This year we have included the ISO groups in the Social section, because they accomplish a function parallel to that of the fraternities. The past year was one of increased social activity on the part of the independent units.

At Georgia Tech the fraternities join together through DELTA SIGMA PHI the Interfraternity Council to promote these principles and to maintain the Charles Almon high standards to which they have pledged themselves. Jack Martin The Council s program of constructive competition in scholarship, athletic, welfare, and social events has long been an asset, not only to the school, but DELTA TAU DELTA to the fraternities by creating a better understanding between themselves. Blount Boswell Highlights of the year are the dances which the Council sponsors in the Bob Griffith spring and fall at which time individuality among fraternities ceases, and all band together to present the outstanding social event of the year. KAPPA ALPHA The Interfraternity Council as a whole and its members individually are Harold McKenzie constantly seeking to promote a better student life at Georgia Tech. Its Sam Mitchell programs are constructive, its attitude toward college activities healthy, and its interest in the progress of Georgia Tech outstanding.

ZETA CHAPTER
ALPHA EPSILON PI was found- ed at New York University in 1913. Since that time, it has expanded to fifty-five active chapters in the United States and Canada, and to seventy-five hundred members. The Zeta chapter was reacti- vated at Georgia Tech in March, 1946; and its short period of ac- tivation has been marked with great progress. Zeta has acquired a house and large dining-recreation Who said that? hall annex; both of which are dedi- cated to the memory of Harold Rubin, a brother who died in the war. The fraternity has entered every phase of campus life, from publications and honor societies to athletics and social functions.

"To unite fraternally the young men of the south with those of the north and to foster a Christian brotherhood dedicated to the task of achieving and cherishing permanent peace." These were the principles upon which Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity was founded on September II, 1865. Today, eighty- six years later, this fraternity has ex- panded until there are one hundred and nine active chapters in the United States and Canada, boasting a membership of over 65,000. The fifty-ninth chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity was organized on the Georgia Tech campus on the 18th of September, 1888. Since then it has grown, until this year, sixty-two years later, the 1000th member was initiated. Members of Alpha Tau Omega Fra- ternity will be found in the honor socie- ties, student government, school athletics, school publications, and many other ac- tivities at Georgia Tech. Many social functions balance out our scholastic and extra-curricular activities.

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity was founded in 1839 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and since that time has become one of the leading national so- cial fraternities. Beta has grown until now it has ninety-six chapters in thirty- seven states and two provinces in Canada. Gamma Eta, the local chapter, was installed at Tech in 1917 and moved into its present house in 1927. Gamma Eta has always been active in campus activi- ties. Last year it distinguished itself in the fields of both scholarship and ath- letics. This year the chapter has pro- duced an exceptionally large number of leaders in campus activities, especially in organizations end publications. Buffet suppers and house dances have been included in the numerous social activities of the chapter. The Betas also held their annual Christmas party for orphans from the Baptist Children s Home and took part in another Miami Triad Dance during a social year which was climaxed by the Beta Kid Party.

OMEGA CHAPTER
On December 24, 1824, the Princeton Order of Chi Phi was founded at the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University. From that time forward, chap- ters of Chi Phi have been established at the outstanding colleges and universities throughout the country. On June 2, 1904, the charter of the Omega Chapter was granted. In 1910 a chapter house was obtained making Chi Phi the first fraternity on the Tech campus to own its house. The present house was built in 1928. Chi Phi has always been an outstanding fraternity on the campus not only socially, but also athletically and scholastically. The fraternity has had a most enjoyable social season climaxed by a winter formal and an informal sport dance in the spring.

IOTA DELTA CHAPTER
Since its founding at Union College, Hamilton, New York, on May 20, 1841, Chi Psi has grown to its present size of twenty-seven chapters. It was the fifth fraternity at Union, where the Greek letter fraternity originated. Iota Delta was established at Tech on December IS, 1923. Still small in number as compared with some other fraternities, Chi Psi has been a strong believer in conservatism and has placed the stress on quality rather than "Whoa!" quantity. Because of this policy the ties between the chapters and the national fraternity have always been exceptionally strong. Encouraging a well-rounded college life for its men, Chi Psi places its emphasis on scholarship. A two hundred dollar scholarship award is given annually to the man in each chapter with the best scho- lastic record. Rounding out a full college program are sports, organizations, and other campus activities.

