Amadou Ndonga Independence

Amadou Ndonga represents Independence High School and the Columbus City League–South. He has been named a football Scholar-Athlete of the Week in his league. In addition to football, he is a member of the track, baseball, and wrestling teams, where he placed 6th in the city meet. He also is interested in poetry, song writing, show choir and is a member of REAL young men. A member of the National Honor Society, he is also senior class vice president and a recipient of Independence’s Biology and English student of the year awards. Amadou holds a 3.94 GPA and will attend The Ohio State University. He is the son of Abdou Ndongo and was coached by Maurice Douglas.

Alex Backenstoe Hilliard Davidson

Hilliard Davidson’s Alex Backenstoe is the representative for the OCC-Central. The senior captain was named 1st team OCC Central and Central Division Player of the Year in 2013. Additionally, he was 1st team All-State and All-State Defensive Player of the Year. He is also a letter winner in lacrosse and wrestling, as well as a three year academic letter award winner. He has partici- pated in various fundraisers, prayer groups, and is a volunteer Hilliard youth lacrosse coach. Alex has a 4.1 GPA and is undecided on his choice of col- lege. He is the son of Tammy Backenstoe and was coached by Brian White.

3 Remy Powell St. Charles Preparatory School

Remy Powell attends St. Charles Preparatory School, which is a member of the CCL-Silver. He was a two-year varsity starter and was named All-CCL and Academic All-Ohio in 2013. In addition to football, he is a four year member of the basket- ball team. He’s served two years on student council, is an Eagle Scout, and a member of the engineering team. He has raised money for cancer research by riding in Pelotonia the past three years. He is also a camp counselor for Recreation Unlimited, working with campers with muscular dystrophy. Remy holds a 4.12 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is deciding between the University of Cincin- nati and The Ohio State University. He is the son of David and Nancy Powell and was coached by Jeff Pharion.

Joseph Siegenthaler New Albany

New Albany’s Joseph Siegenthaler represents the OCC-Capital. As a senior, he was named 1st team All-OCC and 2nd team All- District. He was also chosen as a Columbus Dispatch player of the week. He is a member of the track team and is also involved with the cancer research foundation Relay for Life. Additionally, he vol- unteers with Special Olympics, Gracetown Church, and the New Albany Walking Classic. Joseph holds a 4.0 GPA. He is currently undecided on where he will attend college. He is the son of Jennifer and Jason Quinn and was coached by Pat Samanich.

Tyler Stoyle Centerburg Tyler Stoyle is a scholar-athlete at Centerburg High School, which is a member of the MOAC-Blue. He quarterbacked a team that had an undefeated 10-0 regular season record for just the 2nd time in school history. As a senior, he was 1st team All-Con- ference and the MOAC Player of the Year. He was 1st team All- District and All-Region, where he was also named the Offensive Player of the Year. He is a three-year letterman in , and a member of the FFA. He has volunteered in his community to help renovate a playground and basketball court. Tyler has a 3.044 GPA. He is deciding where to attend college and plans to study exercise science to become a strength and conditioning coach. He is the son of Jim and Natalie Stoyle and was coached by Jim Stoyle.

4 Jack Baesman Buckeye Valley

Jack Baesman is the captain of the Buckeye Valley football team, which is a member of the MOAC-Red. As a senior, he was named 1st team All-MOAC and 1st Team All-Central District. He also plays tennis, where he is a two-time district qualifier. He’s a member of the drama club and participates in musicals and his church’s bell choir. Jack, a National Honor Society member, has a 4.2 GPA and will attend Northwestern next year. He is the son of Rod and Karen Baesman and was coached by Michael Marshall.

Joshua Coleman Fairfield Christian Academy

Joshua Coleman represents Fairfield Christian Academy and the MSL-Cardinal. He was named as team captain his senior year. In 2013 he was named 2nd team MSL-Cardinal. He also participates in track and field and archery. He is a student representative for the senior class. A member of the media team, he produces a weekly television show called “Knightly News.” The past two summers, he has volunteered at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Joshua is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 3.956 GPA. He will attend Kent State University. He is the son of Dean-Andrew and Danell Coleman and was coached by BJ Queen.

