Nercwys News

June 2009 Issue 20

I don‟t watch much television but a few months ago, a programme about two of our great prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone was transmitted. It proved to be very interesting (doubly so because of our local connection with Mr. Gladstone at ). It is claimed that they loathed each other and they fought tooth and nail from 1852 when Disraeli was, for a short time, Chancellor of the Exchequer (and a bad one at that!) and Gladstone‟s speech in reply to Disraeli‟s budget, helped to bring Disraeli‟s party down. (Does this all sound familiar?) They became leaders of their respective parties and until 1880 they regularly alternated in power and both proved as successful when in opposition as when in power. I suspect that the country benefitted from their animosity because both were always having to be aware of what the other was doing and saying and complacency and greed never crept in. Some would argue that this era marked the high point of British politics and apart from the odd charismatic and effective leader since, there has been an inexorable decline in the quality, standards and morals of our elected politicians, both at local and at national level ever since. Why is this? Certainly the Victorian Age produced more than its fair share of gifted, loquacious, energetic and adventurous leaders, who weren‟t afraid to take risks and at the same time, probably owned up to their mistakes when found out by effective opposition parties and they didn‟t hide behind inane excuses. That average has now swung the other way and for some time, we have been „blessed‟ with some extremely mediocre as well as blatantly corrupt politicians who claim to represent the electorate. The quaint idea was that when someone entered office, whether at local or at national level, they did so because they felt that they had something to offer. Now, the perception is that many seem only to want to „milk‟ the system for what they can. Allowances, bonuses, perks, expenses, call them what you want, have always been abused if given half a chance and the current hiatus over parliamentary allowances has long been preceded by the question of local government expenses which has rumbled on for years without any effective resolution. I can remember the Chester Ratepayers Action Group being formed, probably in the late 70s, to campaign on this very issue. Perhaps we copy the attitudes of our elected representatives (or vice versa) as the Action Group never enjoyed much success. So do we deserve the politicians we have now? Well, yes (why would they be elected otherwise!), but what do you think? Some comments have been made about the inclusion of „News from Westminster‟ in the Nercwys News. Whatever your political views, everyone is affected by the laws, Acts and Directives emanating from Westminster and Brussels and there should be some interest in them. Yes, there is a fine dividing line between „Party politics‟ and factual reporting and some time is spent deciding if the articles are suitable, but I am sure that everyone will realise which is which and take what you want from the articles. Some of the articles request feedback - if you feel strongly about what has been written, then why not reply? Contact details are always provided. Peter Addiscott 2

NADRA NEWS THE FUTURE It is said that the young look forward and the old reminisce. I can’t vouch for the former because it is too long ago to remember but I do indulge occasionally in the latter! We all appreciate what Ray Davies has done for Nercwys in the past with his large collections of photographs, stories, tales and memorabilia and it is noticeable how popular the albums are when they are put on display. After a discussion with Ray, at a recent committee meeting it was agreed that NADRA would try to carry on Ray’s good work. Ray says that he stopped in about 1990, but of course we do have a history of the village up to the year 2000 through the excellent Millennium book. Although the Nercwys News does give quite a lot of information about what is going on, there is so much that cannot be included, is not submitted or is not pertinent and it would be a shame if this information is lost for future generations. Initially we thought that we would concentrate on events that have taken place since 2000, so if you think that you might have something that you consider would be of interest for our ‘archives’, please let us know. Addresses are on the back cover and my telephone number is under ‘Village Organisations’. One plea, though. If submitting copies of photos of people or of scenes that are about to change, please remember to provide full captions, as one hundred years hence, there won’t be many of us around to provide the names! As this is new for us, although obviously following on from Ray’s idea, we are still thinking about the future format of these ‘archives’. There will be the normal photograph albums and document folders, as they would always be popular at meetings and ‘get-togethers’ and we are considering putting some of the items on the internet, probably on our village website. However, let’s see how much material is provided, first. Following on from this, a suggestion has been made that people coming to our AGM might like to bring something, a photo or a document of 3

whatever age, pertinent to Nercwys, so that it can go on display during the evening. That might give us some idea of what might be available. AGM Our AGM will be held in the Soar Chapel School Room on Thursday, 11th of June, starting at 7.30pm. After refreshments and a raffle, Chris Bradshaw will give a talk on his time at Rolls Royce, which should prove to be extremely interesting. BUS SERVICES Many of you will have received the NADRA flyer referring to the proposed cuts in our bus service. We hope that as many as possible have written to the County Council with their comments, but we do not know if and when the decision will be made. MEMBERSHIP Membership subscriptions for NADRA is now due and a membership form is included within this issue. We have kept the subscriptions at our 1981 level for another year, £1 each or 50p for a Senior Citizen. Your help keeps the Nercwys News going, as well as enabling us to try to respond to any problems that occasionally affect us. I should point out, so as to resolve any confusion, we are entirely separate from the Nercwys Community Council (NCC). The NCC is our statutory local government body and consists of elected Council- lors, whereas NADRA is a non-profit making independent organisation, with a constitution based on the Charity Commission model and has a committee elected at each AGM. As stated before, we welcome everyone at our AGM and talk and hope that you will consider joining us on the committee. Will we see you there? TRADE DIRECTORY The inclusion of the Trade Directory in the last issue did generate some extra business for at least one of the enterprises mentioned, so I am pleased that this has been beneficial. Since the list was compiled, another new service has been started and this is now included as a flier. Depending on feedback and interest, there may be another opportunity to provide a Directory next year. WALK Finally, an evening walk in Coed Nercwys / Nercwys Forest will take place on Wednesday, 3rd of June, meeting at the north car park (by Woodlands Cottage) at 9pm. The aim is to see and hear the Nightjars and any other wildlife that might like to show off. Peter Addiscott