Founded December 10, 1899 at City College, Delta Sigma Phi has expanded to a position where it now has 72 chapters and 9 colonies. We are one of the few fraternities that have ever been allowed at Washington and Lee University. Delta Sigma Phi was the first fraternity to establish a chapter at SMU. With the main offices in Denver, Colorado, Delta Sigma Phi engulfs the United States from the east to the west coast and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border, with a chapter at McGill University, Montreal. The Alpha Gamma Chapter received its official charter in January of 1920. Stressing scholarship primarily, we encour- age our members to take part in as many school activities as possible and as a result have representatives in the honor societies, school government, and ath- letics. Fundamentally a social fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi is a leader in the social world and is particularly famous for its Carnation Ball.

DELTA TAU DELIA was founded in 1859 at historic Bethany College in Vir- ginia. Since that time it has grown to its present size of eighty-five undergradu- ate chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Our alumni chapters num- ber eighty-five also, and are located in all major cities of the nation. Gamma Psi Chapter came to the Geor- gia Tech campus on April of 1921. Not only is Delta Tau Delta one of the older fraternities at Tech, but it also consistently ranks among the leading fraternities. This is evidenced by the fact that many campus leaders are Delts. This year, through much hard work, we won first place in the Homecoming Decorations Contest. One of the chief assets of Gamma Psi is our house-mother, Mrs. Jane Wilson. Mother Wilson has been with us for three years, and by her presence the Shelta is made a true home away from home. The year was rounded out by full par- ticipation in all extra-curricular activities, and by our usual social functions, includ- ing hayrides, costume parties, house- parties, and the annual Rainbow Ball.

THE KAPPA ALPHA Order was founded in 1865 at Washington and Lee Uni- versity. The Alpha Sigma Chapter cele- brated its fifty-first year on the Tech campus last fall, having been installed October 21, 1899. Kappa Alpha has seventy-two chapters stretching from coast to coast across the central and southern sections of our country. The fraternity has some 31,000 alumni participating in the life of its ninety alumni chapters. This year, as usual, Kappa Alpha has produced a large number of leaders in all phases of campus life politics, pub- lications, organizations, and various other activities. The year was highlighted by an "Old South" Ball, the Convivum, which is the celebration of General Robert E. Lee s birthday, a house-warming party for the new house, and the annual spring house party.

THE KAPPA SIGMA fraternity was founded at the University of Virginia in 1869 and has since become one of the five largest fraternities in the country. The Georg ia Tech chapter, Alpha Tau, being chartered in 1895, was one of the first fraternities on the Tech campus. While advocating a well rounded col- lege life for its members, the Alpha Tau chapter is collectively interested in main- taining a high scholastic standing and in keeping an important place in campus affairs. An active social year is achieved through outdoor parties, informal dances, The mob at the party. and house-parties; while an active par- ticipation in intramural events completes a full program. A new fraternitV house to be built in the near future and a strong pledge class make our future seem bright and prom- ising.

Founded in 1909 at Boston University, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity has matured into one of the largest social fraternities in America. It boasts of a total of one hundred and thirty-seven chapters in forty-two states of the United States and two provinces of Canada. The national fraternity, although one of the youngest, is already rich in tradition. The Beta Kappa chapter was estab- lished on the Tech campus on October 6, 1942, after achieving an enviable record during its affiliation with the old Beta Kappa national fraternity. With an highly successful rush season, a Christmas party, and a winter formal at the Biltmore hotel serving as the high- lights of a sparkling social season; and with many members of the chapter quick to take their places as prominent campus personalities, Beta Kappa has enjoyed a successful year.