Dominic Garris Bloom-Carroll

Dominic Garris represents Bloom-Carroll and the MSL-Buck- eye. As a senior, he was named Honorable Mention MSL, 1st team All-County, and 1st team Central District. He is a member of the baseball team and also participates in the Bloom-Carroll Spanish and Republican clubs. He is a three- year member of the Principal’s 3.5 Club, an academic award at BCHS. Dominic is a member of the National Honor Society and holds a 4.0 GPA. He will attend The Ohio State University next year. He is the son of Joe and Lori Garris and was coached by Phil Mauro.

5 Ryan Beveridge Hilliard Bradley

Hilliard Bradley’s Ryan Beveridge represents the OCC-Cardi- nal. His senior year, he was Bradley’s captain and team MVP. He was named 1st team All-OCC and 2nd team All-District. He is also a member of the wrestling and baseball teams. He is a STAR tutor and is part of the engineering club. He is part of a youth group, volunteers with various fundraising events and referees flag football. Ryan holds a 4.159 GPA and has been on the honor roll all four years. He is currently deciding where he will attend college. He is the son of Dawn and Doug Beveridge and was coached by Michael LoParo.

James Curry East

East High School’s James Curry represents the City League- North. He was elected as team captain and named team MVP. James was also named 1st team All-City his senior year and was Honorable Mention All-District. James is also a member of East’s basketball and baseball teams. He volunteers at school assisting in the office and assisting teach- ers. He’s a member of the Super Honor Roll, is on the Dean’s List, and is a student ambassador. Additionally, he volunteers at Trevitt Elementary School. James has a 3.4 GPA and will either attend Ohio Dominican University or Air Force. He is the son of Anthony Curry and was coached by Lewis Carter.

Eric Maxwell Bexley

Eric Maxwell represents the MSL-Ohio. The Bexley High School student-athlete was a team honorary captain and a McDonald’s Scholar Athlete as a senior. He was named Honorable Mention All-District. Eric played JV baseball for two years, then became the press box announcer his junior and senior years. He’s a member of the robotics club, the marching and concert bands, and participated in a school trip to Peru. He’s a member of the Cum Laude society, is an AP Scholar and received the school’s peer elected citizenship award. Eric holds a 4.43 GPA and will attend either The Ohio State University of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the son of Dina and Dan Maxwell and was coached by John Smith.

6 Collin Young Lancaster

Collin Young represents the OCC-Ohio and Lancaster High School. As a senior, he was named his team’s offensive player of the week and 1st team All-OCC. He is also a member of Lancaster’s baseball team and the Varsity L Club. He is part of the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, an organization for high school journalists. He is also involved with his church youth group. Collin is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 3.503 GPA. He will attend Liberty University. He is the son of Ronny and Suzanne Young and was coached by Rob Carpenter.

Ryan Weber Loudonville

Ryan Weber of Loudonville High School represents the Mid- Buckeye Conference. His senior year, he was team captain and MVP, leading his team to its first league title since 1992. He was also named the Mid-Buckeye Conference Defensive Player of the Year. In 2013, he was named to the North Central Ohio Coaches Association 1st Team, as well as Defensive Player of the Year. He’s a member of the wrestling team and finished 4th in the state as a junior. He’s also involved with 4H. He has received academic letters at Loudonville since 2010 and has twice been named the Loudonville Student of the Month. Ryan is a National Honor Society member and has a 3.9 GPA. His choice of college is to be determined. He is the son of James and Leslie Weber and was coached by Justin Todd.

