1 ABOVE SUSPICION: THE RED DAHLIA Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia DC Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly) is back, reunited with the inimitable DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), to face her most challenging and terrifying case yet. When the body of a young woman is discovered by the Thames, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder, from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed The Black Dahlia. The three part drama, Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia, is adapted by Lynda La Plante from her successful second novel about rookie detective, Anna Travis. It is produced by La Plante Productions for ITV1. Kelly Reilly (He Kills Coppers, Joe’s Palace, Eden Lake, Mrs Henderson Presents) returns to the role of Anna Travis. Acclaimed actor Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood, Margot at the Wedding, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Prime Suspect) stars as her boss, the volatile Detective Chief Inspector James Langton. W. Glenn Martin, an undercover informant for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) during the late 1940s, made his chilling confession in a handwritten three-page letter dated October 25, 1949. Martin penned the detailed missive to protect his teenage daughters, whom he feared could be harmed for his harboring of dark secrets. The letter and an analysis of the details contained within are published in the latest book, out this week, by former LAPD homicide detective Steve Hodel about the Black Dahlia murder – Black Dahlia Avenger III. Elizabeth Short, sensationalized as the Black Dahlia in the tabloid press, was a 22-year-old small-town girl with stunning looks from Medford, Mass. Short was kidnapped, sadistically tortured and her body surgically bisected in a procedure known as a “hemicorpectomy,” which was first taught in U.S. medical schools in the 1930s. Short’s body was mutilated with such precision that investigators at the time determined the act “could only have been performed by a skilled surgeon.” That surgeon, according to Steve Hodel, was Dr. George Hodel, Steve Hodel’s father. -

It’s the kind of visage that looks ripe for Instagram; green and geometric, it can be perfectly framed in a square, the faux-aged concrete blocks surrounding a large, lonely window that reflects Los Angeles’s cloudless blue skies – and hides a far more grisly history. People gather there today in the same capacity that they have always: to drink and party, to see and be seen. All, of course, behind those windowless concrete walls that shield the glistening rectangular pool beyond. The house was built in 1926 by Lloyd Wright, a cast- off job from his father, Frank Lloyd Wright, for artist John Sowden and his wife Ruth to throw parties and put on am-dram performances during their retirement. Wright built in secret rooms and stages and blocked out natural light. He created a Mayan-Revival complex made for soirees to last until dawn. It’s still a stage set now: I Am The Night, Patty Jenkins’ television series about one of LA’s most mysterious and tangled families – that of suspected Black Dahlia murderer George Hodel – was filmed in the property. And that’s because, after the Sowdens moved out, Hodel moved in. He was the man who transformed the John Sowden House into what some believe is the city’s most haunted home.
