Sandusky Home July 19, 2016 Town News Sandusky High School Alumni Association Orlando Pace Named to Football Hall of Fame Orlando Pace (1994) has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Enshrinement Ceremony is Saturday, August 6, at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Pace was the number 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft. He played college ball for Ohio State and professionally for the St. Louis Rams from 1997 to 2008 and finished his career with the Chicago Bears in the 2009 season. Orlando Pace. Johnson-Laws earned six varsity letters, three each in swimming and gymnastics; held five school records during her swimming career at SHS; and was the first female swimmer in the school's history to produce points in a state meet. Ross Oeder (2003) went on to play baseball at Wright State University and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, spending his first season with Batavia in the New York-Penn League and the next season playing Class A ball with Quad City. Keith Pace (1986) Pace earned two varsity awards in football for the Blue Streaks, gained first team Buckeye Conference honors and was named the hitter of the year, most valuable lineman and blocker of the year in 1985. Tom Patterson Jr. (1992) Patterson received 4 swimming letters and 1 in cross country; was an 11-time champion in the Northwest Aquatic Conference; was a former record holder and a 14-time sectional swimming champion. He still holds the school record for the 200 freestyle and was named MVP three years in a row (1990-1992). He received the Dan Thomas swimming award in 1992 and still holds the career points record with 2,009. Tamala Perryman (2002) Perryman was a four-time letter winner and MVP in girls’ track. She placed in the state meet four years in succession, including placing second in the 100 and 200 dashes her junior year. Continued on page 7 Sandusky High School Alumni Association June 1. 2016 To All Members of the Sandusky Alumni Association I am so pleased to write to you today to provide a brief update on the programs and initiatives occurring at our alma mater. You will be pleased to know that the pride, tradition, and sprit of excellence that has been a part of our school system for over 180 years is still present in our students in 2016. These are exciting times in our district as we celebrated our third year of consecutive increased enrollment and continued progress on our Transformation Plan. At SHS, we have initiated Blue Streak University (students securing college credit while in high school), the Great Lakes Visual and Performing Arts Academy, and the successful launching of the Global Internship program where our seniors are engaged with over 120 business and industries in the community and around the world. As you can see, things are busy and exciting in our schools. Thank you for being a member of the Alumni Association and your continued interest in our students. Because of your interest and engagement with your alma mater, we are able to continue the fine traditions that make our schools so dynamic. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to arrange a personal tour for yourself or your classmates. I love showing off our school. Please plan on joining us for homecoming this October as the entire community will celebrate the enshrinement of Orlando Pace into the National Football League Hall of Fame during our Homecoming Parade. This promises to be a historic event and more details will be forthcoming. Finally, I cannot tell you how proud I am to serve as the CEO and Superintendent for our schools. It’s an awesome opportunity to contribute and give back to a school district and community that has been so wonderful to me and all of us. After 40 years, William Kraus, class of 1952 and former high school choir director, performed his last concert as director of the Sandusky Choral Society this spring. Heather Love Carman (1989), will be taking over as the new director in the fall. L. Forbes Hotchkiss (1954) reports that they are now retired, having sold their business 5 years ago. He worked into his seventies and is still having some difficulty adjusting to retirement. He is still racing a sailboat as he did in Sandusky – although not as fast as he would like – he speculates that may be age related. He misses Sandusky, noting that he had a Tom Sawyer life style and didn’t know it until he left. Things are good. The Lord has provided five children and 13 grandchildren to keep them active. He also wishes that members of the class of 1954 would provide more updates to the Hometown News – so let’s see if we can make that happen. Sheri (Vannatta) Fitz (1976) was named Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators Secretary of the Year! She works at Granby Elementary School in Columbus. Jim Obergefell (1984) visited Sandusky this month to promote his book “Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality”. It was co-written by Debbie Cenziper, a Washington Post investigative reporter. Obergefell was the plaintiff in the 2015 Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage. Martin Howell (1990) is the senior architect for the White House and President’s Park. He works for the National Park Service. He’s also done work at the Eisenhower National Historic Site and Gettysburg National Military Park; at Ellis Island; at Peterson House, the house where Abraham Lincoln died; the U.S. Supreme Court building and the U.S. Capitol Building. His family has a number of SHS graduates - Linda Streng Howell (1965) and brothers Kevin (1992) and Jim (1997). Chad Fisher and his wife Katie Fisher (both 1990) with their team at Rock City Church in Columbus are celebrating their 5-year anniversary On January 21, 2016, Brian (1992) & Mira Gundlach welcomed their fourth child, a son, Timothy Harland Gundlach. C.J.Bailey (1994) has accepted a new call at First Lutheran in Tiffin, Ohio. He and his wife Wendy (Geasan) Bailey (1995) have two sons, John and Andrew. Deputy Greg Hall (1998) is an employee of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and is assigned to the Erie County Department of Job and Family Services. Deputy Hall goes out of his way for every child he comes in contact with making them feel comfortable and taking the time to talk with them. Deputy Hall is very resourceful and will help a family out in any way he can. He is known throughout the building and with other professionals as being extremely patient and having an ability like no other in de-escalating families in very stressful and intense situations. Deputy Hall is always a phone call away from dropping whatever he is doing to help in any way he can. Thank you Deputy Hall for all that you do, and congratulations for being this year’s ACE award winner. Taylor Vargo (2013) advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 200-meter breaststroke at the US Olympic Trials, finishing 12th overall in the competition with a time of 2:27.99. She is entering her senior year at Ohio State, where she has placed in two Big Ten events and took 17th at the NCAA championships. Geena Freriks (2015), also competed at the trials. She just completed her freshman year at the University of Kentucky. Davion Fisher (2016) won the state title in the Division I long jump competition this spring with a jump of 24-feet even. He is Sandusky’s first state track and field champion since Daily Moore (2009) won the 110-meter hurdles in 2009. Reunion News The Class of 1941 held their 75th Class Celebration (Reunion) at Outback Steak House on Thursday, July 14. The Class of 1942 plans to meet and greet former members for a buffet luncheon at the Sandusky Yacht Club, 529 E Water St., on Wednesday, July 20 at 11:15 am. A wheelchair, cane and walker entrance is available. Reservations are NOT necessary but further information is available. Contact Don Leech at 419-625-2935. The Class of 1949 gets together on the first Thursday of every month for lunch at 11:30 with each person paying for their own meal.