7 Charles Benton Johnstown-Monroe

Charles Benton represents Johnstown-Monroe and the Licking County League-Small School Division. He is a four time scholar athlete award winner and was named a Chris Spielman Scholar Athlete of the week as a senior. He’s received All-State and All- District Special Mention as a kicker, as well as All-State Special Mention as a punter. He is also a member of the soccer and basketball teams. He is senior class president, a chorale member, and a symphonic band member. Additionally, he is president of B.U.I.L.D. of Licking County, a student led organization that goes on mission trips to rebuild homes destroyed in natural disasters. Charles is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 4.652 GPA. He is deciding between the University of Dayton, The Ohio State University, or Ohio University. He is the son of Alan and Kathy Benton and was coached by Mike Carter.

Isaac O’Brien Watkins Memorial

Isaac O’Brien of Watkins Memorial High School represents the Licking County League-Big School Division. He is a team captain and a three-year letter winner. In 2012, he was named All-Region and was a scholar-athlete. He is a member of the track team, the chess club, student council, and student ambassadors. He has also participated in school musicals. He’s an Eagle Scout, and has been student body president and class vice president. Additionally, he was named Homecoming King. Isaac is a National Honor Society member with a 3.985 GPA. He will attend the University of Cincinnati. He is the son of Bill and Nancy O’Brien and was coached by Jeff Severino.

8 2014 Central Ohio College Scholar-Athletes

Teddy Kuntz Denison University

Representing Denison University is Teddy Kuntz. He was named 1st Team All-District Academic in 2013 and was 2nd Team All-NCAC. Teddy was team leader in sacks for 2012 and 2013 and played in 40 games during his career. Denison finished 7-3 in 2013, the best finish since 1986. He is a Dean’s List member, Top 50 Scholar-Athlete at Denison and was nominated for the 2013 Distinguished Leadership Award. His career plan is to enter medical school at the University of Cincinnati in August 2014. Teddy has a 3.55 GPA, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. He is the son of George E. Kuntz, III and was coached in football by Jack Hatem.

Zack Grieves Otterbein University

Zack was a team captain, four-year letterman and two-year starter at defensive end. He was recognized as first team All-OAC in 2013. He had career marks of 168 tackles and 24.5 tackles for a loss and 10 QB sacks. He maintains a 3.291 GPA and made the Otterbein Dean’s List three times. Zack has volunteered since high school working sum- mer camps at Huron Elementary and also served as a maintenance worker at Creative Housing in Columbus. Zack plans to attend graduate school and obtain his MBA, while serving as a graduate assistant football coach. He would like to have a career in coaching or in sales. He is the son of Don and Beth Grieves and was coached in football by Tim Doup.

9 Domenic Hebebrand Capital University

Domenic lead Capital in tackles and was in the top-10 in tackles in the OAC. He was named Academic All-OAC in 2012 and 2013 and a member of the Dean’s List and President’s List. He is originally from North Royalton, Ohio. Domenic is majoring in accounting and plans to pursue a ca- reer as a financial analyst or in medical sales. However, his favorite class at Capital was “Introduction to Rock and Roll!” He maintains a 3.54 GPA. His parents are Mike and Maria Hebebrand and he was coached by Craig Candeto.

Dominic Clegg Ohio Dominican University

Dominic was a semi-finalist for the National Football Foun- dation’s Campbell Trophy in 2013. He was honored as a second team Academic All-American, a member of the Academic All-Dis- trict Team and Honorable Mention All-GLIAC this year. Dominic carries a 3.688 GPA and has been on the Dean’s List every quarter for ODU. He is majoring in education. He is undecided on his post-graduate plans but may pursue professional football overseas or in an arena league – afterwards he plan to teach mathematics at the high school level and coach football. He is the son of Colleen O’Brien and Bob Clegg and was coached by .

Reed Franklin Kenyon College

Reed was a team captain and led the team in tackles for loss in 2013. The Kenyon defense led the team to a second place finish in the NCAC, their best finish since 2005. Reed was selected as a 2013 All-NCAC first team. Reed maintains a 3.3 GPA and plans to be a teacher and foot- ball coach following graduation. He is a member of the Fellow- ship of Christian Athletes and a member of the Academic Merit List. Reed volunteers with the 2nd and Seven Foundation, Wiggin Street Elementary school, Relay for Life, the Johnstown-Monroe Football team, and the Knox County Learning Center. Reed is the son of Chuck and Vicky Franklin and was coached by Chris Monfiletto.

