Uffizio, 11 00193 Roma, Italy Your Eminence: We, Executive Members of the International Marian Association, which consti- tutes over 100 theologians, cardinals, bishops, clergy, religious and lay leaders from 5 continents, wish to, first of all, thank you for the many excellent and courageous articulations and defenses of our holy Catholic Faith, as contained in your recently released, The Cardinal Müller Report. At the same time, we are obliged to express to you our grave concern regarding your comment from the text when you state: “(for example, the Church … does not call her [Mary] “co-redeemer,” because the only Redeemer is Christ, and she herself has been redeemed sublimiore modo, as Lumen Gentium [n. 53] says, and serves this redemption wrought exclusively by Christ… (p. 133). You unfortunately refer to this term as an example of false exaggeration: “falsely exaggerating per excessum, attributing to the Virgin what is not attributable to her” (Ibid.). Your Eminence, in making this statement, albeit as a private theologian since a public interview carries no authoritative or magisterial status, you have publicly stated: 1) a theologically and historically erroneous position, since the Church undeni- ably has and does call Mary a co-redeemer; and 2) a position which, in itself, materially dissents from the repeated and authoritative teachings of the Papal Magisterium, the historical teachings from your own Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (Holy Office)and other Vatican Congregations; the pre- and post-conciliar teachings of the Magisterium as expressed through numerous cardinals, bishops and national episcopal conferences; teachings of the broader Church, inclusive of multiple can- onized saints and blessed who all do, in fact, assent to and theologically expand upon the authentic Magisterial teachings of the Church concerning Mary as a co- redeemer.

    THE ORANGE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION The Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) is a 501(c)3 charitable corporation that exists to serve the Diocese of Orange, including its parishes, schools, and overall diocesan mission. The OCF plans and conducts major diocesan fundraising programs, including the Proud to be Catholic Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), the For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, the Conference on Business & Ethics, the annual Wills and Trusts Weeks, and other special fundraising events. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou­ sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re­ ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi­ nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re­ biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc­ cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse­ crated many other bishops.

    1 THE DIVIE SAVIOR OF THE EUCHARIST Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time August 19, 1979 Proverbs 9:1-6 Ephesians 5:15-20 John 6: 51-59 My dear brother concelebrants and beloved sisters and brothers. Once again we have asked for hospitality from the Dominican Fathers in this church of El Rosario in order to celebrate our Sunday Eucharist. We thank them because our Cathedral continues to be occupied by workers who are on a hunger strike. Here in El Rosario you are seeing something different: a concelebrated Mass, that is, several priests surround the bishop to celebrate this solemn Mass. As was explained at the beginning of the Mass, a group of priests, in support of other religious communities of women and Christians in general, want to promote a time of intense prayer and fasting. These are spiritual powers that the Church is able to use during serious times in the Christian life. At the end of our celebration, one of the priests will explain all of this. Here I want to clearly distinguish and say that it is one thing to occupy the Cathedral where we are unable to celebrate our liturgy and that is much different from our gathering together in the Church of El Rosario, where we unite with the bishop in order to celebrate the Eucharist. Here in this church we experience strength and nourishment and inspiration so that the language of those who are speaking can be understood by the Church and then the Church is able to speak to the world. The Church is in the midst of the world precisely to continue the mission of Jesus Christ who lived and acted in service of the world and was obedient to the mission that the Father entrusted to him.