LIMERICK

There are not many budding poets in Nercwys so I am very grateful that Mrs. Mabel Rogers supplied us with one. Here is her entry: There was a young man from Nercwys, He thought he lived in a circus, Went down to the White on a Saturday night, My gosh he could drink, but thought it was milk! And sadly he’s now out of focus. 4

Y CAPEL Trist yw cyhoeddi marwolaeth Elisabeth ar ol brywdro‟n ddewr drwy ei salwch. Roedd Elisabeth yn un oedd pawb yn troi ati i‟ch cynghori ar y iaith Gymraeg neu unrhwy beth i wneud gyda‟r teulu. Ysgrifennodd dau lyfr oedd i wneud a Chapel Nercwys sef Hyd Yma ac atodiad i‟r llyfr – Yma o Hyd ac a gyhoeddwyd yn 2003. Yn wreiddiol merch o Llŷn oedd Elisabeth ac fe ddaeth a chymraeg Llŷn gyda hi. Mae‟r tair ferch yn siarad yr iaith yn glaer iawn, un o‟r merched wedi dysgu Groeg i‟w phant! Diolch amdanni ac fe fydd colled fawr am Elisabeth yn ein gwasanaethau. Ein cydymdeimlad dwysaf a Meinir, Nia a Haf yn eu colled fawr. Hefyd mae teulu Trefrwd wedi cael colled sef Peter. Roedd Peter yn un o aelodau‟r Ysgol Sul ac rydym yn cydymdeimlad a‟r teulu. Mae Gwilym yn yr Ysbyty yn Wrecsam ac rydym yn gobeithio y bydd gwellhad buan ac y bydd adref yn fuan iawn. ‘Bosom Buddies’ – One Year On! Just over a year ago, we (Rhiannon, Louise, Hester & Malcolm) took part in the Playtex London Moonwalk, along with 17,000 other women and men. We are delighted to announce that we completed the 26.2 miles around the streets of London wearing our decorated bras (see photo!) raising awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. Our aim was to raise £2000.00 for the Walk The Walk charity and to cross the finish line together, within 8 hours. We succeeded on both counts! We excelled even our own expectations by crossing the finish line in just under 7 hours and our total fundraising was £3000.00. So… we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsored and supported us. It was an incredible experience for us all, a wonderful opportunity to support a very worthwhile and deserving cause whilst at the same time reaching newfound levels of fitness! The story doesn‟t end here though…as now we‟ve got a taste for more!!!!!!! On Saturday May 30th, Rhiannon, Hester and I will be taking part in our next challenge, ‘The Yorkshire Dales 3 Peaks’. We‟ll be setting off at the crack of dawn in the hope of completing the 26mile walk within 12 hours. Our chosen charity this year is the North West Cancer Research Fund. We‟re aware that there are many good and worthy causes to contribute towards and it‟s impossible to help them all. However, we hope that you‟ll feel the NWCRF is deserving of your support. As members of the Mold Branch committee, Rhiannon and Louise are always proud to tell supporters that more than 90p of every pound they donate goes directly towards funding research. Anyone wishing to sponsor us can do so by contacting, Louise Edwards of Hendre Foilen, Ffordd Y Pentre, Nercwys or by visiting the fundraising webpage: www.justgiving.com/louiseedwards3peaks Look out for follow up article in the near future and news, no doubt, of next year‟s challenge!! NERCWYS COMMUNITY HALL Following the Public Meeting on 12th January, 2009 the committee has continued to meet. We held a St David‟s Dinner fund raising event at the White Lion and raised £170 for our funds. It was a very enjoyable evening, with good food, but frankly it was the same lovely group of people that usually attend such functions. The support promised at the Public Meeting has not come up to proof. On a more positive note the Lease for the land has now been approved by the Flintshire County Council Strategy Group - it now lies with their legal department. The next meeting of our Committee will be on Monday, 1st June at 7pm in the White Lion. It will start PROMPTLY at 7pm and only last one hour [I promise]. If you want a village hall – get involved and do something. The AGM will be on Monday, 29th June, same time, same venue. Brighten the Place Up? Would anyone like to buy some daffodils? £25 for a one kilo sack [about 500 bulbs] – buy one get one free. Orders and money to me by 24th June, 2009. Delivery early Autumn. Profits will go to the Village Hall Committee.