10 Drew Basil Ohio State University

Drew is originally from Chillicothe and finished his career at Ohio State with the second most games played in Ohio State his- tory, with 52 games played (tied with four others). In the regular season he was 9 for 10 in field goals and 77 of 79 in extra points, the latter of which is a school record. Career marks for field goal accuracy is 3rd best all-time. He owns the school record of 102 consecutive extra points made. Drew graduated in December with a degree in Communica- tions, ending his academic career with a 4.0 in his final semester. He has been very active in the community, volunteering with the 2nd and Seven Foundation, Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Manna Café, VA Hospital and the OSU Medical Center. He will pursue a kick- ing career in professional football and eventually work in the field of Communications. He is the son of Elaine and Brad Basil and was coached by .

Mason Espinoza Ohio

Mason was a two-time captain for the Bishops and started 40 games. He finished as the career leader in game, season and career passing yards and passing TD’s. He was a 4-time All-NCAC selection, and stands as the NCAC career leader in passing yards and total yards. Mason also was recently recognized as the MVP in the 2013 Senior National Bowl and the 2013 All-American Senior Bowl He is active in Athletes-In-Action, a four-time member of the Dean’s list, three-time recipient of the Kushida Multicultural Award, Honors Student every quarter and recipient of the Fraternal Order of police Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. Mason is active in his church and was a former Children’s Ministry Instructor. Mason carries a 3.6 GPA and plans on pursuing professional football and eventually a career as football coach. He is the son of Holly and Danny Espinosa and was coached by Tom Watts.

11 2014 Ohio Gold Award

Recipient: Orlando Pace

Orlando Pace was a two-sport star for the Blue Streaks of Sandusky High School was a Parade magazine All-American as an offensive tackle, while also making the USA Today All-American team as a defensive lineman. “Orlando Pace is not only the best offensive lineman I have ever coached, but he is the best I have ever seen,” John Cooper, Ohio State coach from 1988-2000. “Every game was a highlight reel for him. We ran a lot of counter sweeps and a lot of screens, and on many of those plays Orlando had to be out in front of the ball carrier. And we had some pretty good ball carriers.” As a Buckeye, he dominated. He was a two-time consensus first-team All-American, capturing the in 1996 and the in 1995 and 1996, becom- ing the first two-time winner of that award. In 1996, Pace earned Ohio State’s team MVP award along with the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football as the Big Ten’s most valuable player. Pace finished fourth in voting for the as a senior in 1996 and helped encourage the growth of the phrase “pancake block,” earning the nickname “Pancake Man” for his style of dismantling opposing players. Pace did not allow a sack during his final two seasons at Ohio State. In 1997, Pace was selected first overall in the NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, where he starred for 12 seasons, capturing NFL All-Pro honors five times, earning seven trips to the and helped lead the Rams to a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. Two years ago, Pace was honored by the Buckeyes with an induction into Ohio State’s Sports Hall of Fame. This summer, he’ll take his place in the Hall of Fame and we can only assume his next stop will be Canton. He continues to pay forward with a an annual scholarship to his high school in Sandusky. Oralndo and his family live in St. Louis.

12 2014 High School Coaches Award

Recipient - Jeff Gafford

Jeff Gafford spent nearly 30 years as a head football coach at the high school level. He was a in the OHSAA’s Ohio Capital Conference for 27 years. He began his career as head coach at Franklin Heights High School from 1984-91 before taking the helm at Worthington Kilbourne High School until 2005. During his career at Worthington Kilbourne, Gafford guided the Wolves to nine consecutive winning seasons, two regional runner- up finishes and a pair of OHSAA Final Four appearances. He wrapped up his high school coaching career at Marysville (2007-12) and finished with a 168-116-1 career mark. Gafford is a member of the Worthington Kilbourne Faculty Teaching Hall of Fame and the Dublin High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a 1979 Ohio State University graduate in physical education, and a graduate of Dublin High School. Jeff taught mathematics, physical education and vocational education at various time during his teaching career. In May, 2012, Jeff retired from teaching in the public schools and now works, part-time in the private sector In 2013 Jeff served as the tackles and tight ends coach at Capital Univer- sity.

