What happens when a collection of social misfits and outcasts with horrible lives and psychic powers discover each other and in the process discover that they're part of a unified whole? That's the basic premise of one of the books that's considered a classic of science fiction. It's hard reading at the start, because the lives of some of these characters are truly horrific, but about fifty pages in it started to grab me and pull me along for the ride. The ride, though, wandered through some pretty heavy-handed psychology, and the tail end of the book headed off into more preaching than I liked, leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth by the time I finished it. This is actually a collection of three novellas, and the second two are better than the first. Endings in all three of them are a problem, though. Psychology is treated with an eager earnestness in many places that doesn't age well. More Than Human has a feel about it similar to other stories I've read from the era where science fiction was fascinated by psychology and psychiatry. While these stories are never soulless, the breakthroughs in struggles with inner demons described here end up feeling too scientific, stark, and antiseptic for me. Too much terminology mixed in with the showing, too pat resolutions of serious mental breakdowns without lingering after-effects. The analogies and parallels shown between the human body and mind and the collection of main characters are well done, though, and by the middle of the book I really did care about the characters and what happened to them. It's not boring, and well worth polishing off in a night. It's worth reading as a classic, but as a great story of growth out of alienation, it just didn't connect with me. The second section of the book was originally considered a classic as a stand-alone novelette, but I found the first section even stronger. I liked the symmetry of the idea that we all have telepathic powers at birth, but lose them as we learn to communicate verbally with others. Thus, such abilities are never exposed, since those who retain their psi abilities are necessarily the persons who cannot relate to the rest of society. For the most part Sturgeon did an effective job of weaving a complete novel out of three distinct novelettes, but there were times when the book did seem somewhat disjointed. I found the switch from first person to third at the beginning of part two a bit jarring, and I thought the beginning of the third part was paced too slowly in comparison to the preceding sections. However, Sturgeon pulled the third section together nicely with a look at ethics and morality in the modern world that remains fascinating even after nearly fifty years. His novels are The Dreaming Jewels (1950, also called The Synthetic Man (1957)), More Than Human (fixup, 1953), The Cosmic Rape (1958), Venus Plus X (1960), and Godbody (1986). Sturgeon's short fiction collections are Without Sorcery (1948, also called Not Without Sorcery (1961)), E Pluribus Unicorn (1953), A Way Home (1955), Caviar (1955), A Touch of Strange (1958), Aliens 4 (1959), Beyond (1960), Sturgeon in Orbit (1964), Baby is Three &. And My Fear is Great (1965), The Joyous Invasions (1965), Starshine (1966), Sturgeon is Alive and Well. (1971), The Worlds of Theodore Sturgeon (1972), Case and the Dreamer (1974), The Stars are the Styx (1979), The Golden Helix (1979), Alien Cargo (1984), To Marry Medusa (1987), and A Touch of Sturgeon (1987). Some of Your Blood (1961) is a non-SF study of a blood drinking psychotic. More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon. Continuing on my list for Vintage Science Fiction Month, I read Theodore Sturgeon’s 1953 novel, More Than Human . This was my introduction to Sturgeon’s work, and I’m in awe of his accomplishment. From the beginning, it’s clear you’re in the hands of a master. Forget genre, this is just great fiction writing. Aside from a few serious reservations, which I’ll get to in a minute, More Than Human is a riveting story told through three interwoven novellas, “The Fabulous Idiot”, “Baby is Three” (this was the first written) and “Morality”. Together these three segments describe different phases of the emergence of a new life form, Homo Gestalt. This consists of a group of humans with extraordinary powers: a strange “baby” who is the brain, a strong man whose limited mind comes to include extraordinary powers when linked to the “brain”, teleporting twins who can retrieve anything the group needs to survive, and a young girl capable of telekinesis who is the vital link to the brain and who communicates baby’s insights and instructions to the others. I love all sorts of stories about collective minds, but More Than Human is one of the few in which all members of the group have equally necessary roles. They are like parts of a single body, yet, as it emerges in the third section (and that makes you look back closely over the first two) they lack a critical part of their functioning, a conscience. But I can’t summarize the elements of the story without pointing to the destructively dated language. It’s obvious in the title of the first section, The Fabulous Idiot. Look, I know he was writing in the early 1950s, and it was common to refer to neurodiverse people as idiots, defectives, mongoloids, lunatics, crazy people and worse. I’ve been a mental health blogger at Storied Mind since 2007, and I can’t stand to read this sort of thing, much as I admire the beauty and power of Sturgeon’s writing. Nor can I ignore the use of “colored people”, “Negroes” and the N-word, even though these are mostly used by pretty monstrous characters you have to hate. Sturgeon’s narrative is in many ways a repudiation of these prejudices, and for his time that was definitely a good thing. But still the language grates and offends. So does the peculiar position of women characters. Yes, several of them have insight and in some cases extraordinary powers, but they mostly serve to support men and help them recover so they can set the world right.

Even today, there are well-regarded writers in that genre, of great literary stature, who are due for a wider audience. In the case of Theodore Sturgeon, I am certain that, once a follower of his work, there is no turning back. What “More Than Human” achieves is nothing less than to inspire the reader. Its very purpose is to do just that.The case is made, in a dazzling way, in favor of humanity. All of humanity, in one form or another, is brought up for your consideration.     THEODORE STURGEON LUNACON’72 GUEST OF HONOR Theodore Sturgeon has been selected by the N.Y. Science Fiction Society and the Lunacon ’72 committee to be this year's guest-of-honor. This follows a long list of awards and accolades that have come Mr. Sturgeon's way. Ted Sturgeon won a HUGO at last year's world convention in Boston, the Noreascon, for his brilliant short story, Slow Sculpture. His stories have won recognition by the Science Fiction Writers of America by being nominated for the Nebula Award. He is one of the few writers to receive consistent recognition for his high writing standards by fellow writers .and by his reading public. Since the Hugo Awards were instituted in 1961, he has received nomination for five different stories out of a published output of only about 20 stories appearing in science fiction magazines, a remarkably high recentage. In 1954 he received the Inter­ national Fantasy Award for his novel 'More Than Human'. Ted Sturgeon was born in 1918 in New York City. He has had a variety of jobs. He has been a short-order cook, power- shovel operator, and advertising promotion man. He has worked for Time and Fortune, spent three years In the Merchant Marine (in which he holds five ratings), trained for six years to be a circus aerialist, and has managed a luxury resort hotel in the British West Indies. He Is currently living in California where most of his writing is for the film 1ndus try. Mr. Sturgeon has apoeared in every major science-fiction magazine since his first stories in the pre-war Issues of Astounding Science Fiction and Unknown.
