  • Basic Questions
Graeme Shimmin Media Pack 1 Basic Questions Who are you? My name is Graeme Shimmin. I’m spy thriller novelist, and the author of the award- winning novel A Kill in the Morning. I also run a website http://graemeshimmin.com where I review spy thrillers and advise aspiring authors about writing and getting published. What genre is A Kill in the Morning? It’s an action-packed, fun spy thriller. It has been compared to Robert Harris’s Fatherland, Alistair Maclean’s Where Eagles Dare and Ian Fleming’s Thunderball. In ten words or fewer, how would you describe A Kill in the Morning? James Bond versus the Nazis. What's A Kill in the Morning about? The year is 1955 and something is very wrong with the world. It is fourteen years since Churchill died and the Second World War ended. In occupied Europe, Britain fights a cold war against a nuclear-armed Nazi Germany. In Berlin the Gestapo is on the trail of a beautiful young resistance fighter, and the head of the SS is plotting to dispose of an ailing Adolf Hitler and restart the war against Britain and her empire. Meanwhile, in a secret bunker hidden deep beneath the German countryside, scientists are experimenting with a force far beyond their understanding. Into this arena steps a nameless British assassin, on the run from a sinister cabal within his own government, and planning a private war against the Nazis. And now the fate of the world rests on a single kill in the morning . When is A Kill in the Morning out? It’s coming out on 19th June 2014, but you can pre-order it already from Amazon iTunes, Waterstones and most other bookstores.

DESCRIPTORS *Fiction; Higher Edtication; Literary Criticism; *Literary Genres; Narration; *Rhetoric; Undergraduate Students; Writing (Composition); *Writing Instruction IDENTIFIERS *Espionage; Mysteries (Literature); *Voice (Rhetoric); Writing Development ABSTRACT One of the biggest complaints shared by writing teachers is that students lack a sense of self. Writing handbooks and teachers are full of advice and exercises pointed at assisting students in finding their voice, their persona as writers, One method that may assist writing students in finding that voice would introduce students to spy fiction. Neglected by most academics as serious literature and ignored by writing instructors as a viable genre to enhance writing skills, spy fictionis actually a valuable tool in enhancing a student writer's sense of self by offering examples of writers establishing a persona in control of information. By introducing students to the spy and the spy master, instructors introduce students to a world in which knowledge power and its disclosure directs how others act. Contrary to popul...>r belief, espionage fiction does not focus on plot alone. It offers students an entire course in rhetorical issues. Spy fiction effectively explores establishing pathos and ethos as author by focusing on the concepts of trustworthiness, citizenship, and honesty.

A treat for spy fiction readersBy borneveryminuteWhat a delightful writer. The subject and detail may seem a little dated now but this is still a thoroughly good read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hardly a page-turner.By J. SteinI was never quite sure who I was supposed to be rooting for in this not quite dull book that was overpopulated with two dimensional characters. I am a Deighton fan, but I would not call this one of his best…certainly not on the same level as the 'Harry Palmer' stories or 'Winter' or the Bernard Sampson books. Any of which would be a far better first time choice for someone who has never read this author.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable readBy Paul WatsonIt's an interesting and engaging read. Not as good as other Deighton works, but certainly pulls you along the story to the end. A good spy thriller. • Stalking the Enemy Spy-Fiction Scenarios Before, During, and After the Cold War
Lars Ole Sauerberg Stalking the Enemy Spy-Fiction Scenarios Before, During, and After the Cold War. In his article, Lars Ole Sauerberg investigates the development of spy fiction in the course of the twentieth century. Through study of novels by authors such as Fleming, Le Carré and Deighton, he draws a parallel between the dissolution of the Cold War and the increasingly diffuse loyalty of the main characters in the novels. Sauerberg also delves into popular spy thrillers from Scandinavia and illustrates the close connection between recent events and its references in spy novels. To rely on literature as historical source material is, in principle, a doubtful venture. This has to do with the recourse to the imagination for the shaping of events that might have taken place but never did, as in the case of realism, or which have gone against the grain of what is thought possible, as in the case of fantasy.1 Realist narrative fiction is like a sandwich. In between the two bread slices of macrocosmic factual verisimilitude – Tolstoy’s War and Peace against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars – and microcosmic factual verisimilitude – the etiquette of partying in that same novel – we have the meat of invented characters and invented events. But in the two bread slices the historian may find quite a lot to his or her interest. The generic fiction narratives enjoyed by great numbers of readers, with mysteries, thrillers, and romances arguably the three most popular genres, seem to share a verisimilitude dynamic making them particularly interesting source material for the historian.

  • LEN DEIGHTON, Berlin Game
LEN DEIGHTON Berlin Game I 'How long have we been sitting here?' I said. I picked up the field glasses and studied the bored young American soldier in his glass-sided box. 'Nearly a quarter of a century,' said Werner Volkmann. His arms were resting on the steering wheel and his head was slumped on them. That GI wasn't even born when we first sat here waiting for the dogs to bark.' Barking dogs, in their compound behind the remains of the Hotel Adlon, were usually the first sign of something happening on the other side. The dogs sensed any unusual happenings long before the handlers came to get them. That's why we kept the windows open; that's why we were frozen nearly to death. 'That American soldier wasn't born, the spy thriller he's reading wasn't written, and we both thought the Wall would be demolished within a few days. We were stupid kids but it was better then, wasn't it, Bernie?' 'It's always better when you're young, Werner,' I said. This side of Checkpoint Charlie had not changed. There never was much there; just one small hut and some signs warning you about leaving the Western Sector. But the East German side had grown far more elaborate. Walls and fences, gates and barriers, endless white lines to mark out the traffic lanes. Most recently they'd built a huge walled compound where the tourist buses were searched and tapped, and scrutinized by gloomy men who pushed wheeled mirrors under every vehicle lest one of their fellow- countrymen was clinging there.

  • Paper Proposal for Aesthetics and Politics Workshop MANCEPT
Morphet, JR; (2013) Intertextuality in Deighton and Le Carré: using London to resite the other. Presented at: MANCEPT Conference in Political Theory, Aesthetics and Politics Worksho, Mannchester, UK. CONFERENCE ITEM Intertextuality in Deighton and Le Carré: using London to resite the other Janice Morphet BSc MA PhD FRTPI, Visiting Professor, Bartlett School of Planning, UCL, Wates House, 22 Gordon Street London WC1 [email protected] 07960944333 Abstract The British spy novel took a realist turn in the 1960s epitomising the new wave. The first five novels each written Le Carré and Deighton were published in the period 1960-1970. Although both authors and these specific works have remained popular in genre spy fiction, there has been little consideration of the works in relation to each other and in their role together in situating the potential threats of the post-war period in a UK domestic setting rather than on mainland Europe. The transition of Fleming’s novels into film starting with ‘Dr No’ in 1962 suggested that UK spies engaging in espionage undertook this in exotic locations which were far removed from everyday life. An examination of the fiction of Deighton and Le Carré suggests a different world where the locus of external danger was in the suburban midst of Surrey or Wood Green. Whilst the war was over, the British state was still actively defending itself from internal threats and external dangers. The use of specific London locations in these first ten novels – particularly in ‘Call for the Dead’, and ‘The Spy who came in from the Cold’ by Le Carré and ‘The Ipcress File’ and ‘Berlin Game’ by Deighton create a language of location and fear.
