Chicago Fire Announce Mayors Cup ‘All Tournament’ Team
Wisconsin Fire players return after a successful five-day stint at the Mayors Cup International Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada
CHICAGO (February 23, 2015) — The journey began for the players last fall, when hundreds of hopefuls took part in a series of tryout events for talented players from the ten local youth clubs. Players were chosen to form nine ‘Wisconsin Fire’ teams. The teams were invited to attend the renowned Mayor Cup International Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada from February 12-16, 2015.
The teams arrived in Nevada on Feb. 12 and travelled to the Charlie Frias Park practice field in Las Vegas to train. The Wisconsin Fire teams played friendlies against Fire Juniors Elite SC before taking to the practice field on Feb. 13 to develop team formations and set pieces prior to the showcase. The showcase kicked off on Saturday, Feb. 14 with two days of group games, and semi-final and final games taking place on Monday, Feb. 16. As a whole, the teams went 16W-17L-6T, with 63 goals for and 44 goals against throughout the Showcase.
Special mention- The U17 Boys team reached the championship final only to fall on penalty kicks to Sparta United. The U14 and U15 Girls teams reached the quarter finals but they too exited the tournament on penalty kicks to Heat FC and Ajax United.
