These comprise taxonomic research and Red List assessments, monitoring of populations and the status of habitats, monitoring of introduced species and research into their ecology and research into the status of pollinators. Further research is required on the effects of invasive species, identification of key pollinators and the effects of climate change. Red List assessments are given for threatened Mollusca, Orthopteroidea and Lepidoptera. Keywords: invertebrate conservation, invasive species, pollinators, Red List assessments, taxonomy In 2001, a meeting was held in Washington to investigate the practicalities of developing a global strategy for invertebrate conservation. This ‘Invertebrate Scoping Workshop’ proposed 8 main actions needed for the full integration of invertebrates in the planning and conservation assessments of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) (IUCN/SSC/CBSG 2001). To date, these have only been partially implemented due at least in part to a lack of funding. The recommendations are being implemented at a local level in Seychelles and this provides an indication of the relevance of these actions to developing conservation action. Taxonomic Specialist Groups of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission cover only a small proportion of the world’s invertebrates. -

Distributional data for the country are presented and references are given to the original de - scriptions and to illustrations of the species that may be useful for identification. An identi- fication key is added and shells of all gastropod species are illustrated. We emphasize that some of the freshwater gastropods occurring in Bhutan may act as hosts for trematodes, as is known to be the case in other countries in Asia. These species may cause trematodiases in livestock and humans. Introductory references to the literature on snails and their parasitic trematodes are cited. All nomenclaturally available names are discussed including junior homo- nyms and objective junior synonyms as well as unavailable names such as nomina nuda, infrasubspecific names and, to some extent, also incorrect subsequent spellings. In the family-group a total of 28 names are included in the nomenclator, of which 21 are available and seven unavailable names. Of the avail- able names in the family-group, six are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. In the genus-group a total of 57 names are included in the catalogue. Of the available names in the genus-group, 11 are invalid for nomenclatural reasons. -

Chapter 32 MOLLUSCA AMIT MUKHOPADHYAY*, BASUDEV TRIPATHY AND ABHIJNA GHOSH ABSTRACT Freshwater molluscs play a pivotal role in the freshwater ecosystem. Globally, there are estimated 5,000 species of fresh water molluscs, of which 217 have been reported from India. This paper gives an updated nomenclature with a checklist of 150 species of gastropods and 67 species of bivalves reported from freshwater environment of various ecosystems of India. In terms of biogeographical distributions of freshwater mollusc in India, 15 species of gastropods and 18 species of bivalves have discontinuous distribution. Western Ghats is considered to be a unique biodiversity hotspot for molluscs with a record of 77 species of freshwater molluscs alone in this area. This paper along with an updated nomenclature of freshwater molluscs of India also highlights their diversity, distribution and conservation in India. Key Words: Mollusca, Bivalves, Gastropods, Freshwater, India. INTRODUCTION In the freshwater environment, molluscs are an important group and their abundance plays pivotal role in freshwater ecosystem functioning (Vaughn et al., 2004). Fresh water molluscs are common in ponds, lakes, paddy fields, quiet water pools, and flowing waters like lower section of perennial rivers, irrigation canals etc. Freshwater gastropods are generally found attached to submerged vegetation, rocks, sticks, bricks etc, but bivalves live partly buried in the sand or mud. Similar to the gastropods the bivalves exhibit variations in shell features depending upon the ecology of the species and may produce eco-phenotypes (Subba Rao, 1989). Molluscs form an important component of biological monitoring in terms of rating the water quality and status of aquatic systems (Strong et al., 2008). -
