Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: the Image of the Journalist As a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’S Sex and the City
Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak Abstract New York Star sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw lives the life of a celebrity in HBO’s Sex and the City. She mingles with the New York City elite at extravagant parties, dates the city’s most influential men and enjoys the adoration of fans. But Bradshaw echoes the image of many female journalists in popular culture when it comes to romance. Bradshaw is thirty-something, unmarried and unsure about having children. Despite having a successful career and loyal friends, she feels unfulfilled after each failed romantic relationship. I. Introduction “A wildly successful career and a relationship -- I was afraid…women only get one or the other.”1 That’s a fear Carrie Bradshaw just can’t shake. The sex columnist for the New York Star is unmarried, career-oriented and unsure if she will ever have a traditional family.2 Just like other modern sob sisters, she is romantically unfulfilled and has sacrificed aspects of her personal life for professional success.3 Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker in HBO’s hit television show Sex and the City, portrays a stereotypical image of female journalists found in television and film.4 She and other female journalists in the series struggle to balance a successful Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak 2 career and satisfying romantic life. -

In a 2011 interview, King noted that he knew from an early age that he was "going to go into show business." Toward that goal, after graduating from a Scranton public high school, he applied to New York City's Juilliard School, one of the premier performing arts conservatories in the country. Unfortunately, his family could not afford Juilliard's high tuition, and King instead attended the more affordable Mercyhurst University, a Catholic liberal arts college in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mercyhurst had a small theater program at the time, which King later learned to appreciate, explaining that he received invaluable personal attention from the faculty and was allowed to explore and grow his talent at his own pace. However, he left college after three years without graduating, driven, he said, by a desire to move to New York and "make it as an actor." In New York, King worked multiple jobs, such as waiting on tables and unloading buses at night, while studying acting during the day at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. -

The success of the series that led to her award is a direct correlation to the large crowds that the film attracted when it made its debut in 2008. What is astounding, is that in 2007 only five of the fifty top grossing movies in American had a woman as a lead character , so not surprisingly critics throughout the nation were stunned at the great success the film Sex and the City had on its opening weekend. While critics were astounded, loyal fans predicted the success. The popularity of the film may perhaps be indicative of the times . This film came three years after the season finale of the HBO series also titled, Sex and the City . The series began at the peak of an ambitious female generation, empowered by third wave, and post-modern feminist movements. It may be that the emergence of a series that features the lives of four New York City women whose motto is to “do it like a man,” is the reason for the incredible following the series has had since its public debut. -

You Mentioned That Some Scenes from James Ellroy's LA CONFIDENTIAL
89 FAQ 6 6.1 Q: You mentioned that some scenes from James Ellroy’s L.A. CONFIDENTIAL were filmed inside the Hodel/Franklin House. I didn’t see any. Which ones? Yes, two separate scenes were filmed inside the Franklin House, but if you blink you miss them. George Hodel 1949 David Strathairn as “Pierce Patchett” 90 L.A. CONFIDENTIAL FRANKLIN HOUSE SCENE 1 Scene between Kevin Spacey and James Cromwell (Capt. Dudley Smith) This 1996-7 scene filmed in Hodel-Franklin House kitchen five years before residential interior renovation in 2002 L.A. CONFIDENTIAL FRANKLIN HOUSE SCENE 2 Scene at Franklin House with partygoers (Hookers and tricks) This scene filmed in Hodel-Franklin House living-room in 1996-7 91 Kevin Spacey as detective Sgt. Jack Vincennes holding Pierce Patchett’s Fleur dy Lis business card George Hodel’s “Whatever You Desire” Fleur dy Lis photo album As in CHINATOWN, there are some fascinating coincidences related to the real life George Hodel and the characters in the fictional Ellroy novel, masterfully adapted to film in 1997 by director, Curtis Hanson. First is the character, Pierce Patchett, who not only resembles George Hodel in physical appearance and voice, but is presented in the film as a powerful L.A. behind-the-scenes shadow figure, running a vice operation and working with corrupt cops. Pimp Patchett has high class prostitutes going to cocktail parties and entertaining wealthy and connected businessmen AT THE FRANKLIN HOUSE. (See above clips) Incredibly, this is something that Dr. George Hodel did in real life, at the same location, in the very same room! Patchett’s logo is the Fluer dy Lis, which we see on George Hodel’s private, personal album of loved ones. -

Above Suspicion: the Red Dahlia
1 ABOVE SUSPICION: THE RED DAHLIA Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia DC Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly) is back, reunited with the inimitable DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), to face her most challenging and terrifying case yet. When the body of a young woman is discovered by the Thames, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder, from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed The Black Dahlia. The three part drama, Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia, is adapted by Lynda La Plante from her successful second novel about rookie detective, Anna Travis. It is produced by La Plante Productions for ITV1. Kelly Reilly (He Kills Coppers, Joe’s Palace, Eden Lake, Mrs Henderson Presents) returns to the role of Anna Travis. Acclaimed actor Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood, Margot at the Wedding, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Prime Suspect) stars as her boss, the volatile Detective Chief Inspector James Langton. They are joined by Shaun Dingwall as Detective Inspector Mike Lewis, Celyn Jones (First, Joe’s Palace, Grange Hill) as Detective Sergeant Paul Barolli, Michelle Holmes (Red Riding: 1980, The Chase, Merseybeat) as Detective Constable Barbara Maddox and Amanda Lawrence (Little Dorrit, Clone) as Detective Constable Joan Faukland. Guest stars in the new series include Simon Williams (Spooks, Sense and Sensibility), Sylvia Syms (Collision, The Queen), Holliday Grainger (Merlin, Demons), Edward Bennett (After You’re Gone, Silent Witness) and Hannah Murray (In Bruges, Skins) Director of Drama Laura Mackie says: “Above Suspicion was one of the highlights of the Winter Season on ITV1 and I’m delighted that Lynda is bringing Anna Travis back for another gripping investigation”. -
A Critical Analysis of the Black President in Film and Television
“WELL, IT IS BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT IN FILM AND TELEVISION Phillip Lamarr Cunningham A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2011 Committee: Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Advisor Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Butterworth Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Maisha Wester © 2011 Phillip Lamarr Cunningham All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Ph.D., Advisor With the election of the United States’ first black president Barack Obama, scholars have begun to examine the myriad of ways Obama has been represented in popular culture. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.