UPDATE ON OWL (ONLINE WATCH LINK)

Since we started utilising OWL here at Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Assn. office last year we have found that it has far exceeded our high expectations. We were astounded at how quickly OWL sends messages to people. For instance, the first alert sent via telephone, mobile phone, fax and e mail, Direct Path Solutions were able to tell me exactly who was picking up the telephone and receiving the message. Within a very short space of time (approximately 20 minutes after the message went out) we received a confirmation report to say that 45% of messages had been delivered, including 40 which had been left on answerphones. A short time later it was confirmed that 78% of messages had been delivered by telephone with 131 messages left on answerphones. This figure continued to change throughout the day as OWL continued to try and contact the coordinators.

There are many benefits to OWL, some of them being: OWL communication tool has enabled us to send crime alerts and other messages „in an instant‟ to our coordinators and membership networks. People receive messages via e mail, telephone, fax, mobile phone, texting and in hardcopy.

This system has helped increase the effectiveness of Neighbourhood Watch in Flintshire developing a modern communication tool that is simple to use and takes us into 21st Century.

Watch Coordinators can now set up and edit their own watches via their home computer, as well as utilising existing methods, post, fax, Neighbourhood policing teams, or by hand to police stations.

The system will allow crime alerts to be shared across divisional and force borders.

People are able to record observations online, no matter how trivial it may seem at times as „OWL‟ provides searchable intelligence to the police.

People can update their own contact details from the comfort of their home computer and they choose how they want to be contacted to receive messages, and even when and where they want to receive their messages. Some people receive alerts whilst at work, enabling them to act quickly.

Watch Coordinators now can communicate directly with their members.

Those without internet access are not excluded from the benefits of „OWL‟, as messages are sent by phone, fax, text & post to coordinators. We have many watch coordinators and members who receive the alerts by telephone.

Police & other agencies such as Trading Standards have been using „OWL‟ to send crime alerts and messages to the public.

„OWL‟ targets individuals, or larger groups such as streets, wards districts or watch schemes. In the event of a national or local emergency (flooding, terrorist etc) urgent messages can be sent out at once via „OWL‟ to the public. Within minutes of an alert going out, the coordinators‟ phones ring across Flintshire. Emails are received instantaneously. Evaluation - Recently we sent out an alert to our coordinators by telephone and e mail asking for their opinion on OWL and how effective they have found it to be. The response was astonishing. Within a few minutes of the alert going out the phone started ringing and didn‟t stop. Over the next few days coordinators and members continued to ring in with their views on OWL, all eager to keep OWL. The results of the survey reflects what people feel, it shows that people's fear of crime has been reduced and they see this is because the OWL 8

system in place is keeping them informed of crime and current issues that affect their communities. It helps them be and feel more vigilant. This is the first time a survey has been run anywhere in the UK to ask the public specifically what they think of OWL. We knew the response would be positive but we did not expect the public to write such complimentary words and to explain quite clearly how they feel it has helped them. Recently we sent an alert on telephone callers purporting to be from SKY TV. They told the householder that their warranty had expired and were asking for card details over the phone to make a payment there and then. People then later discovered that large amounts of money had been taken from their accounts. The following day we had a phone call from a Buckley coordinator. She had received a telephone call four hours after receiving the alert from a person saying they were from SKY TV and that their warranty had expired. The coordinator DID have SKY TV so this would be plausible but following the alert the coordinator was aware of the issue and was more vigilant and closed the conversation very quickly, preventing herself from being a victim of this scam. We have sent a wide variety of alerts to date, they include: Theft from vehicles, telephone scams, door to door sales, Theft of motor vehicle, Bank email scams, Postal scams, Keep well this winter (bad weather & ice), Cold Callers, Neighbourhood Policing Panel dates & information on CBM/PCSOs, Bogus Callers, Insecure Sheds and Garages, Seasonal Crime alerts, Oil theft and forthcoming Crime Prevention Events and many more. OWL has also recently won a prestigious e-Government National Award for “Innovation in strategy at a local level” supported by the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. The award for OWL was presented by John Suffolk, the Government‟s Chief Information Officer after a video message from the Prime Minister was played. Gordon Brown said, "The 2008 awards saw a record number of nominations from across the country - individuals, teams and organisations who are using new technologies in innovative and creative ways to deliver better public services." OWL (Online Watch Link) effortlessly targets crime prevention messages and appeals to households and businesses and was just one of 11 winners out of a staggering 588 entries from government organisations and councils up and down the UK. The category in which OWL won is for “delivering innovative strategies which have delivered above-average results in improved services, transformed processes & results, increased effectiveness.”

