To Aberdeen Police Commissioners' Rent Roll Volume 1, 1795 (CA/9/3/1/1) Index to Aberdeen Police Commissioners' Rent Roll Volume 1, 1795 (CA/9/3/1/1) The names of both the proprietors and the occupants of the properties are listed, along with details of their occupation, place of origin (when not resident principally in Aberdeen), and very often whether the property concerned is rented for residential or business purposes. In the original, the annual rental value of the premises is noted followed by the assessment made. However only the rental value has been included in this list. One of the earliest descriptions of the area comprising the Crooked Quarter dates from 1889; "The Crooked Quarter runs from the top of the north side of Netherkirkgate taking in St Nicholas Street and all the other parts of the Town west of the Gallowgate and Broad Street, including the west side of these streets, bounded on the south by the Green Quarter." Former Fellows of The Royal Society of Edinburgh 1783 – 2002 Biographical Index Part Two ISBN 0 902198 84 X Published July 2006 © The Royal Society of Edinburgh 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PQ BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX OF FORMER FELLOWS OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH 1783 – 2002 PART II K-Z C D Waterston and A Macmillan Shearer This is a print-out of the biographical index of over 4000 former Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh as held on the Society’s computer system in October 2005. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

PREFACE. Of the numerous biographers of the poet Burns, few have dilated on his lineage. Some doubtless felt that his position might not be elevated by any pedigree, however famous. Others may have been content to hold that himself being in lowly circumstances, any inquiry as to his progenitors would be useless and unprofitable. By his biographer Dr Currie he is described as " in reality a peasant." What in respect of descent Burns really was these Memoirs will show. Bemotely sprung from a landed stock, his im- mediate ancestors were yeomen, at first opvdent, latterly the reverse. The family had produced another poet, the author of "Thrummy Cap;" but decided indications of intellectual activity did not appear in the house till subsequent to the marriage of the poet's paternal grandfather. The wife of this person was of the family of Keith of Craig, a branch of the house of Keith-Marischal.

  • The New South Wales Parliament Under Siege
‘Build your House of Parliament upon the River’: The New South Wales Parliament under siege Gareth Griffith and Mark Swinson * You must build your House of Parliament upon the river . the populace cannot exact their demands by sitting down round you. — The Duke of Wellington This piece of advice is attributed to the Duke of Wellington, a man who knew about such things as pickets and blockades, but also about Parliament and its ways. On Tuesday 19 June 2001, a part of the populace associated with the trade union movement, determined to have its demands satisfied, massed round the New South Wales Parliament House. For those who do not know it, the New South Wales Parliament is not built on a river, or a harbour for that matter, but on the crest of a modest rise, fronted by Macquarie Street to the west and, at the rear, by Hospital Road and beyond that by a spacious open area called the Domain. To the north side is the State Library building; to the other, Sydney Hospital. At its height, in the early afternoon of 19 June, the Parliament was surrounded by a demonstration estimated to be 1,000 strong. The Premier called it a ‘blockade’. 1 Unionists called it a ‘picket’. 2 Some press reports referred to it as a ‘riot’. 3 * Gareth Griffith is a Senior Research Officer with the New South Wales Parliamentary Library; Mark Swinson is Deputy Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Parliament of New South Wales. 1 L.