The PHI DELTA THETA fraternity was founded on Christmas Day, 1848, at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Since that day over a hundred years ago, it has grown to include one hundred thirteen chapters located in the United States and Canada and over seventy thousand initiates, fifty thousand of whom are living today. The Georgia Tech chapter, Georgia Delta, has initiated over eight hundred members since its founding in 1902. In addition to its social activities, which include the annual spring formal and Miami Triad dances, the Bowery ball, house-parties, etc., Phi Delta Theta con- tributed more than its share toward the leadership of the campus. Phis were found in the field of student government, publications, honor societies, and all prin- cipal organizations; as well as in the field of athletics, which include many Phi Delt lettermen. Phi Delta Theta won the coveted IFC trophy, and the Athletic trophV that is presented by the Athletic Association to the fraternity winning the most intramural athletic events.

Always active in campus affairs, Xi chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi continues its activities for another banner year on the Tech campus. With an active member. ship of twenty-five fraters, Phi Ep hopes to achieve even greater honors and suc- cess in both the activity and scholarship fields than has been won in the past. The national fraternity was founded at the College of the City of New York, on November 23, 1904, and the chapter here at Tech was instituted January 15, 1916. Since that time the name of Phi Ep has been associated with almost every activity on campus. The fraternity has always striven for a small membership consisting of the most active men in school affairs. Social life too is an integral part of Phi Ep life. The social season starts in the fall with the rushing season, and con- tinues throughout the year with at least one function per month in addition to regular dating. The spring quartet is highlighted by an annual weekend house party, usually at one of the many beau- tiful lake resorts of North Georgia. With all these activities, scholarship is still maintained at a high level. Phi Ep consistently ranks among the top three fraternities on campus for scholarship. The Phi Ep fraternity house, first modern, post-war house to go up at Tech, was officially opened last October by President Van Leer, who originally broke ground for the house.

GAMMA TAU CHAPTER
PHI GAMMA DELTA originated on the old Jefferson College (now Washington and Jefferson) at Cannonsburg, Pennsyl- vania, in 1848. It is the thirteenth oldest Greek-letter fraternity in America. Since its founding, Phi Gamma Delta has spread throughout the United States and Canada and now has a membership of forty-nine thousand. Of the eighty-one schools and universities on which Phi Gam chapters are represented, 68 per cent are rated among the first four fraternities of the respective campuses. Gamma Tau chapter was installed at Georgia Tech in 1926 when Gamma Tau Delta, a strong local fraternity, was granted a charter by Phi Gamma Delta. The chapter is active in extra-curricular and intramural activities, and each year enjoys a full social life. The annual house-party, the Norris Pig Dinner, (Alumni gathering), a Christmas party for under- privileged children, and other dances and parties help to round out the school life. ALPHA NU CHAPTER
PHI KAPPA SIGMA was founded in 1850 at the University of Pennsylvania. The Alpha Nu Chapter at Georgia Tech was established in 1904, and distinguished itself in founding the ANAK Society, the highest local honorary society on the campus. Phi Kaps have always been among the campus leaders and have been continu- ally striving for better relations among the new students arriving quarterly. Although Phi Kappa Sigma has a rela- tively small chapter on the Tech campus, one can always find a Phi Kap in the midst of any worthwhile activity. Plans made in past years are now becoming a reality, and new and improved plans are being made for the future.