FIX MY STREET Flintshire is very fortunate to have OWL, Direct Path Solutions are constantly updating the site with new information services local to Flintshire. They have a link to „Fix My Street‟, you can enquire where your local dentist, garage, optician, police station are (and much more). CRIME ALERTS OWL now also has the latest crime figure (charts) for the North Wales area so you can keep up with whether crime is up or down. So, not only is it an effective method to send out information quickly and efficiently, it is becoming almost a „one stop shop‟ for useful information. IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED ON THE OWL SYSTEM, PLEASE CONTACT ME . If you would like to join Neighbourhood Watch and receive your alerts through OWL, you can either contact the Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association office directly on 01352 708118 or apply online, through OWL visit www.owl.co.uk 9

Well, second concert this month and I was very tired but I had promised to make and take sandwiches for the interval, so I had to go!! It was amazing, how can one man know all the words to so many songs? We laughed, we clapped and we joined in -- a very different evening from the Soar Chapel concert but equally as enjoyable. All that entertainment on our door step. Nancy Matthews 10

Tribute to "Sue the Butch" As a tribute to the late Mrs Suzanne Jones of the Butchers Arms, affectionately known as "Sue the Butch", the Nercwys Garden Show Committee has bought a weeping flowering cherry tree and planted it in the Village opposite Ty Draw Farm. This is in some small way as recognition for the tremendous amount of work that Sue did for the Committee and the Village during her time as Secretary for over 25 years. Sue was a fund of knowledge regarding the Garden Society and could find the answer to any query in the precise minutes she kept of the meetings. She also led by example working extremely hard to ensure the success of the Shows year after year. Sue will always be remembered with fondness and respect for what she did for the Garden Shows and the Village. A plaque is being engraved to be placed with the Cherry tree to mark and explain the tribute. Mike Morris

Nercwys Community Council

Cyngor Cymuned Nercwys Highlights from the Clerk. The Draft Minutes of each meeting are posted on the website and hard copy on each of the three village notice boards, the Chapel notice board, and the bus shelter, within three working days of each meeting. Agendas/Notices of Meetings are placed in the same locations. Please do keep yourself informed on what is going on. Each ordinary meeting of the Community Council is preceded by 10 minutes for members of the public to come along and draw matters to the attention of councillors. Of course each of the nine councillors [and me as Clerk] are happy to speak to people and discuss issues! Youth Council The next meeting of the Youth Council will be in the Chapel School Room at 6pm on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2009. They only last for an hour so if you are over 11 and under 18 years of age please come along and have your say. Elsewhere in the Nercwys News you will see plans for a trip out for the Youth Council which Councillor Darren Williams is organising (Page 13 - Ed). You will also see the response that the Youth Council made to an anonymous letter sent to the press about the Kick Back Wall. They prepared the letter themselves and I‟m glad to say that they got their facts right! (Page 23 - Ed) Weather permitting work should start on the Kick Back Wall this month [May]. Community Council Again there‟s lots going on – below are a few key points. If you want to know more please refer to the first paragraph above, or ask any Community Councillor. Dirty Dogs Councillor Paul Roberts is asking residents in the vicinity of the church where would be the best location for a dog waste bin in that area. It‟s great to have dogs; they get you out, always love you, and listen to all your troubles, but please clean up after them! Notice Boards The new ones should be going up shortly. Play Area After consultations carried out by the Youth Council with the Mums/Toddlers Group and the School, the Community Council has ordered a new piece of equipment in the Kiddies Play Area – to replace the „sprout‟ that is now becoming unserviceable. Senior Citizens’ Programme We had the lunch on Thursday, 26th February at the White Lion. It was fully booked up and was very well received by all who attended. Mandy and I even did 12

„Meals on wheels‟ to two people who couldn‟t make it there. The White Lion did continue off its own bat with bingo sessions for senior citizens on the following Thursdays. Bikes They‟ve all been serviced and are in tip top condition –there was heavy usage over the Easter period but they are now all back in the shed and raring to go. All you need to do is contact me [01352 758723] or Peter Leach [757284] to arrange it. Bill Brereton.

NERCWYS WI

We must say thank you to the Soar Chapel for keeping us cosy and warm through the winter months. Over the past few months, members have attended meetings in Gwernymyndd, Mold and Connah‟s Quay. Also, some members joined the County Holiday to the Isle of Man. The WI Bowls Competition was held recently in Nercwys, with members supplying food and drinks. Our President, Mrs. Elfrida Jones has chaired our meetings and thanked members for supplying the teas and all the prizes. The March meeting was well attended and the speaker was interesting, entertaining us with Welsh Legends and Folk songs. In April, the topic was Sugar Craft and the demonstrator, Mrs. Rita Davies, encouraged members to try their hand at making sugar flowers. In May, Mrs. Alma Gaffney showed us how to make quick and easy puddings which we were allowed to taste! A delegate from attended this meeting and we discussed the Resolution to be put forward at the WI AGM in London on the „Importance of the Honey Bee.‟ During all of the meetings, competitions have been popular and raffle prizes have been lovely. We have arranged a ramble around Nercwys on Friday, the 19th of June with refreshments at the Soar Chapel Schoolroom afterwards. Cost is £2 per person and everyone is welcome. On the day after, we will be having a stall at the Village Fair. In September, the walking and craft holiday to Bala is getting more popular and non-members are welcome to join us. The Craft Group is going well and we had a very enjoyable day out at Aintree Racecourse, not for the racing but for a Hobby and Craft Fair. A new member has joined us, a total of five since December and we welcome all new members and visitors. Elsie Sheldon

