Abstract The Mike Markkula collection of early Apple Computer material consists of material produced or collected by Markkula during his time at Apple Computer, Inc. in various capacities from CEO to chairman of the board. Ranging in date from 1977 to 1998, the collection includes Apple marketing, public relations, dealer and consultant materials, manuals, and software. There is also a small amount of software and manuals produced by companies other than Apple. Markkula attended Glendale Junior College for two years before transferring to the University of Southern California where he earned his bachelor’s (1964) and master’s degrees (1966) in electrical engineering. While an undergraduate student Markkula began working at Hughes Aircraft Company in the Research and Development Laboratory. He continued with Hughes until graduation, when he accepted a position with Fairchild Semiconductor as a product marketing manager. After approximately four years Markkula left Fairchild to join Intel as a marketing director. In 1974 at the age of 32 Markkula retired on the basis of stock options. Computer History Museum 2 Mike Markkula collection of early Apple Computer material X4554.2008 In 1977 Markkula was introduced to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak through Don Valentine. Markkula was so impressed by the computer that Steve Wozniak had designed and built that he offered to help write a business plan. Shortly thereafter Markkula invested in Apple and began working for the company, bringing business experience and connections in the venture capital industry to the company. As the third employee, he not only helped to manage the company, but he also mentored the young founders during Apple’s early period of extreme growth. In addition, Markkula wrote some of the early software programs for the Apple II under the pseudonym Johnny Appleseed. Markkula was Apple’s second CEO from 1981 to 1983, and served as chairman from 1985 to 1997, when he again retired. In 1986 Markkula provided the initial funding for what is now known as the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. Since his retirement from Apple Markkula has continued to act as an angel investor in a range of companies, including Echelon Corporation. Scope and Content of the Collection The Mike Markkula collection of early Apple Computer material consists of Apple and non-Apple materials from 1977 through 1998, including a copy of the Apple marketing philosophy Markkula authored, marketing materials from the early years of the company such as annual report and stock options, and public relations materials including articles published between 1979 and 1983 featuring profiles or information on Markkula, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, John Scully, Apple Inc. and their products. There are also newsletters and other documents related to the Apple II and IIe which were produced for users, dealers, and Apple consultants. The majority of the collection is made up of manuals for the use of the Apple II, Apple IIe, Apple III and related or compatible software and hardware. There is also a collection of manuals for software programs published by Apple, Claris, and non-Apple companies. Software makes up approximately one third of the collection. Collection Contents Series 1, Internal materials, 1977-1984 This series consists of material created by Apple staff for internal use or which was otherwise circulated among early employees of the company. Included is a document entitled, “The Apple Marketing Strategy” written by Markkula in 1979, a Wozniak-penned technical paper entitled, “High-Resolution Color Graphics on the Apple-II Computer” from 1977, and a small collection of The Apple Times newsletter. The majority of the series is comprised of marketing materials, including annual reports and stock option information, material related to the Apple Racing car sponsorship, materials given out to Apple consultants, and brochures related to the Lisa Computer, Apple IIe and other products. The remainder of the series comes from the public relations division, and consists of documents related to the Apple Educational Foundation and a collection of published articles on Apple products and personnel including Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, John Scully, and Markkula. There is also a collection of periodicals containing similar articles about Apple from 1979 to 1983. This series is arranged alphabetically. Series 2, User groups, 1977-1983 This series consists of material created for early users of Apple computers, including programming instructions, lists of commands, and instructions related to Applegraph, Applesoft, and the Pascal programming language. There is also an incomplete run of Contact, the first Apple user newsletter, published between 1978 and 1979. This series is arranged alphabetically. Series 3, Dealer records, 1978-1982 This series consists of materials produced between 1978 and 1982 for retailers and dealers of Apple hardware and software, such as product features and specifications, resource center bulletins, price lists, software catalogs, and copies of Applesource and Winning newsletters published between 1978 and 1981. This series is arranged alphabetically. Series 4, Manuals, 1978-1994, bulk 1978-1984 This series consists of manuals and published instructions for the Apple II and associated systems and software (Family System, Tax Planner, Super Serial Card, Apple Language System, Apple Plot, Elementary, My Dear Apple, Apple Logo, Backup II, Imagewriter), the Apple IIe and associated systems and software (80-column text card, Applesoft BASIC, ProDOS) and the Apple III (Apple Business Basic). There is also an assortment of other Apple hardware manuals 1978 to 1985 and Apple software manuals published between 1978 and 1994. This series also contains a collection of software manuals published by the Apple subsidiary Claris between 1991 and 1994. Finally, there is a collection of manuals for non-Apple software published between 1978 and 1983. This series is arranged alphabetically. Computer History Museum 4 Mike Markkula collection of early Apple Computer material X4554.2008 Series 5, Software, 1978-1998, bulk 1979-1985 This series consists of packaged Apple software: Apple Pilot (1979), Graphics Tablet (1979), The Shell Games (1979), Elementary, My Dear Apple (1980), Personal Financial Manager (1980), Tools (ca. 1980), Apple Level 1 Technical Procedures (1982), SuperPILOT (1983), DOS programmer’s tool kit (1983), ProDOS technical reference manual (1983), MacTerminal (1988), and MPW Pro (1994). There are also two Claris software packages (ClarisDraw and MacWrite Pro) published in 1994, in addition to a collection of non-Apple packaged software published between 1980 and 1982.