ALPHA RHO CHAPTER
THE PHI KAPPA TAU fraternity was first organized at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1906. It has since grown to sixty-six chapters which are widespread throughout the United States. It is one of the few fraternities which own their own headquarters buildings, and most of the chapters own their own houses. Phi Tau first appeared on the Tech campus when Pi Lambda Delta, a fraternity, received its charter as Alpha Rho chapter of Phi Kappa Tau on April 27, 1929. The chapter was dormant dur- ing the war but it was reactivated in 1946 and is now recognized for its par- ticipation in the scholastic, athletic and social aspects of campus life. KAPPA DEUTERON CHAPTER
PHI SIGMA KAPPA was founded at Massachusetts State College on March 15, 1873. It has since grown to fifty-two chapters which are located primarily in the northeastern section of the United States. In line with Phi Sig s newly initi- ated expansion program, four carefully selected institutions have been granted charters this year; and Zeta Deuteron Chapter at the University of Wisconsin is being reactivated. The installation of these chapters is expected in the near future. Kappa Deuteron Chapter was estab- lished at Tech in March of 1923; since then, Phi Sig has maintained a prominent position in varsity and intramural activi- ties. Our social calendar includes hay rides, house dances, costume parties, and picnics, and is highlighted each year by a Christmas party and moonlight girl dance. With the aid of our active alumni chapter, Kappa Deuteron is anticipating the acquisition of a new home within the next few years.

ALPHA DELTA CHAPTER
PI KAPPA ALPHA was founded at the University of Virginia in 1886. It was at first a southern fraternity but in 1909 expanded nationally until today its chap- ters number over 100 with a Pike house at almost every major college in the nation. Alpha Delta chapter was installed at Tech in 1904 and has since taken an active part in all campus activities, being especially successful in its sports program. The social side of college life is kept going with many parties and dances throughout the year. The highlights are the possum hunt every fall, the Black Pi Kappa Alpha Homecoming! and White ball during the winter quar- ter, and the many house parties in the spring. With many of its brothers graduating last spring, the chapter roles dropped to around fifty, but a successful rush season brought in twenty-three good boVs, bring- ing the chapter back to full strength.

PI KAPPA PHI was founded at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina in December, 1904. It now has forty-four undergraduate and thirty-three graduate chapters in the United States and Canada. The Georgia Tech Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was granted a charter in 1913 and has been a campus leader since that date. The Iota chapter of Pi Kappa Phi has been active in all school activities, both social and scholastic. The most important social function held by the Pi Kappas is the Rose Ball. The fraternity "Rose" is presented at this dance.

GEORGIA PHI CHAPTER
Since its founding at the University of Alabama in 1856, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has steadily grown until it now stands as the largest national college fraternity in America. At present there are 127 SAE chapters in 47 states with a total of almost 78,000 initiates. From its very beginning SAE has been a leader in the fraternity world. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was the first college fra- ternity to erect a shrine dedicated to the memory of outstanding brothers. This shrine, the Levere Memorial Temple, also houses the national offices of the fra- ternity, and its classic beauty lives in the memories of SAE s who have visited it. SAE is also noted as the first college fraternity to inaugurate a leadership school for the training of her potential officers. The Georgia Phi chapter of SAE was the second fraternity to be installed on this campus, and, since its chartering in 1890, its members have continued to hold that spirit that made SAE one of the foremost fraternities. Every year SAE ranks tops on the campus of Georgia Tech with men in all extra curricular activities and on all the varsity teams. The events of the social calendar are highlighted by a mountain house party in the spring and a formal dance in the winter. These are, of course, chaperoned by our house mother, Mother Lou, who has been with the chapter for five years.

BETA PSI CHAPTER
THE SIGMA CHI fraternity was founded in the year 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Today, there are over a hundred Sig chapters throughout the United States and Canada. The Beta Psi chapter of Sigma Chi was founded at Georgia Tech in 1922, upon the absorption of Pi Alpha Sigma, a local fraternity. It has since that time grown in such a way that it is today one of the most outstanding fraternity chapters on the campus. Year after year it continues to rank high in scholastic standing, school leadership, and intramural activities. The social calendar of the chapter is always full. As in the past, the most noteworthy social event of the year was the annual Sweetheart ball in November, at which Miss Joanne Lloyd was crowned "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" by the chap- ter president, Bill Knight.

GAMMA ALPHA CHAPTER
SIGMA NU fraternity was founded at Virginia Military Institute in 1869 as the Legion of Honor. There are over one hundred chapters in forty-six states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. Gamma Alpha was installed at Georgia Tech in 1896. The chapter has initiated over 800 members in a period of fifty- four years. The White-Star formal high- lighted our spring activities, and a house party at Lake Burton was thoroughly en- joyed by al! who attended. We are still anticipating the construc- tion of our new house on fraternity row. Despite no house during this year, the chapter has been held together by having parties almost weekly. The ties between the brothers are very strong and the spirit of unselfish coopera- tion between the brothers ranks very high.