NERCWYS YOUTH OUTING An evening of ten – pin – bowling has been arranged for young residents of Nercwys (aged 11 to 17 – school years 7 to 12) on June 11th. A letter with full details will be sent to the parents of all children

within these ages. Darren Williams 13

A New Era for Shepherd’s Cottage

Users of Nercwys forest will be aware of the work that has started on the enclosure in front of the old shepherd‟s cottage. The Forestry Commission, Wales and Denbighshire Countryside Services are working in partnership to bring new life to the area. The old tree stumps that remained in the enclosure since it was cleared of timber 5 years ago, have now been removed, and local crafts- man have begun to re-build the tumbled down dry stone wall that surrounded it. The aim is to turn the small enclosure into a flower rich hay meadow – an important habitat for many plant and insect species. Once the dry stone wall has been fully re-instated, then work will begin to prepare the ground ready for sowing the wildflower seed mix in spring – so it will be at least two years until the meadow bursts into life – but well worth the wait! The old cottage at the top of the enclosure was knocked down in the early 60‟s when the forest was being planted, as it was deemed to be unsafe. It has long remained a pile of rubble, but now it is hoped to rec- reate the original floor plan of the building. Under the supervision of Fiona Gale, Denbighshire County Council Archaeologist, local schools and local volunteers will be invited to help to carefully remove some of the rubble back to the original footprint. It will then be re-pointed to safeguard it from any further destruction and an archaeological survey will be carried out. We think that it is important to save this little piece of local history and it will serve as an excellent educational tool for local school children. 14

Do you have any memories of the cottage?

If you have any memories of the cottage, the people who lived there, what it was like inside or any photographs, then we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sharon Woods, Forest Partnership Warden on 01352 810614.

Would you like to help?

Be a part of this project! We need help to strip back the stones to find the original footprint of the building. Volunteers are invited to come along and help out on Friday 4th September and Satur- day 5th of September.

We will be meeting at the Northern car park at 10am, bring sturdy footwear – steel toe caps if you have them as we will be moving stone – and appropriate clothing for working outdoors. These sessions are aimed to be enjoyable and, therefore, everybody works at their own pace, and you are welcome to do both days, just one day or even just a couple of hours.

For further information please contact Sharon Woods, the Forest Partnership Warden on

Nercwys School has been trying to get the green flag award, which is a very important eco achievement. Miss Catrin Davis and Mrs Eryl House came to assess us for the award. First they asked us about all of the eco friendly things that we have been doing like recycling bins, turning off the lights, making sure the taps are turned off and many more. We then showed them the power point that we made. We then went in to the garden and told them about the compost bins that we are going to put in the finished garden. Eventually they decided and told us that we have got the GREEN FLAG award and also we got a grade A (the best). We have received the green flag award all the way from Cardiff and it soon will be up and flying by the school.

Nercwys Community Council - Cyngor Cymuned Nercwys www.Nercwys.net Nercwys Community Council will be holding a consultation day on its Community Strategy. This will be on Saturday, 27th June, 2009, in the Chapel Soar Schoolroom. This is the first time that we have done this. If you live in Nercwys and want to have a say about the future of Nercwys please do come along and discuss it. The work that we do on this will build into our submission to the Local Development Plan which Flintshire County Council will have to prepare in due course. Watch out for further details in due course. Bill Brereton

CHURCH CHAT Mid June sees the 20th Anniversary of John‟s Ordination. We offer him sincere congratulations and very best wishes for the future of his ministry in Nercwys. Easter is behind us and we now look forward to the successive Church „Red Letter‟ days of the Ascension on Thursday 21st May, Pentecost (Whitsun) on Sunday 31st when we celebrate the Eucharist to the 1662 rite and Trinity Sunday on 7th June. Do come and join the congregation at 11.15a.m on Sundays and 11a.m. on Thursday. The concert was successful from the fundraising point of view and in giving the audience a very enjoyable evening but once again numbers were sparse. We hope for a huge crowd at the Strawberry Tea in the Church on Sunday afternoon, July 12th from 3pm. We plan to have various Church records on show, as well as the Gift Book recording all gifts made to the Church in the last 250 years. The Church will be taking part as usual at the Village Fair on the green on Saturday 20th June. Contributions to the cake and bottle stalls will be very welcome – bottles need to be with Sheila and Ken Bickerton a week beforehand. Mavis Bartlett

