CODE KEY: 1. It’s Simply a Good Thing B - BABYSITTING, CPR - CPR CERT., FAC - FIRST AID CERT., RCC - RED CROSS CERT., Like everyone else in the world, you probably hate it when people are SS - SAFE SITTER, SL - SWIM LESSONS, PP - PET/PLANT SITTER, P - PET CARE rude to you, especially for no apparent reason. Being kind to people, ONLY, H - HOUSE CARE, L - LAWN CARE, C- CAR CARE/DETAILING, T - TUTORING regardless of if you know the person or not, is something that is humane and respectable. Even if you claim to “hate people” you should at least try to be nice to someone every day. Random acts of kindness are some of the most contagious things in the world. Think about it: You hold the door for someone, they’ll hold the door for someone else and so on. How about when you hear of people at a drive-through paying for the customer who is behind them which causes them to pay for the next TEENAGE JOB SEEKER’S LIST customer? Chain reactions are real and kindness is super influential! MAY NOT BE VIEWED ONLINE AVAILABLE IN 2. You’ll make Friends PRINTED NEWSLETTERS ONLY Everyone in the world deserves a friend, so what better way to gain a friend than by showing someone what an awesome, kind human you are? Kind- ness is free, plentiful and highly effective, so literally ANYONE can be kind. Still not sold? Think about this: Would you rather be friends with someone who helps you when you drop your books or someone who merely looks at you scrambling to pick up what you’ve dropped? On top of this, consider the fact that you’re having a bad day already. Wouldn’t you want someone to just stop and help you? Of course you would. Be that person!

3. You Never Know Who You’re Inspiring I know that there is someone for everyone to inspire. That being said, why would you want to inspire someone to project negativity? While you may not know who they’re inspiring or haven’t met the person yet, there will come a day when someone comes into your life and admires everything about you. To the voluntary jerks who are reading this: get a grip. Everyone can be a decent human being for at least five minutes per day. Besides, once you invest your five minutes of being kind to someone it’s almost hard to stop. Kindness exists in all parts of the world, so why not treat it as a universal ordeal?

4. It’ll Make You Feel Good Why do I say it’s hard to stop being kind after you start? because be- ing kind makes you feel good! I know that feeling good isn’t always TOP TECH HOLIDAY GIFTS easy. His son, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, proved less benevolent: Ancient sources recount that he outlawed the Jewish religion and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. When Matthathias died in 166 B.C., his son Judah, known as Judah Maccabee (“the Hammer”), took the helm; within two years the Jews had successfully driven the Syrians out of Jerusalem, relying largely on guerilla warfare tactics. Judah called on his followers to cleanse the Second Temple, rebuild its altar and light its menorah-the gold cande- labrum whose seven branches represented knowledge and creation and were meant to be kept burning every night.

THE HANUKKAH “MIRACLE” According to the Talmud, one of Judaism’s most central texts, Judah Mac- cabee and the other Jews who took part in the rededication of the Second Temple witnessed what they believed to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous event inspired the Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight-day festival. (The first Book of the Maccabees tells another version of the story, describing an eight-day celebration that followed the rededication but making no reference to the miracle of the oil.)

OTHER INTERPRETATIONS OF THE HANUKKAH STORY Some modern historians offer a radically different interpretation of the Hanukkah tale. In their view, Jerusalem under Antiochus IV had erupted into civil war between two camps of Jews: those who had assimilated The Memory Tree into the dominant culture that surrounded them, adopting Greek and Where your memories are preserved for years to come Syrian customs; and those who were determined to impose Jewish laws and traditions, even if by force.
