Cold War II: Hollywood's Renewed Obsession with Russia
H-USA Edited Collection: Cold War II: Hollywood’s Renewed Obsession with Russia Discussion published by Tatiana Konrad on Monday, August 13, 2018 Date: October 1, 2018 The Cold War, with its bald confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, has been widely depicted in film. Starting even before the conflict actually began with Ernst Lubitsch’s portrayals of communism in Ninotschka (1939), and ranging from Stanley Kubrick’s openly “Cold War” Dr. Strangelove (1963) to Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), Hollywood’s obsession with the Cold War, the Soviets/Russians, communism, and the political and ideological differences between the U.S. and Russia were pronounced. This obsession has persisted even after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Cold War tropes continue to be (ab)used, as can be seen in multiple representations of evil Russians on screen, including Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One (1997), Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 (2010), Phillip Noyce’s Salt (2010), Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), John Moore’s A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), and Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer (2014), to name just a few. All these films portray Russians in a rather similar manner: as members of the mafia or as plain criminals. Yet recently Hollywood cinema has made a striking turn regarding its portrayals of Russians, returning to the images of the Cold War. This turn and the films that resulted from it are what the collection proposes to examine. The sanctions imposed on Russia during the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 by several Western countries, including the United States, along with Trump’s admiration for Putin, Russian attempts to influence the 2016 American election, the fatal poisoning in the UK, etc., have led to a tense relationship between Russia and the Western world. -

Mark Ivanir | Biography
MARK IVANIR | BIOGRAPHY Mark Ivanir has been working as a professional film and television actor in Los Angeles since 2001. His first major film role was in Steven Spielberg's 1993 Oscar winning epic SCHINDLER'S LIST. He rejoined with Spielberg twice, first for a cameo appearance in TERMINAL, then again for THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. A pivotal role in Robert De Niro's 2006 film, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, landed Mark a role in Barry Levinson's WHAT JUST HAPPENED, this time acting alongside De Niro. Many films followed. Mark has booked over 35 Guest Star and Guest Lead roles on television. Ivanir's road to Hollywood was circuitous at best. Born in the communist Ukraine, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1972. After being cast by Spielberg in SCHINDLER'S LIST, Ivanir moved to London to study with Philippe Gaulier and the actors of the Theater De Complicite. During this stint, he landed roles in THE MAN WHO CRIED (with Johnny Depp) and SECRET AFFAIR which encouraged him to relocate to Hollywood. Ever since, Mark has been working on films in the US, in Europe and in Israel. In Germany he has been working with Dennis Gansel on THE FOURTH STATE and with Dominik Graf on the highly acclaimed mini-series IN THE FACE OF THE CRIME. In Europe, Mark was also working with Fernando Meirelles on his episodic feature film 360. Most recently, Mark co-starred alongside Catherine Keener, Philipp Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken in A LATE QUARTET. Mark currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters. -

T. HARDY MORRIS to RELEASE the DIGITAL AGE of ROME JUNE 25Th VIA the NEW WEST RECORDS IMPRINT NORMALTOWN RECORDS
T. HARDY MORRIS TO RELEASE THE DIGITAL AGE OF ROME JUNE 25th VIA THE NEW WEST RECORDS IMPRINT NORMALTOWN RECORDS SPIN PREMIERES “THE DIGITAL AGE OF ROME” VIDEO TODAY T. Hardy Morris is set to return with The Digital Age of Rome on June 25th via the New West Records imprint Normaltown Records. The 10-song set was produced by Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Rayland Baxter) and mixed by engineer Nate Nelson. It follows the Diamond Rugs and Dead Confederate member’s 2018 acclaimed Dude, The Obscure, which Pitchfork said "may be Morris' best record; it's certainly his most complex and compelling statement" and "it's sharp focus is refreshing," while AllMusic said, “Morris takes his ambitions skyward, infusing a joyous psychedelia into the mix…” After touring Dude, The Obscure, Morris had 13 new songs demoed for a new album. He was excited to get his band together to rehearse the songs before hunkering down in the studio to record...then the pandemic hit. Sequestered at his Athens, GA home with his family, Morris, like most everyone else in the past year, mulled over what was truly important to him and in response, crafted an entirely new set of songs. Enlisting a group of musicians including Drive-By Truckers drummer Brad Morgan, singer-songwriter Faye Webster and many others, Morris pulled no punches with his mesmerizing lyrics and hazy brand of southern glam rock. Looking directly inward and captivated by the sobering realities of the pandemic, Morris has composed one of his most personal works yet. He tackles the well-worn anxieties of the past year as pandemic and political divisions ravaged America. -