VILLAGE HALL Many thanks to all those people who ordered their summer bedding plants and helped to raise £150 for funds. The plants were really sturdy and healthy looking. If you missed out, look out for the order forms next year. Mavis Bartlett

The Mobile Library will be in Nercwys on the following dates: (all Mondays 8th and 22nd June, 6th and 20th July rd th th th 9.30 – 10.30 am) 3 and 17 August and 14 and 28 September. CHAPEL It was with deep regret that Elisabeth left us. We, as members, will miss her very much. She fought hard with her illness, never giving up until the Good Lord said, „Enough is enough‟. Yes, we will miss her so very much and we can only sympathise with her family Meinir, Nia and Haf and Elisabeth‟s grandchildren. We would like to sympathise with Olwena and Gwilym in their recent loss. Peter was a member of our Sunday School many years ago. We have to sympathise with Gwilym who is in hospital at Wrecsam. We hope he will be back home very soon. Our microphones are working well and we can now hear all that is going on, especially the children who will now have the advantage of the radio microphone. The „Sasiwn Plant‟ as we know it by, was a great success and was enjoyed by all. We are the only Sasiwn in North Wales and we are very proud about that. The children took part and were prepared by Eleri Jones, Eirwen Jones and Helen Davies. Our thanks go out to them for their work with the children. Our next service in English will be held on May 24th. All are welcome. The Literary Society Our concert was well attended, although Dr Ray was very concerned that there would not be enough room for all, but everything went very well. It‟s so good that Nercwys can put on this kind of culture and it has been going on for years now. Mr George Edwards, the chairperson of the evening, reminded us what his mother, Mrs Gwen Edwards, Bryn Onn, said, she had kept a diary and of course the concert was one of the things that Mrs Edwards had reported. It was in the early days that an eisteddfod was held, but soon became a concert. Thanks were expressed to all and a very substantial profit had been made. A meeting of the Society will be held soon, in order that new officials can be appointed and our winter programme can be made.

It‟s Easter Monday. We have just got home from Capel Soar's annual concert. An amazing evening! We were moved to tears by some songs and then tears of laughter with the next. Nosweth bendigedig !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Capel Soar . Cllr Nancy Matthews Mother and Toddler Group

We look forward to welcoming new faces and

Old friends for a cup of tea (or Coffee)

NEWS FROM WESTMINSTER MPs’ Expenses There has been considerable anger about the use of MPs‟ expenses which is why I have welcomed moves to fundamentally reform the system. Two months ahead of when were required to do so, myself and fellow Flintshire MP Mark Tami, have now revealed our expenses claims to the local media. I will be publishing my claims online as soon as they have been approved by Parliament, hopefully at the start of June. I have revealed my expenses before the formal release date as it is important to be able to share this information with the people I serve here in Delyn. Over the last four years I have claimed over £20,000 less than my full entitlement of £87,729. I have always strived to ensure that my claims were reasonable and within the rules. I hope that people will understand that living away from home four days a week will incur a cost, however, I understand that people are angry about the way the current system has been allowed to continue and in some cases abused. I fully support the decision to approve the reforms that will come forward within the Kelly report and I back the interim measures set out by the outgoing Speaker of the House of Commons. Amongst the measures announced is a cap of £1,250 on rent and mortgage repayments and with regards to accommodation, only rent, hotel bills, overnight subsistence, mortgage interest, council tax, utility charges and insurance will be allowed. All claims will also be published quarterly online. I came into Parliament to improve society for people here in Nercwys and across Delyn. These changes are a start but I know more work needs to be done to restore faith in our political system. The changes will be made and I will keep you updated. Gurkha’s Update I have supported everything that has been done to help the Gurkhas since they were given the right to apply to stay permanently in the UK in 2004. Since then, 6000 Gurkhas and their families have settled in the UK. The discussions centre on how we treat Gurkhas and their families who retired before 1997 – the point when the Brigade of Gurkhas HQ moved from Hong Kong to the UK. New and more generous guidance published last month will make more Gurkhas who retired pre-1997 eligible to settle in the UK. Whilst this is a step in the right direction it is clear that Parliament and society at large has demanded more. I am pleased that there has been quick action, responding to the will of Parliament, with a statement due shortly. I fully recognise the strength of feeling in Parliament and in Nercwys on this issue. I will be doing what I can to ensure that this issue of Gurkha settlement rights is addressed swiftly and fairly. (I was asked to submit these questions - these are Mr. Hanson’s answers - Ed) 20

Nercwys Library. The White Lion has given over a shelf for books on the basis of borrow one, read it, and bring it back [and maybe add to the collection]. It‟s mainly factual and/or historical books at the moment [I don‟t do Mills and Boon!]. Bill Brereton

