NEW YORK, GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM - DAY (1958) A long, still WIDE SHOT of the museum’s facade: a temple of sculptural perfection. A checker CAB rolls down Fifth Avenue. Then a 1957 CADILLAC, followed by a late 1950’s New York City BUS. TWO MEN in fedoras and suits stroll through frame, stopping briefly to stare up at the building. We PRESS FORWARD into the space where the men just were, closer to the building, CLOSER, passing through the walls... INT. GUGGENHEIM, ATRIUM - CONTINUOUS Inside. WORKMEN and islands of SCAFFOLDING punctuate the vast open atrium. Ethereal light pours down from the huge skylight above. The building is still unfinished. SUPER: 1958. The HAMMERING continues, louder now, mixed with other sounds of CONSTRUCTION. One by one, the workmen stop hammering, doff their caps and stand at respectful attention.     THE HOME AND STUDIO CORE TOUR Introduction The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Tour as described in this section of the Volunteer Manual is considered the CORE TOUR in terms of tour mechanics and content. Overview of Mechanics · Under normal circumstances, follow the tour route/sequence of 11 Stops and 2 pauses · For each of these 11 designated Stops, the manual includes all of the rooms that should be presented at that stop. This means that often you will talk about rooms before the group walks through them. Therefore, it is important to prepare the group and to keep them moving to the next stop. · Guests expect a 45-55 minute tour, and by following the mechanics of this tour will allow you to move your groups efficiently through the museum to ensure satisfaction, museum safety and security and efficient logistics. · Interpreters must stop only at those locations indicated in this manual. · Pauses are used to gather your groups and provide way-finding only. They are not intended for delivering tour content · Keep the tour group together. Give firm, but appropriate, verbal directions as necessary to achieve this important objective. Remind visitors of the rules. · Close all exterior doors YOURSELF! If you touch an exterior door, you own the responsibility to make sure it is secure before you let go of the knob. · Be guided by specific directions from Guest Relations staff regarding exceptions to this standard tour to meet immediate needs. · Under usual circumstances, a single interpreter will conduct the entire tour for a given group of no more than 16 visitors.

Almost as soon as it was built, the roof began to leak. Lloyd Jones, in a fury, went to his desk and called his cousin. "Damn it, Frank," he raged, "it's leaking on my desk!" To which Wright calmly replied, "Richard, why don't you move your desk?" Wright, imperious and cocksure, the architect whose roofs always leaked: this view coalesced during his lifetime. If he was anything, the great and flamboyant architect was considered a law unto himself, an aberration, a historical anachronism; hardly the seminal figure he loudly proclaimed himself to Fallingwater—its concrete terraces cantilevered over swift-moving Bear be.     FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT ARCHITECT February 20 - May 10, 1994 For Immediate Release FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT A Biography Frank Lloyd Wright's enduring involvement with landscape was formed in the rolling hills of southern Wisconsin, where he was born in 1867. Wright's mother encouraged his creative skills at an early age by introducing him to the "kindergarten gifts," or special toy blocks, designed by German educator Friedrich Froebel. She raised her son in an extended Welsh immigrant family steeped in a tradition of nineteenth-century romantic idealism and liberalism. In his late teens, Wright studied draftsmanship in the Engineering School of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1888, he was hired as an apprentice architect by the successful Chicago firm of Adler and Sullivan, where he stayed until 1893. Despite his lack of formal training as an architect, Wright's talent was quickly appreciated. He soon became Sullivan's assistant, and Sullivan his mentor. Ultimately Wright was given his own design assignments, including the James Charnley House, Chicago (1891-92). In 1889, Wright married Catherine Lee Tobin, with whom he had six children, and built a Shingle Style house in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. Four years later, he established his own practice.