13 The 2014 Tyson Gentry Courage Award

Established in 2009 and presented annually to a player, coach, staff member or fan whose actions best demonstrate the qualities of courageous leadership shown by Tyson Gentry. His courage and perseverance have had lasting impacts on the many lives. Tyson Gentry had his playing career cut short in spring, 2006, when he suffered a fracture to his vertebrae. He was the Tyson Gentry recipient of the Bo Rein Award in 2008 for the most inspirational player on the 2008 Ohio State Football team. He continues to work towards getting out of his wheelchair but is determined to use his disability to help others until then. He attributes his positive attitude to his faith, family and friends. Tyson’s wife, Megan, also plays a major role in supporting him. Tyson is currently working on his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling through the University of Buffalo and will graduate in May 2014.

The KBK Leadership Award

The KBK Leadership Award embodies the true spirit of strength, resilience, and courage in the classroom, on the field and in the community. This award honor’s a selected high school and college student-athlete that is a “leader among leaders”. The recipients have made sacrifices for the greater good of others while main- taining their performance on the field and in the classroom. They are more than student-athletes...they are Leaders! “

14 Where Are They Now?

Greg Bellisari

Annually the Columbus Chapter tries to recognize one of the past scholar-athletes from the area that has taken the lessons learned in football and in college and has had succeeded in many aspects of life. Greg Bellisari is one of the true scholar- athletes in Ohio State football history. His playing career was spectacular, where he led the Buckeyes in tackles from his line- backer position in 1995. He was co-cap- tain of the 1996 Rose Bowl champions and went on to play in the NFL. At Ohio State, Greg was an Academic All-American in 1995 and 1996 and was one of only 13 senior’s to be awarded a scholarship from the National Football Foundation as a National Scholar Athlete in 1996. Greg coached as a graduate assistant at Ohio State until he was accepted into medical school and then went on to complete his training in Orthopedic Surgery and now practices here in Colum- bus. Greg and his wife Mary along with their four children live in Dublin.

15 John Wooldridge - President

John Wooldridge was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, where he was a student athlete at Central Hower High School. There he par- ticipated in basketball and track and was an All-American running back in football. He is a member of the Hower Hall of Fame and the Summit County Sports HOF. He was awarded a football scholarship to the Ohio State University where he majored in criminal justice and played tailback for the Buckeyes. From 1982 – 1986 he helped OSU to a 3-1 Bowl record and win two Big 10 Championships. In 1985 he was Ohio States’ leading rusher and 2nd leading scorer. John played three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 1897-1990. Wooldridge began a career in criminal justice with the State Attorney General where he served as a Special Agent on a Joint State and Federal Task Force against organized crime. Following 13 years in this field he changed his focus to community and real estate development where in 2005 he joined KBK Enterprises. KBK Enterprises, headquartered in Co- lumbus, OH, is one of the nation’s largest real estate development firms and has offices in Washington, D.C., and New Orleans. Since 2006 Wooldridge has served as Vice President of Business Development, where he leads the company’s national business development initiatives. In addition to his service as President of the Columbus Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, John serves on multiple Boards of Directors, most notably the National Monuments Com- mission, where he strongly advocated to assist in securing funding for the development of the National WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C. He is married to wife, Kimberly and has a 27 year old daughter, Na- kita and a 23 year old son, John II.

National Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients Each year the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame awards a scholarship to the top 15 seniors in college football. The scholar- ship, which is an $18,000 grant for graduate work, is based upon combined excellence in athletics and academics.
