  • Stanley Kubrick's 18Th Century
Stanley Kubrick’s 18th Century: Painting in Motion and Barry Lyndon as an Enlightenment Gallery Alysse Peery Abstract The only period piece by famed Stanley Kubrick, Barry Lyndon, was a 1975 box office flop, as well as the director’s magnum opus. Perhaps one of the most sumptuous and exquisite examples of cinematography to date, this picaresque film effectively recreates the Age of the Enlightenment not merely through facts or events, but in visual aesthetics. Like exploring the past in a museum exhibit, the film has a painterly quality harkening back to the old masters. The major artistic movements that reigned throughout the setting of the story dominate the manner in which Barry Lyndon tells its tale with Kubrick’s legendary eye for detail. Through visual understanding, the once obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray becomes a captivating window into the past in a manner similar to the paintings it emulates. In 1975, the famed and monumental director Stanley Kubrick released his one and only box-office flop. A film described as a “coffee table film”, it was his only period piece, based on an obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray (Patterson). Ironically, his most forgotten work is now considered his magnum opus by critics, and a complete masterwork of cinematography (BFI, “Art”). A remarkable example of the historical costume drama, it enchants the viewer in a meticulously crafted vision of the Georgian Era. Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon encapsulates the painting, aesthetics, and overall feel of the 18th century in such a manner to transform the film into a sort of gallery of period art and society.

  • You Mentioned That Some Scenes from James Ellroy's LA CONFIDENTIAL
89 FAQ 6 6.1 Q: You mentioned that some scenes from James Ellroy’s L.A. CONFIDENTIAL were filmed inside the Hodel/Franklin House. I didn’t see any. Which ones? Yes, two separate scenes were filmed inside the Franklin House, but if you blink you miss them. George Hodel 1949 David Strathairn as “Pierce Patchett” 90 L.A. CONFIDENTIAL FRANKLIN HOUSE SCENE 1 Scene between Kevin Spacey and James Cromwell (Capt. Dudley Smith) This 1996-7 scene filmed in Hodel-Franklin House kitchen five years before residential interior renovation in 2002 L.A. CONFIDENTIAL FRANKLIN HOUSE SCENE 2 Scene at Franklin House with partygoers (Hookers and tricks) This scene filmed in Hodel-Franklin House living-room in 1996-7 91 Kevin Spacey as detective Sgt. Jack Vincennes holding Pierce Patchett’s Fleur dy Lis business card George Hodel’s “Whatever You Desire” Fleur dy Lis photo album As in CHINATOWN, there are some fascinating coincidences related to the real life George Hodel and the characters in the fictional Ellroy novel, masterfully adapted to film in 1997 by director, Curtis Hanson. First is the character, Pierce Patchett, who not only resembles George Hodel in physical appearance and voice, but is presented in the film as a powerful L.A. behind-the-scenes shadow figure, running a vice operation and working with corrupt cops. Pimp Patchett has high class prostitutes going to cocktail parties and entertaining wealthy and connected businessmen AT THE FRANKLIN HOUSE. (See above clips) Incredibly, this is something that Dr. George Hodel did in real life, at the same location, in the very same room! Patchett’s logo is the Fluer dy Lis, which we see on George Hodel’s private, personal album of loved ones.

  • 101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers.

When the body of a young woman is discovered by the Thames, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder, from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed The Black Dahlia. The three part drama, Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia, is adapted by Lynda La Plante from her successful second novel about rookie detective, Anna Travis. It is produced by La Plante Productions for ITV1. Kelly Reilly (He Kills Coppers, Joe’s Palace, Eden Lake, Mrs Henderson Presents) returns to the role of Anna Travis. Acclaimed actor Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood, Margot at the Wedding, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Prime Suspect) stars as her boss, the volatile Detective Chief Inspector James Langton. They are joined by Shaun Dingwall as Detective Inspector Mike Lewis, Celyn Jones (First, Joe’s Palace, Grange Hill) as Detective Sergeant Paul Barolli, Michelle Holmes (Red Riding: 1980, The Chase, Merseybeat) as Detective Constable Barbara Maddox and Amanda Lawrence (Little Dorrit, Clone) as Detective Constable Joan Faukland. Guest stars in the new series include Simon Williams (Spooks, Sense and Sensibility), Sylvia Syms (Collision, The Queen), Holliday Grainger (Merlin, Demons), Edward Bennett (After You’re Gone, Silent Witness) and Hannah Murray (In Bruges, Skins) Director of Drama Laura Mackie says: “Above Suspicion was one of the highlights of the Winter Season on ITV1 and I’m delighted that Lynda is bringing Anna Travis back for another gripping investigation”.

Patterson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In the late 1980s, historian Hayden White suggested the possibility of forms of historical thought unique to filmed history. White proposed the study of “historiophoty,” an imagistic alternative to written history. Subsequently, much scholarly attention has been paid to the category of History Film. Yet popular concerns for historical re‐presentation and heritage have not fully addressed aesthetic effects of prior history films and emergent imagistic‐historiographic practices. This dissertation identifies and elaborates one such alternative historiographic practice on film, via inter‐medial study attending to British and American history films, an instance of multi‐platform digital historiography, and an animated film – a category of film often overlooked in history film studies.

One of the ways in which Baker creates this contrast is through the repetition of sounds from François Truffaut’s 1962 French film Jules and Jim in The Flick. This repetition causes us to ask ourselves as audience members – why is this particular movie referred to so many times over the course of the play? One clue to this can be found by examining the similarities and differences between the two works. Both stories depict characters searching for happiness. Both follow two men and a woman as their lives intertwine. Both depict versions of love and betrayal. Still, there are differences. Truffaut’s lead characters, all white, magically seem to have enough money to support their lives in country cabins and Parisian apartments as writers. They both have a passionate sexual relationship with the same woman, and both relationships fail spectacularly in different ways.