GEORGIA ALPHA CHAPTER
SIGMA PHI EPSILON was founded on the campus of Richmond University in Richmond, Virginia, in the year 1901. In the forty-nine years since its founding, Sig Ep has grown to the present stature of over thirty-seven thousand members in one hundred and five active chapters in principal colleges throughout the country. The aim, in contrast, is not that of becom- ing the largest fraternity, but rather to grow in strength and character through a normal program of expansion. Georgia Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was chartered on the campus of Georgia Tech on April 1, 1907, and is one of the older fraternities on campus. Since its chartering, Georgia Alpha has initiated nearly seven hundred men into its brother- hood. While not seeking an unwieldly She s a real winner first place. membership, the "house with the red door" is ever open to those seeking fellowship and brotherhood. The past social season of Georgia Alpha was highlighted by the annual Christmas party for some of Atlanta s un- derprivileged children, an unusual Pledge Party which proved to those present to be the "informal" of the year, a joint ball with their "good-neighbor" fraternity. Tau Epsilon Phi, and the annual "Sig Ep Golden Heart Formal" held in conjunction with two other chapters in Alabama. With all their varied activities, the Sig Eps ever keep an observant eye on scholastic standing and diligently strive for scholastic improvement.

Always a leader in campus affairs, Phi chapter of Tau Epsilon Phi is looking forward to another outstanding year on the Georgia Tech campus. With an active membership of thirty-five boys, the "Tep s" hope to maintain their standing as the finest fraternity on the campus. Several of the brothers are outstanding members of the I. F. C., Bulldog club, Hillel, Technique, Tau Beta Pi, Pershing Rifles, Arnold Air Society, Scabbard and Blade, R. 0. T. C., and Who s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The "Tep s" are well rep- resented in just about every honorary, scholastic, and professional society at Tech. Another item of which Tau Epsilon Phi is proud are the three scholarship trophies, won in recent years, and the I. F. C. trophy for the best house on campus which they won the first time it was awarded and have not lost since. These trophies plus the President s trophy stand out on Tau Epsilon Phi s trophy shelf.

BETA PI CHAPTER
TAU KAPPA EPSILON was founded on January 10, 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University. TKE, which stands among the larger national fraternities, has well over eighty active and alumni chapters, and an ever-increasing membership, which now totals almost eighteen thousand members. Beta Pi Chapter has now completed its third full year on the Georgia Tech campus. The installation of this chapter which was held on June 5, 6, 1948 has proven to have been the springboard for the Tekes entrance into full partici- pation in campus activities. The Tekes at Tech now have twenty Stan Kenton and June Christy with Les Blythe, Warren Bolton and Ian actives and twenty pledges with a host of alumni. Having moved from their former house, the Tekes are planning and looking forward to the purchase of their own chapter house.

ALPHA NU CHAPTER
Since 1856 when Theta Chi s first chapter was founded at Norwich University in Norwich, Vermont, the fraternity has ex- panded to over one hundred chapters in colleges from coast to coast. The Alpha Nu chapter was installed at Tech in 1923, and during the past quarter century has participated fully in intramurals and all other extra-curricula activities. While maintaining a well- balanced social plan, Alpha Nu endeavors to develop the necessary and admirable ideals of scholarship and brotherhood.

THETA XI was founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1864. Since that time, it has grown to forty-seven active chapters from coast to coast. Established here at Tech in 1948 as the Theta Xi Colony, the group has actively participated in all fraternity activities. During the fall of 1951, the colony was chartered as the Beta Alpha chapter. As part of the installation celebration the first formal dance of the chapter was the scene for the presentation of the Sweet- heart of Beta Alpha of 1951, Miss Anne Turner of Columbus, Georgia.