Nercwys Community Council hosted a lunch for its Senior Citizens on Thursday, 26th February. After a winter of snow and ice, twenty two pensioners living in the village were treated to a slap up three course meal at the village‟s White Lion Pub. Two other ladies, who were not able to get to the pub, had meals delivered to them by the clerk to the council, Bill Brereton. Karen Hessing, licensee of the White Lion said, “We are delighted to have been able to help out, and we are now organising a bangers, mash, and bingo lunch once a month for the Senior Citizens.” Brian Roberts, Chair of the Community Council said,“ We are doing a lot of work for young people in the village, so it was good to give a lunch for the senior citizens to say thank you for their contributions to them over the years.” Alistair Elliott said, “It was just the job – very nice – the Yorkshire puddings were excellent!” Bill Brereton says, “The Community Council is keen to regain the community spirit for all age groups and I look forward to further events” (Press Release)

SPONSORED WALK - 4TH JULY, 2PM Friends of Nercwys School are holding a Sponsored Walk from Bryn Goleu, up Moel Findeg and the down to the Owain Glyndwr Pub. The pupils of the school will be asking for sponsorship, so please be generous, or better still join us on the walk and enjoy one the best views in Flintshire. Refreshments will be available at the pub. Contact Sarah Crosby for route details, [email protected] or phone 758334.

FLORAL TRIBUTE You have probably, like us, appreciated the heart-lifting displays of daffodils all along the verges in early spring, thanks to the efforts of the Nercwys Garden Committee and residents planting these up some years ago. However, when the daffs are over it is not the end of the story and one of the pleasures of living in Nercwys is the wealth of wild flowers in and around the village. On a recent walk we enjoyed the sight of generous drifts of wood anemeones which can be seen either side of the road when crossing the Terrig bridge towards Treuddyn. Starry white flower heads of 6 petals (although the number can vary and they are strictly sepals) dot a ground covering blanket of 3-lobed leaves. According to „Flora Britannica‟, the presence of wood anemones is a good indicator of ancient woodland, and they spread incredibly slowly by means of underground roots – about 6 feet in a hundred years! In the same area we watched a couple of early bees visiting the small purple flowers of ground ivy. Ground ivy is low growing with kidney shaped, scalloped edged leaves. An old name for it was „ale hoof‟ deriving from its use in brewing beer (before the use of hops) up until Henry VIII‟s time. The verges along Ffordd y Pentre during April and May were frothed with blossoms of cow parsley, called by some „Queen Anne‟s Lace‟ on account of the delicate tracery of tiny white flowers held aloft on radiating spokes from a central stalk. Also plentiful on the hedge banks was garlic mustard, its other common name being „Jack by the hedge‟. Tall spikes of bright green heart shaped leaves massed together, topped by diminutive clusters of 4-petalled white flowers. The crushed leaves and stalks give off a garlicky smell. And of course there were plenty of other flowers out in May including the ever present dandelions! We‟re looking forward to discovering more about local wild flowers as the seasons progress. Perhaps other residents too would like to share their observations about walks in the Nercwys area. Ken and Sheila Bickerton

The Mobile Office will be visiting Nercwys on Monday 22nd June. Also, the following dates are provisional: Monday 3rd August and Monday 14th September. Times of all visits are 10.15am - 10.45am and the Office will be parked opposite the Children’s Playground.

In response to your very unnecessary letter we the Nercwys Youth Council think that the letter was very insulting towards us as a youth council as we have worked extremely hard to work towards this kick back wall. In raising funds for the project we ourselves have raised £1000 through a car wash, sponsored bike ride, coffee morning, and at Nercwys village fete. Also we have done voluntary work in the Nercwys village fete in which on our own behalves we managed the coconut shy and face painting. Also the community council have generously donated £3000 not £12000 as was quoted in the previous complaint letter. Various other organisations have kindly donated grants as they think the kick back wall is a good idea for the Nercwys Youth Community as a whole. This is not just three middle class youths it consists of forty plus youths who will regularly use the kick back wall. We would also like to point out that there are no facilities or activities for the over 12s to use in the village. Also the Sports Council of Wales has donated £1800 which we are very grateful for as we are only a small organisation. If the person who wrote the last letter would like to discuss it further then we meet at the Chapel Room in Nercwys every two months. The next date is Tuesday, 23rd June, 2009, at 6 pm. Thank you This letter was written by the Youth Council Yours Sincerely in response to an anonymous letter to the Nercwys Youth Council Flintshire Chronicle - Ed 23

