scales, was applied to polyphonic music by 16th century theorists Heinrich Glarean and Gioseffo Zarlino. Deus tu convertens, is in the first mode – Dorian – since it is toward the beginning of the collection.

Choral music at next Sunday’s Solemn Mass for the Third (Gaudete) Sunday of Advent: Josef Rheinberger’s Messe in G, Op. 151, ‘Sanctae crucis’, Benedixisti Domine, Op. 176, No. 7, and Qui sedes, Op. 176, No. 6. Parish Vespers continues this Sunday at 5:30 PM in the choir stalls at St. Vincent Ferrer. The 2019-2020 Music List, Music as Holy Preaching, is available in the narthex and online. This booklet contains a list of this season’s concerts and repertoire for all choral services as well as information about the St. Cecilia Guild, our Friends of Music program that financially supports music in the Parish.