NERCWYS VOLUNTARY CONTROLLED PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have welcomed five new pupils to school, since our last article; Ruth and Eve Allen, Sophie Collinson, Jacob Morgan and Victoria Johnson (Early Entitlement). This takes our numbers up to 51, and we have a healthy Nursery group of 8 pupils for September 2009. We held our St David’s Day service in Church this year. It was a very enjoyable service for all concerned. Many thanks to Mrs Nicholls for accompanying the children on the organ, Miss Norma Evans for judging the art and poetry competitions, Mrs Mavis Bartlett for judging the costume competition and to the Vicar for supporting with the Service. Congratulations to the following pupils who won prizes Infant Costume 1st Victoria Gracey, 2nd Robert Crosby, 3rd Olivia Jones. Junior Costume 1st Emily Eagles, 2nd Xavier Phoenix, 3rd Megan Gaunt Infant Art – 1st Olivia Jones, 2nd Lauren Ridgway, joint 3rd Robert Crosby and Gwyneth Parry Junior Art – 1st Emma Thorogood, 2nd Sophie Peterson, joint 3rd Yasmin Thomas and Sarah Gerrard Junior Poetry – 1st Emily Eagles, 2nd Hannah James, joint 3rd Sophie Peterson and Xavier Phoenix. The children looked very colourful in their costumes on World Book Day and gave some good presentations on the characters they had chosen to dress up as. Chester Jets have been into School to do a series of basket ball coaching sessions and the children enjoyed going to watch a game at the Northgate Arena. Our theme for Dance Fest this year was ‘Waitangi Day in New Zealand’ and the pupils performed some traditional dances including the ‘Haka’. Many thanks to Sarah Crosby for all her choreography. Our History focus this year has been the Second World War, the children benefited from a visit to Ruthin Gaol where they had a series of focused workshops. We also had a Second World War Evening in School with pupils providing entertainment followed by homemade soup and cakes. Mrs Nicholls played the keyboard for all the pupils to sing ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and it was a real highlight of the evening. The children took part in the Mothering Sunday Service at Church with its very successful fundraiser for ‘water aid’. We took 19 pupils from Key Stage 2 to Kingswood Outdoor Activity Centre in Colomendy for two nights. We all had a lot of fun, doing the leap of faith, bouldering, low ropes, nightline and much much more. The children and the teachers all came back very tired but exhilarated! We are all looking forward to our visit again next year. Dates for your diary: Sports Day, on the school field, at 1.30pm Thursday 2 July 60s Summer Evening in School at 6pm on Thursday 9 July 24

Nercwys Community Council - Cyngor Cymuned Nercwys

On Sunday 3rd May, 2009, Brian Roberts. the Chair of Nercwys Community Council, presented to St Mary‟s Church in Nercwys a cheque for £1,500. The Community Council

CRAFT GROUP - We would normally be able to plan for fortnightly meetings but we have been made aware that the European Elections will be on 4th June 'a craft night' - and so it will change again. We may be able to have it on the Wednesday but up to now we haven't planned that far ahead!! Also - we try to go walking on the alternate Thursdays, leaving the Chapel Car Park at 6.30 and walk for perhaps one and a half to two hours (weather permitting of course!). Some- times there could be only two or three people but anyone would be welcome to join us. The Craft Group had an outing to a Craft Show at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday last - 14 people went on a small bus from the Chapel Schoolroom at 9.30 a.m. and returned around 5'ish - it was raining when we set off from Nercwys but soon cleared up and a good day was enjoyed by all - and of course we couldn't resist just having a look at the racecourse which recently was the venue for the Grand National! Some of us even saw a bride and groom having wedding photos taken near the course. There are plans for a trip to Cardiff in November for another 'Crafty' event - but that will probably include staying for the weekend too...... Elfrida Jones 25

THE CROSS OF DEWI SANT A BLACK FLAG WITH A VERTICAL YELLOW CROSS The accepted year amongst folk historians of the cross of St David is 675 AD. The flag is based on the armorial coat of arms of the diocesan of St David. In 1919 the Church of lost its Welsh department replaced in 1920 by the Church in Wales (not of Wales). Anglican churches had generally flown the cross of St George. Agitation grew in Wales for a similar flag based on the patronage of St David. Many churches in Wales flew the flag between 1936 and 1954. In December of that year an "official" Church in Wales flag was approved, this being a white background with a blue cross charged with a gold Celtic cross. In 1888 St David‟s University Lampeter, now The University of Wales Lampeter, adopted the flag colours as their university colours. During the Second World War the flag was used as the divisional formation sign of the 38TH (Welsh) Division of the British Army. In 2002 Cardiff City Football Club incorporated the flag into their new logo. The flag is sometimes mistaken for the very similar flag of St Piran of Cornwall. A black flag with a white vertical cross. The flag of Saint David is now flying at the Nercwys Bowling Club. (Thanks to Malcolm Wood for this article)

The masterplan is now falling into place. We have located two top class pilots in the village and now finally the work has been completed on the runway and landing lights in the centre of the village. We only need someone with air traffic control experience to complete the plan and then we will be able to divert flights from the John Lennon Plastic Ono Airport to the Nercwys Airways Facility. Monies raised from this will then be used to fund anonymous letters to the press. Is there anybody out there with air control experience please? W.E. Johns.

From CBM Gary Aldous: A few of the CBM's have got together and we are holding an over 50's conference aimed at preparing people for the winter of 2009. It will be held at Theatr on 1st July. More details to follow. POTHOLES: FCC telephone hotline: 01352 780812. Please state location of pothole and any further details. 26
